You can see the black scorch marks where the castle burned and Frankenstein fell five stories when the floors collapsed inside the main castle structure. Wild approach through a tiny tunnel. Easy to miss the access point. Looks like you can't get up there but you can! Long healthy hike up hill that will make you feel great when you reach the castle on top. Goats run out to greet you as you walk up the hill. Park at the front of the church. Then start walking. One of the most exciting experiences you will ever have!

It is a well-known and very popular landmark. The water tower was built in the 1800s in the square. The tower is approximately 60 meters high, and it was Mannheim's first water tower. Lots of shops (mostly touristy, but still), restaurants, cafes, and hotels to stroll around/through. For a look at a wonderful, touristy but beautiful, 1/2 timbered village, it's hard to beat Bernkastel.

While I happen to be…read morea protestant, I still love walking into Catholic churches in Europe and simply letting the beauty of the place just wash over me. Okay, this church actually isn't all that big, but they have managed to squeeze a whole lot of awesomeness into what is effectively quite a small place. The other great thing about this church is that it is generally open, and quiet as well, which means you can simply wander in there during the day and have a look around. For some reason it seems that they don't actually have a huge problem with thieves over on the continent, at least where churches are concerned. While it is small, it is beautiful, and incredibly peaceful.

It's accessible via the rhine river cruises that run up and down the river in this region of Germany, and is a bit of a hike up to the castle, but it's worth it! I will say, it isn't the most accessible if you have mobility needs, though, I do think an electric scooter or wheelchair (with assistance) could likely make it up. I'd call ahead if if you have accessibility questions. Once you make it to the top you purchase tickets in the giftshop and from there you can explore the entire castle. Let me say that again, they let you explore via self guided tour,the entire castle grounds. This is what makes it so special. You want to walk up to the top of the tower? go for it! You want to poke around each room - go for it? Take pictures? they don't care! It's really a treat to be able to immerse yourself in the history at your own pace and really take it all in. You could easily spend two hours here reading labels, climbing to the top of the tower, or simply sitting and enjoying the views from the many scenic panoramas available from the castle itself. Keep in mind, it has a small gift shop and no food options so if you think you'll need a snack I'd pack one, along with some water for your time here.
