SAVED MY LIFE My…read moreestranged wife and her boyfriend had hired three high-powered lawyers, demanding a third of my income for ten years, renewable at their whims. I'm 57 - that would have destroyed my financial future. My previous lawyer had already charged me ten thousand dollars in monthly fees before we'd ever even spoken to a judge, and demanded another ten to finish the job, so I was forced to walk away, saying "enough is enough!" That left me desperate: I was facing three crack lawyers with no representation, a month before pre-trial. I asked everywhere for help, and finally a public defender told me "I know JUST the guy". The next day, a man with a tough, no-nonsense tone called me back. He asked me for details, listened carefully and said "I think I can help you," he said, "come out to my office and we'll talk". When Jason Sullivan came to the hall to meet me, he looked like a part-time boxer: tough, with a gleam of humor in his eye. His handshake was strong, his eye contact unwavering. From the outset he made it clear that he was not out to extract maximum payments from me, and that he really, really disliked cheats and swindlers. "So what are you hoping to get out of this?" he asked, listening patiently as I responded. "I just want her out of my life. Without having to pay her huge amounts of money". "That sounds reasonable", he said; "I think we can get that for you". And for the next three months, he went to bat for me. For the first time since the lawsuit had started, I had a champion in my corner, ready and able to fight for me. Jason was careful, methodical, painstaking. He picked up on subtle things my previous attorney hadn't even noticed: my ex had signed an affidavit claiming she didn't own a car, then cited the need for gas and oil for the car she didn't own. During the hearing, Jason was calm, measured, and polite, as my ex asserted lie after lie; pretending to need a restraining order when she had no cause, claiming to have been sleeping on friends' couches when she had been living with her boyfriend for years; claiming to barely speak English, when she had a masters degree in teaching the language. Jason had coached me on staying quiet while he handled the situation, so I held back, even when the urge to blurt out "She's lying!" was almost overwhelming. He was right. The judge dismissed the restraining order, and her lawyers backed down; the final settlement was about a twentieth what they'd been seeking, and Jason never charged me another dime beyond his retainer. When the dust settled, he invited me into his office, as happy as I was with the outcome. There was no doubt that he genuinely cared what happened to me, and his parting words were: "now that it's over, you have a great job and you've got a good life ahead of you." And that was how Jason Sullivan saved my life.

I got custody of my daughter back after a Judge in Pennsylvania gave custody of my daughter to her father, whose step-son was a child molester. My ex moved out of Pennsylvania, to Massachusetts, then to New Hampshire and then to Maine. I had to file for custody in every state, once he established residency in that state after 6 months. The custody battle lasted for five years while my ex was moving around to avoid it. It was in Maine that Mr. McCullough fought so hard for me to get my daughter back, knowing that I was the only person trying to protect my daughter from her step-brother and step-mother. He brought in a Guardian ad litem to independently represent my daughter, who did background checks and discovered very disturbing things. I am very grateful to him.

In the fifteen years (in my work) I heard a lot of negative comments about attorneys, but my confidence never wavered. In my defense Attorney Brown chose expert referrals, who had exceptional qualifications in their field and he kept them thoroughly informed with all the complicated details related to my case. Contracted Attorney Lown for a bankruptcy (due to an extended job loss). In our bankruptcy petition…read morewe stated that we wanted to reaffirm our mortgage debt. Apparently our mortgage servicer, Chase Bank, did not send the reaffirmation paperwork until AFTER our bankruptcy case was approved and closed. Lown never halted the proceedings, not did he inform us of this issue. Three years later, after paying our mortgage on time and in full every month, we learned (after contacting HUD to see if we qualified for a program for underwater mortgages) that we had never reaffirmed. Lown then told us "For another $700 I will file to reopen your bankruptcy and have the judgment vacated, then you can reaffirm. I can't guarantee, but I've done it before and it's not unheard of". Well, only after the judge refused to vacate the judgment and I contacted other attorneys, did I learn that perhaps a month or two after the initial ruling you will be successful in vacating the original judgment, but ABSOLUTELY NO WAY after three years! So, Lown charged us about $1800 for the original bankruptcy, which he mishandled, and another $700 that two other attorneys told me he should have never done. And Chase, on the other hand, continues to tell us "You only had a certain period of time to reaffirm...sorry, nothing we can do". Even though the screw up was theirs to begin with!!!! Guess what, folks? Now we are losing our home to foreclosure. Lown failed to use due diligence in our case, and, in my humble opinion, should be avoided at all costs! We even looked into suing him for legal malpractice but for some reason our case was not considered a certain bet. It's not like there are a number of legal malpractice attorneys in NH, either. I only found one, and he had an expert look into our case and declined to take it. Go figure. Lown gets to continue practicing law and taking people's money, and average, hard working people such as my husband and myself lose everything we've spent the last decade working for.

We'd had a trust in place when our children were younger but didn't feel one was necessary now that they are adults and our assets have clear beneficiaries and TODs. The first firm we consulted insisted that we needed a new trust, quoting roughly $3,000 in upfront meetings before any documents were even prepared, plus a $500 annual maintenance fee. When we met with Kathryn, the experience was entirely different. She provided clear, set fees from the start, listened carefully to our situation, and agreed that a trust wasn't needed at this stage. She also drafted our wills in a way that makes it easy to transition to a trust later if our financial situation changes. Kathryn was a pleasure to work with--professional, personable, and efficient. Her office had our completed documents ready within two weeks. We highly recommend her to anyone looking for straightforward, reasonably priced estate planning guidance.
