Two lighthouses! The Pencarrow Head Lighthouse was the first permanent lighthouse built in New Zealand. It was first lit in 1859 and was used for navigation until it was decommissioned in 1935.
The Pencarrow Sector Light is the official name of the lower lighthouse. It was commissioned in 1906 because the upper lighthouse was routinely obscured by fog and cloud. This lighthouse is still actively used for navigation.
While it's absolutely possible to visit the lighthouses, it can only be done by biking or walking. It's about a four hour hike and it looks like a fun time. I did not have that much free time in Wellington or I might have rented an e-bike for the journey.
