Maybe I missed something?…read moreWell, OK here goes - First of all, let's talk about the fact that this is one of those newfangled glasses, steel constructions. No, it's not the quaint old hundred year old, yellow building that everyone in Greenfield has loved for generations. You know what that means? It means it is energy efficient. It also means it's quiet. They also means it has great light. I can't really speak to the collection because I do most of my library borrowing online but what makes libraries really important these days is an entire room for children & an entire room for teens. And that means there a workplaces and tables and books for everybody else other places that are quiet and available. There is an entire hallway of nice spacious, clean all gender, bathrooms. Thank you. And a big parking lot. Not that e we are supposed to drive anymore, but you know a lot of us need to get here.

The library has a great community feel. It makes me wish I lived in South Deerfield! There is also a children's library downstairs, which is just as big as the main section upstairs. The bathroom is also down there, so I was able to check it out. The children's librarian is super friendly, and the space is very cozy and welcoming.

While historic, the building is cramped due to population growth over the past century, and the plexiglass barriers also make it feel closed in. There is ample free parking at the strip mall across the street. The buttons for the crosswalks are out of order, but cars stopped for me. You can also park in front of the building if you don't mind that it's on street.

I saw many books I read recently from new acquisitions in other towns as well as some classics like Maya Angelou's autobiographies. The librarians are friendly. I went to the wrong door but they let me in, they thanked me for coming by, and there is none of the stereotypical hushing some associate with the profession. In fact, there was a sign on the door advertising ukulele playing on the premises. They have free parking including electric vehicle charging stations and it's not far from Route 2. This is an excellent library for this size town - five stars all the way!

Hopefully there is handicapped access elsewhere but I didn't see it. The place smells and they were running fans, though that appeared to be more because they don't have A/C or it doesn't function than due to odors. The collection was small and pretty dated. I did get a prompt response to my emailed inquiry about parking, which is free, but the in person staff weren't welcoming and appeared to be glaring at me - couldn't tell behind the mask, but I certainly was not greeted. The building appears to have some historic value and with upgrades and additions could be much more than it is now.

When I nicely pointed out her rude response, she ignored me and asked to talk to my uncle and proceeded to ask him the same questions i answered already . He had asked me to call because he gets confused. It was just a really unprofessional conversation and she acted like she had no time of day to do her job. If you don't like people, than you're clearly in the wrong profession.

The collection is very small for a city this size. By comparison Lancaster, which is a town with a couple thousand fewer residents, has more books. Gardner has double the population but probably 6 to 8 times more new books. Masks are optional and are one reason I came, thinking this might be a freedom loving community I would like to move to someday, but it is apparent they don't fund the library the way they should. I could find a library with comparable holdings in a small town without the car thefts and other quality of life issues here. You choose a city because of its amenities and unfortunately Athol is lacking in this regard.
