Also known as the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial.
What a beautiful memorial to the people of New Zealand. "The Will to Peace" is what the memorial represents. It was built to commemorate those who perished in World War I, and World War II. It was originally unveiled on Anzac Day (25 April) 1931. Two bronze lions and a series of bronze friezes were added later in commemoration of World War II. The memorial is quite grand and it amazes me how many people just simply walk by it without paying any attention to it or perhaps just using the steps to make a call, tie a shoe or have a bit to eat. I believe it stops you in your tracks to the point where you have to go see it, walk around it, take it in, reflect and enjoy it. It is my understanding that there is an "inside" to it, however, it is rarely open to the public. Doesn't matter, it is an amazing memorial.
Located directly across the street from the Parliament Buildings and at the intersection of Lambton Quay and Bowen Street. The Turnbull House is directly behind it as well.
If you are going to visit the Beehive/Parliament Buildings then take a few minutes to check out this memorial. Enjoy! read more
