That said, with hundreds of restaurants in Vienna making the same traditional Austrian cuisine, Schutzhaus doesn't stand out. Everything I had there was tasty, seasoned and cooked properly but it needed that extra something to make this place really memorable. Here is what I had the opportunity to taste: - Filet steak with mashed potatoes, white asparagus and hollandaise sauce. Let's start with the sauce, because that really was a 5 star excellent hollandaise sauce. The steak (especially for a filet, which has the lowest fat content of all steaks) was overcooked, on an extremely small side and at times, I questioned if it was a filet at all (probably an end piece). The mashed potatoes were good. All things considered, a 3 star dish. - Ham, cream and wild garlic pasta squares (Schinkenfleckerl) - 4 stars. Very good, creamy, just what you'd expect this dish to taste. A good comfort food dish. - Asparagus soup - well done, 4 stars. A little on the runnier and less creamy side, which I thought was a good thing since it made the soup a perfect, light spring time dish. - Schnitzel (both pork and chicken) - nothing to write home about. There are so many places that do the traditional Wienerschnitzel better. - Asparagus risotto - 5 stars. The only truly memorable dish. Creamy, not too heavy and al dente. - Salads - overall 4 stars, well seasoned and properly dressed. If you live in Vienna (or are here for a long visit) you should give Schutzhaus a try, otherwise, there are a lot of restaurants with nice outdoor seating all over this town.

Because let's see, both husband and I love the whole flair, and will go there happily anytime someone mentions the word Schutzhaus. The casual approach of their quite pretty staff, who all look as a group of friends playing waiters and barkeepers as a side job because they had time that evening, is as refreshing as those lovely seasonal Prosecco creations involving fruits from own garden they always offer as aperitif. The white "Landhaus" furnishing with cute details, and the fire place - all incredibly cosy. Sitting outside in the summer in the thick shade of trees, wow, one of the nicest places to do so in Vienna. And then I came to a conclusion it is the menu. It changes seasonally which is great. However, there is always the same pattern. It is the menu that doesn't reflect the rest of the flair of this place, mainly determined by its lovely staff: young, international, relaxed, informal. It is a menu which you can find in a cook book you bought once because it was written by a well-known cook and it was on sale in Thalia, so it seemed very legitimate... but you will never ever try to make any of the recipes at home. It will collect dust because it will not inspire you. There is no fusion. It is just what it is, well-prepared, at times excellent, straightforward food made by a very good professional chef. And that is when I usually have troubles selecting a light, and above all exciting dinner. It is probably meant to suit the traditional taste of the surrounding neighbourhoods, and it is just me who is having false expectations based on the vibes of this place. So, I will keep going.. but i must keep the fifth star too.

It's in the attractive Pötzleinsdorf neighborhood of Vienna at the end of the Pötzleinsdorfer Schloss Park. This rustic culinary institution (founded in 1917) is fairly easy to find and well worth it. In winter it is a warm outpost when the world around it is clothed in white. In summer it can be a welcome stop on a hike in the Vienna Woods. And that is important to know. Though the food is quite good here and nicely highlights the cuisine of the Steirmark, it is also definitely not cheap to eat here. But you can also just enjoy some great Styrian wine in their outdoor garden before completing your hike and returning to the city. Anyway, if you're living in Vienna, learn where the Steirerstöckl is as there is not really another eating & drinking establishment that close to it. You never know when you might be in the Pötzleinsdorf neighborhood or surrounding Vienna Woods!

I also liked small potato chunks in the soup which added additional texture. Styrian beef carpaccio - also very good, properly dressed and well balanced. Sheep cheese carpaccio - thinly sliced home made sheep cheese with rucola and pesto. I combined it with the above beef carpaccio which made a killer pairing. Chicken skewer on a bed of salad. Woohoo! The best chicken skewer I ever had. Three different pieces of chicken on a skewer - plain, bacon wrapped and stuffed - cooked to a phenomenally juicy perfection. Pork schnitzel - breaded with an addition of pumpkin seeds and pan fried in butter to a golden perfection. Extremely tender and juicy and perfectly seasoned - possibly one of the best ones I ever had in Vienna. Ice cream dumpling - a sweet tradition that shouldn't be avoided. Hazelnut brandy - a must have. Like a liquid, alcohol rich nutella in a glass. Overall, a great performance by the Wirtshaus Steirerstöckl. The service was great and friendly and the only thing that I didn't like is that (like a lot of other restaurants in Vienna) Wirtshaus Steirerstöckl is cash only!

This is what is called, "Buschenschank" and the bundle of twigs over or on the door means that they are open to serve you wine, food, and laughter. We sat downstairs in a rustic and cozy room, with servers in traditional garb, and had a real chalet-meets-public house experience. The tables are long and the portions are large. Then menu contains several types of schnitzel, but my favorite is "Surschnitzel", which roughly translates to "old-schnitzel" and it has been brine-aged. I also enjoyed Cordon-Bleu vom Huhn (chicken cordon bleu). It was battered and fried to perfection! Add to that some of their amazing red wines (my favorites were Komoosition Fidelio Cuvée and Rebecca Cuvée) and you have an amazing, local experience.

Goodness gracious was this place great!…read more I had the pleasure of visiting this authentic Austrian Heuriger as part of a very large group - a physics conference was taking place in Vienna (where I happen to live, with a physicist), and thus we attended the dinner with the group. Our dining experience was undoubtedly different from that of most patrons, but I'm getting away from the point of this review.. At each table we had a bottle of sparkling water and a carafe of white wine, both of which seemed to be replaced pretty regularly as needed. The wine itself was pretty good, although I stuck mostly to spritzers to pace myself. We were also supplied with apple juice that I believe was made by the Heuriger, which was excellent - and this is coming from someone who normally does NOT like apple juice. Onto the food... I think because of our large group size, we had several long buffets of food with many offerings, which is a bit atypical of Heurigers (but none of us were complaining). Some of the foods offered were: cucumber salad; Austrian potato salad; very thinly-sliced and lightly-battered and fried: cheese, zucchini, and broccoli. And of course schnitzel, sausages and cheeses of different varieties, semmel rolls, spinach strudel, Käsespätzle, some other type of cheese + broccoli casserole, and other salads that escape me now. And there were definitely a few other fried foods. (I think "lightly-battered-and-fried" was the evening's culinary theme.) Desserts included moist (read: edible & un-Austrian/unauthentic) Sachertorte, apple strudel (without raisins!), Topfenstrudel (Topfen = similar to cream cheese), marble cake, and various other sweets that were spot-on. (I say "spot-on" because while Austria knows how to do pastries, it doesn't really know cakes (usually), unless you like really dry cake lacking in chocolate or flavor, in which case Austria totally succeeds at cake-making.) Suffice it to say that this place KNEW cake (at least on this night), and I liked pretty much every thing I ate and drank. Definitely visit Fuhrgassl-Huber if you get the chance, and sit outside. The view of the rolling hills and vineyard at sunset is breathtaking, and the vines and grapes growing along the trellises surrounding the outdoor seating are equally beautiful and charming.
