However, there was a significant staff turnover and I think that had a negative impact on the quality of care. My mom was a higher functioning memory care resident and really got lost in the shuffle because her needs were not as great as other residents. She spent most of her time in her room. When I suggested that they could perhaps do more engagement activities that would be suitable for people at her level, the senior management person I spoke with suggested that I consider hiring a caregiver so she could get more attention. I also agree that the food was pretty bad. I moved my mom to a much smaller place that is not as aesthetically pleasing, but where the staff has really gotten to know my mom. The food is better, the room is bigger, the price is cheaper, and most importantly, I don't worry about whether my mom is well cared for when I am out of town.

There is no handbook. It's little bits of knowledge you glean from friends, other people in a doctor's waiting room, caregivers, online searches, and AARP magazine. You piece together a plan: not knowing what all is available to you, what to avoid, what's a waste of time, what's going to be the best random choice you'll make, or what is going to happen next in terms of health decline or improvement. You make the best decisions you can, based on basically no knowledge/experience in a chaotic, complicated environment. Choosing Delmar for my mother was the best decision we made - luckily, fortunately, unknowingly. It comes down to, "What will her daily life be like? How will she be cared for, when I can't be there?" No online views of attractive facilities or happy residents can tell you that. It's a leap of faith, entrusting your parent to strangers. So I'm going to use this space to answer the kind of questions *we* had - in terms of what we found *at Delmar* , not the other nearby Smyrna/Atlanta places. For those, I can't help you - knowing teveryone gives the same standard info online, on the phone, in person. Every day I visit my mother, so I think I have a good handle on how they perform. **What care can she get?** This is a little complicated. Because I actually didn't know what kind of care she needed. Or how to determine that. I just knew that she could not live with us and he longer; her daily level of need was too great for me to manage. I was struggling to keep her showered, dressed, fed, taken to doctors, care with medicines & for wounds, much less entertained, loved, and cognizant of what's going on. A full-time job it had become. Even when I'd hire a "sitter" once in a while, I was using that free time to sleep or rest. Delmar helped me understand that they could do the care parts, so I could spend my time with her in other ways. She went into Assisted Living. (I had been so afraid she'd need Nursing Home care - which is a big jump from living on the same farm for 86 years, to basically a room. Though that's what she had, at our house for the past 6 months.) It was A LOT of "assisted" - and has grown to be a lot more, in the past 3 years. They did all the things I had been doing for her. She was still quite ambulatory, but had macular degeneration so her sight was about nil, and was very hard of hearing, so even with aids in, required yelling and patience. They offered MUCH assistance that we did not need. (But have since then needed): - Giving medicines - Getting her to the dining room for meals - Introduce her to other residents - Take her downstairs (for events, beauty shop, appointments) and take her back up - Do her personal laundry and also linens - Explain what is going on - Clean her apartment Eventually: - Give showers - Make her bed - Help her find clothes/dress - Remind her of dentures & hearing aids - Change diapers/help her remember - Walk her to bathroom in the middle of the night - Bring meals / snacks to her room And more. WITH A LOVING ATTITUDE, too. My mother is frustrating. But I've never seen a CNA or dining worker or maintenance person treat her with anything but kindness. Sure, there's the fact that I'm THERE and it could be otherwise when I'm not. But TRUST my mother would tell me! **How can I know things?" Delmar has been INCREDIBLY helpful in sharing what is available, outside of their own care - both free services and paid. They turned me on to how to get VA benefits, which halved her rent for us. Plus Medicare-covered podiatry services and flu shots. (Eventually, Covid.) And HOME HEALTH services to augment what Delmar does. Like, bringing in physical therapy, counseling talk-therapy, nursing visits. **Can we afford it?** It seemed SO expensive to us. But the other, less-great places around Atlanta were expensive, too. When a person is hoyered out of the chair and back to bed and urine rains down out of the hoisting pad - you know your loved one hasn't been changed or properly tended too. Ms. Larrier was very professional and her empathy towards her patients health issues was amazing. Yes!! I'm a 40+ woman who's body is in worst shape than some of these vibrant, full of life seniors I had to hop pass trying to find my way to the pool area. Yes! I said hop.... Geesh! go figure. Heck they where looking at me as though they wanted to ask if they could help me. Unfortunately today was just a medical visit. While hopping around (LOL!) I did noticed how elegant and huge the Sterlings Estate is. It has a very welcoming entrance with whom I believe maybe a concierge to help you with what your looking for or answer any questions you may have. Today was a nice gentleman standing in waiting. Again looking at me like..... he was waiting for me ask to be pointed in the direction of my grandmother or something. NOPE!!!! He was polite with telling me the way to my destination. The Sterlings has a grand dining area with plenty of seating. I noticed also they have what looked like a coffee area, wellness center and plenty more activities for the seniors in your life to enjoy. I'm here today to get the full benefits of their heated salt water pool. The Sterlings offer Aqua therapy for people who don't live on campus. My health insurance had them on the list of places to choose from. I chose The Sterling Estates, because I have driven pass about 4 times and thought to myself.... Those look like a nice community for my mom or great aunt to live. Not knowing I will be the one visiting before them. But a least I had the pleasure of seeing what little of the community I could see. And I can say it was a memorable one.

They absolutely need better top staff members. Never try to reach the "nurse". She is unavailable by phone. They seemed to be really on top of things prior to our actual move in. Not the case at this point. The actual facility certainly needs a face lift. There are no automatic doors to the interior garden and patio area. Thus, if you are in a wheelchair you are not going out without help. If you decide to dine in your room, your meal is brought to you in a styrofoam box at the end of the meal service in the dining room. So you are going to get your meal an hour later. Oh great, almost in time for you to go for the next meal. I will not go on. Most of the residents are happy there. But, let's be real. Change is hard enough who is going to move again?

My experience with this facility and with this organization was outstanding...far better than I expected from any progressive living situation for my mom. I found the physical environment, the administration, and (most importantly!) the staff to be of the highest caliber. Staff clearly were treated very well by the management group, as there was very little staff turnover during my mom's tenure there. Candidly, my mom had the assets to allow her to live anywhere, but I never found another facility in the greater Atlanta area that so thoroughly and consistently delivered what their residents needed, even during Covid. PLEASE read the many five-star reviews included in "other reviews that are not recommended" below. Why are these excluded from the overall rating?

Everything is done with whatever strength you have . You also have to work in the dining room, pull, wash, dry,fold and out back laundry, buss tables, laundry everyday except weekends, give showers everyday, and sometimes the next shift would be late with no notice and you have to keep smiling through it all. The attitudes of some people here are ridiculous. Residents are sweet but the managemt overrules the good things. You also make $10 an hour and even after you take the CMA class for what they tell you is free, you have to pay $300 if you leave before a year is up. You do way too much for the pay, 5 different job titles for one pay.
