Deep in the most eastern district of Vienna lies an old winehouse. This is a place patronized by locals and Stammgäste (regulars). It is well worth discovering - mainly because of the excellent food but the wine and atmosphere are also worthy. But let me describe the wonderful food here. I began a recent meal with a Krautsuppe. This was rich and flavorful and served piping hot. My main course of Kasnockerl served in a flat pie style was as tasty a cheese concoction as you will ever encounter. I'd like to meet a person who could tell me that he/she didn't find Weinhaus Hochmayer's Kasnockerl totally delicious. A class of Grüner Veltliner was the perfect liquid accompaniment to this enjoyable dinner.
Service wasn't overboard friendly but it was efficient and polite enough. For those who cannot tolerate smoking, do be aware Weinhaus Hochmayer is a smoking establishment. I didn't find it at all bothersome - but I'm also not usually bothered by smoke. And then of course there was the food and wine which proved to be so excellent. read more
