Dr. Wellens performed a Tendoscopy on my left Achilles and perennial tendons, only to have to have another open surgery 12 months later because the surgery did not solve the issues. I still have pain following that surgery almost 1 1/2 years later. Do not get Amniox injections unless you have a few grand to throw away. They were not honest about what insurance would cover as I learned after. Their billing office is not great also. The last draw was when she said multiple times that I had a tear on my right Achilles following my MRI. I decided to go to another surgeon at LRMC for a second opinion. THERE WAS NO TEAR. I will not be going back. Unfortunately I should have done this a decade ago when I started going to them.

I provided them with my private insurance and they stated that the medications, treatments and ultrasound were not covered. Eventhough, they are in network and I have great insurance coverage. Needless to say, I paid upfront and their office billed my insurance for the ultrasound. I am now submitting all my receipts for reimbursement and questioning the treatment plan while looking for a new podiatrist. They are a money making business. BEWARE!

I scheduled a visit with Dr. Wellens on a recommendation from a friend. I had been experiencing…read moreworsening pain in the first joint of my big toe for about two years, and it had become so stiff that I couldn't bend it. This problem had started to take a toll on my active lifestyle: I had begun to dread long runs, I couldn't surf the same, and my pickleball game had gone downhill. Mentally, I was trying to accept this condition as part of growing older. Right off the bat, Dr. Wellens made me feel very comfortable and confident in her expertise. She examined my toe with X-Ray images and an ultrasound machine, discovering lots of bone spurs in the joint. She called my condition "turf toe," and told me I had a few different options for treatment. The one she recommended was shock wave therapy on the affected joint, along with an amniotic stem cell injection directly into the joint. The main drawback to this treatment was that it would cost $4,000, and my insurance would not cover it. After some deliberation, I decided to go ahead with the expensive treatment. Let me tell you: BEST DECISION EVER. I came back the following week for the first of three shock wave therapy sessions, and the stem cell injection. Dr. Wellens gave me a lidocaine shot in the affected joint, and the nurse administered shock wave therapy, which took about 5 minutes. She told me the shock wave therapy on my toe would cause major inflammation, and that my body would then send its resources to heal the area. She said it would also break up some of the bone spurs, and my toe would continue to heal for about 6 weeks. Immediately after the stem cell injection and first shock wave session, I could bend my big toe again. It was unbelievable. The doctor told me to take it easy at first, but I felt like running and jumping for joy. My toe was fixed! I couldn't believe it. I went back to the office for my remaining two shock wave therapy sessions, and my toe continued to gain mobility each time. After another ultrasound examination, Dr. Wellens concluded that 80% of my bone spurs are gone. I have absolutely no pain in my toe joint now, and I can bend it as much as I can bend the other one. I can even stand on my tippy toes.... Something I never would have dreamed possible. I am so grateful for the treatment I received from Dr. Wellens and her staff.... It was without a doubt WORTH EVERY PENNY!

She just looked at my toe, and did not touch it or ask that I remove the nail polish to make a determination. SMH!!. At the end of the visit with the dr, an assistant appeared trying to sell me a toe fungus cream that I could only get at the Dr's office; really! In addition, suggesting treatment at $200.00 (not covered by insurance) that would not cure the problem, but will "make it feel better." Very disappointed; not returning there!

He then sent me to a prosthetic place to have a boot made and had he examined me, he would have known my foot faces right, I can't wear a boot or a shoe. On subsequent visits they ALWAYS wanted to do an x-ray, which I refused, since he said there was nothing he could do. They did the impressions for insoles and showed me shoes that looked like 9.99 Walmart house shoes. On the last visit, she asked me why I was there (this after getting a phone call about an appointment) and I told her the call said orthotics were in. She came in with ONE, not both, and they made it incorrectly after me telling them each and every visit I have no arch anymore (I did not accept it and they still billed my insurance for it.) Also, he ordered a power chair and the company said he didn't sign it so they sent it back. Asked the girl in the office and she said yes they sent it back. Company said they never got it. Got an insurance statement today that said they did smoking counseling, no such thing. They have a scent dispersor in the waiting room that's horrible for people with allergies.

I then ask what will happen with my payment if they do take my insurance and she made a face and said "uhhh i dont knowww if we take your insurance" So no answer as to what will happen to my money IF they do take my insurance and i guess its standard practice to not care about looking into if insurance is accepted before the patient arrives. To be clear i would pay out of pocket with no problem if they had diligently looked into it and they didnt accept my insurance.

There were a couple benches and a few chairs. There's a huge octagonal bench thingy in the middle of the room. Almost looks like it use to be a fountain. I walked in at the same time as an older couple. The check in process was fast and easy and they took my copay immediately. I was moved into a patient room at about 12:25 and Dr. Karr came in to see me at 12:45 At some point I heard the doctor pass by my room and say something like, "these are my last 3 right?" I assumed he meant last 3 patients before he went to lunch. I thought I was next because at that point it was 12:30 and I had seen on the sign in sheet that someone who arrived before me had a 12:15 appointment. The point of that is.. I knew I wasn't supposed to be last. But out of the 3 patients, I was the last to be seen. It's not a big deal, just made me go a bit over on my lunch break. The doctor took X-rays and confirmed my suspicion of a stress fracture in my left foot. I thought he would give me a brace but instead he put my on an anti-inflammatory and steroids. I'm not a fan of taking pills so I'd actually prefer a brace (which is what my east coast podiatrist gave me when I lived there and had a stress fracture in my other foot). I've seen Doctor Karr in the past for issues in my right foot. He was quick to give me a cortisone shot. I didn't realize it was a Cortisone shot until later. At the time he just said he was giving me a shot. It worked, although I would have liked to know before what it was. Dr. Karr is an overall good doctor, but as someone with naturalist tendencies, I feel that he resorts to pharmaceuticals rather quickly, when other options may be available. Also, most of his clientele appear to be middle aged and older, so as a millennial he comes off as a little awkward.. Personal opinion. Lol.
