They hire out furniture too - perfect if you've got a function coming up or even just want extra seating at home over busy periods like Christmas.

I got two sewing patterns for $2 apiece (and they weren't even that great), and other op shops are selling them for around 50 cents each. We also grabbed a couple of spanners for $2 each, and I got some zips and piping for another $2. There is a large section of stuff that isn't secondhand and is brand new, and is extremely expensive. I saw a set of double bed sheets with foxes on them for $214. I know foxes are "in" right now, but seriously. Obviously very much taking advantage of the whole "vintage vibe" that people are loving right now, and good on them I guess, but I was looking for genuinely old, unfashionable secondhand stuff, and of that there just wasn't that much, sadly.

The younger family members now run the shop (and used to be my mum's neighbours) and happily the pricing is more realistic. There's still the appointment-only furniture shop next door which always has some lovely pieces but for scavenger shoppers like me, the treasures are in the overflowing main shop. There's a lot of china, silverware and glassware but you'll also find trunks, artworks, costume jewellery, buttons and random objects. What's really great about Antique Alley is that it's not an op-shop pretending junk is special stuff. It DOES have special stuff. To me it's an Auckland icon and embodiment of what a "proper" antiquities shop should be.

Usually the contents of an antique shops are strewn here there and everywhere sometimes even flooding the floors (borderline hoarding I say). But Antique aLley is organised with its items and because of this it feels like a little wonder space stepping back in time rather than feeling claustrophobic. I came here for work - we had to source some items for an event we were running and the lovely staff at the Antique Alley advised us of the renting option which was awesome. Paid hundreds of dollars for an overhaul of an antique watch, but the watch came back with an…read moreintermittent fault. The new winder he installed gets stuck in, so you can't change the time. The guy was told about it, he told us to pull it really hard. The fault kept happening, so we took it back. He's now had the watch for months, and today when I called him up, he denied any knowledge of the fault that he's already seen, and when I said that wasn't good enough, I got a lovely tirade of aggressive abuse. It's a shame when you have to tell a grown man to stop yelling at you. I expect this will end up in small claims, but unless you enjoy wasting money and being treated like dirt, I'd keep well away from this cowboy.

My absolute favourite products of theirs is their hanging light bulbs. They have the most amazing filament and look casually chic. You'll pretty much find them in all the top cafes and bars in town. They also have a coffee machine there and donuts from Little and Friday on the odd occasion. Such a good idea to eat and sip coffee while you shop! I was talking to the shop owner today and he said they are going to start specializing in jewellery alone, probably because they have a knack for finding exquisite pieces. My mum once bought a huge garnet ring from here with two diamonds either side and it was only $135! They have truly beautiful rings, some of which I imagine would be perfect for an engagement. Antique jewellery has more character and history, I don't know why anyone would prefer to have a modern piece that all look alike! The guy in here is so friendly and helpful, he will be able to tell you a little bit about everything in there I bet!
