I noticed a post on Nextdoor asking for handyman recommendations. There were a bunch of replies, but only 5 that seemed to match my criteria. I did research online for those 5. There was only 1 that had what I was looking for in a handyman company. Included in my list of requirements was BBB registration, insurance to protect customers and very positive reviews on all the main sites (Angi, Yelp, Google, etc.). It was also important that the 'company' be more than one person and have experience in the projects that I was interested in doing. Only one of those companies checked all the boxes: Welter Home Services. I called them and spoke with Kevin about our current and future needs. We had 3 projects. I wanted to do one to be sure I was pleased with their work (I was) before starting the other two. Kevin explained what labor and materials we needed to complete the job. He provided a detailed estimate with all materials and labor stated. Our first project was the replacement of a kitchen pantry door - including the whole door frame, hardware and trim. This required removing the old door, frame and trim - and painting the new door, frame and trim. On the agreed upon date, a Welter HS employee showed up at our door exactly on time. He was very pleasant and helpful. He completed the project, checked his work and made some touchups where the appearance as not "perfect", then did a great job of cleaning up the area he had worked in. We are very pleased with Welter HS and the work they completed for us: on time and for the price they quoted. We are moving forward with the next two projects and are looking forward to getting them completed with the same quality and professionalism that they applied to this first project. read more

We hired Welter a year ago to do a temporary fix on a pocket door that was becoming difficult to operate. We knew it was temporary, but selected the least expensive option at that point. The work was excellent and included replacing trim around the outside of the door. Fast forward a year, and the door was difficult to use again. We called Welter and quickly set up an estimate date, and just as quickly, set up the fix date once we received the estimate. On the appointed date, the repairman arrived, and within four hours, he had peeled off paneling and trim, installed a new track for the door, replaced the paneling and cleaned up. Of course, it was more complicated than that. The handyman was personable and professional. When he showed me the finished work, I couldn't tell he had even pulled the trim and paneling off. He was extremely careful around our reclaimed barnwood ceiling. The only way we knew the handyman had been here was that the door works beautifully now. The work consisted of cleaning baseboard radiators, which hadn't been cleaned in years, and then doing the plastering and painting that was damaged by taking the radiators apart. Best All Around Fix-it Guy! I called Kevin because paint was falling off the ceiling in my bathroom....he knew exactly what I was talking about and said it was no problem to fix! He came out on a Monday and with all the tools and paint ready to get the job done! A few hours later my bathroom looked like brand new! Spoke with Kevin for 1/2 an hour to explain some projects I'm interested in getting quotes for. Caulking a small area in the bathroom, clean and/or paint a brick fireplace and my main issue finding the source of a leak. Based on reviews from others, I guess they may be good. But in my case it did not go well at all from the start, or I should say it did not even start. We have small but multiple lighting and rewiring projects to be done at my residence and asked them for an estimate. They responded my online inquiry promptly and asked more information including taking pictures, which was the first week of September. After a few days of no action, I asked for update on estimate, and the office manager responded and said to me it would take two-three weeks because they have to sort out their October scheduling at that point. I simply trusted her words and waited for two weeks, but no response. I again contacted them to see what's going on, and they said they were going to look at it. A week past after that and again no response. Finally I told them its has been almost a month since I asked for estimate, and now the owner replied that he would look at it. As of today, there has been no response since. They just lost a potential customer that was ready to hire, who was even considering them for future projects we have been planning. It is unfortunate because most of reviews here are good, which was the mainly reason I waited for such long period to just get an ESTIMATE. It would have been nice if they let us know our projects are too small for them and they would not take it, rather than leaving a potential customer high and dry. read more

I was very happy with the work done by Welter Home Services. Kevin was easy to reach and communicate with, especially given how busy they are. Kevin and Dan put in a garbage disposal (including all necessary wiring/switching) and new closet doors for us, and we will be using them to re-tile our bathroom floor as soon as we decide on tile. They also replaced a shut-off valve for the kitchen sink, and when our main supply valve to the house got stuck (common on older houses), Kevin quickly coordinated a licensed emergency plumber and the Village Public Works department, to get the water shut off at the street and the main supply valves replaced immediately. I wish I had found this company sooner. I bought a townhouse last year and have had a list of to-do's a mile long since moving in. I had no idea where to start. To be honest, I didn't even know handyman companies existed, I thought people just knew a guy. My desperation must have come across in our conversation because he was able to get me in his crowded schedule right away! His rates are extremely reasonable and the quality of service is worth every penny. Handyman Dan arrived at my house right when Kevin said he would. Dan is impressive. He's a very friendly guy with a huge amount of talent, I don't think there's any task he can't handle. And, best of all, he's a master at multitasking - the guy doesn't know the meaning of downtime, no dilly dallying with Dan! Some of the tasks Dan completed for me include: mounting and testing a dishwasher, fixing the rolling mechanism and rescreening a sliding patio door, removing an old garbage disposal and installing a new one, correcting a drywall patch that someone else had done poorly, figuring out how my fireplace works and testing it out, stainblocking water stains in my ceiling, mounting a cabinet in my garage, and looking into a problem with my refrigerator. There may have been more to the list, but that's all I've got off the top of my head. I seriously thought this would easily be a 6-8 hour day, I was doubtful when Kevin quoted me 3-4 hours. However, Dan had it done in 4 hours! I'm still in disbelief. So now my house is in the best shape it's ever been. Everything works, everything looks good. My only regret is not having found this company sooner so that I could enjoy my home in working order a little longer before I move.
