What a great historical landmark! The directions to the castle led us the wrong way, but we ultimately figured it out. Once we got to the top, we walked around, took some photos and admired the view of the town from the top of the castle ruins. read more

Fantastic true Frankenstein Castle with the graveyard located at the base of the mountain on top of which the castle arises from a natural rocky outcropping. You can see the black scorch marks where the castle burned and Frankenstein fell five stories when the floors collapsed inside the main castle structure. Wild approach through a tiny tunnel. Easy to miss the access point. Looks like you can't get up there but you can! Long healthy hike up hill that will make you feel great when you reach the castle on top. Goats run out to greet you as you walk up the hill. Park at the front of the church. Then start walking. One of the most exciting experiences you will ever have! read more

The rain drove down through the trees and the silence in the forest was violated by claps of thunder. The weather on the day I visited this version of Frankenstein Castle probably did the most to push this review to five stars. Nestled in the Palatinate hills and overlooking the tiny town of Frankenstein (Pfalz), Burgruine (Castle Ruin) Frankenstein is an absolute delight. The ruins are accessible by a footpath that winds up a steep hill through the forest. A small plaque at the base of the hill (and not much else) explains the history of this secluded 12th century castle. Top Three Highlights: 1.) The path to the castle is only a short distance from the villiage train station 2.) Fantastic views of the surrounding forests and hills (and appropriately located cemetery at the base of the hill) 3.) No cost to visit the ruins read more

Walking is the only way up to the Castle Ruins. .. It is very steep.. proper footwear is recommended. .

This is an interesting old castle. It's not as impressive as other German castles (Heidelberg, for instance), but it is neat in its own way. Each year they have an enormous Halloween celebration, which I'm very sorry I never went to when I was there (especially since Halloween isn't actively celebrated in Germany). read more
