A fascinating old statue I came across a few months ago it caught my eye because Wellington was dismounted and I thought that was quite unusual! It has been a 'Listed building' since October 1972 and is near the town centre so quite easy to find.
The sculptor was Robert Forrest (1790-1852) and this statue was erected by James Gowans in 1854. It was then moved to this site in 1905.
Robert Forrest was a stone mason and self-taught sculptor who worked in a quarry in Clydesdale. He was 'discovered' when carving figures of animals by Colonel Gordon in 1817. He was soon taking on many commissions and had a studio on the edge of a quarry near Lanark.
His many other great sculptures include a statue of Wallace which is also in Lanark; James V of Scotland in Edinburgh and John Knox in Glasgow. read more
