Because these abnormalities weren't indicators of blood Cancer for Dr. Tuan, he totally dismissed my symptoms and could not be bothered with me. When I saw him in his large plush office, which wasn't an exam room but more like an attorney's office, he was sitting at his desk looking at the computer screen with his back towards me the whole time. When I asked him about my Wt. Loss, he said it was b/c I had Gastritis, which my GI specialist didn't say that was the case! I told him so. As for the abnormally high CO2 levels in my blood, which my Pulmonary Dr. had even found to be concerning, Dr. Tuan told me to take it up with my Primary Dr., who was the one that Referred me to see a Hematologist in the first place! He so much Did Not Care about Me & my Health & Well-being that he practically shoo-ed me out of his office. A Warning to Patients referred to see Dr. Tuan: Unless you've been diagnosed with or have blood test results that are obvious indicators of Cancer, he will Not Care about the Abnormalities in your Blood nor the Symptoms you are suffering from. He is NOT the Dr. to see if you need to see a Hematologist outside of having Cancer. Instead of practicing as a 'Hematologist,' Dr. Tuan needs to make it clear that he is really an 'Oncologist.' He Should Not be calling himself a 'Hematologist,' because a REAL Hematologist looks into ALL Abnormalities of the Blood, NOT just those that are an indicator of Cancer.

His doctor inspected it, and then referred him to Dr. Tuan, whom he holds in high regard. A scan showed slow growth lymphoma, and we met with Dr. Tuan to hear him explain what it was, and what we should do about it. He did so in a calm, non-alarming way, which we all appreciated. My Dad, siblings and I were very impressed with his knowledge, bedside manner and explanation of various treatment recommendations. Before our meeting ended, he arranged for an appointment with a radiation doctor to answer any additional questions we might have, and to confirm his diagnosis. From the receptionist to Dr. Tuan and his assistants, our experience was very positive, and we're all breathing easier. It's the unknowns that make you nervous and even a bit frightened.

Then I thought, well, why wouldn't it be me? Enter Dr. Lee Char. Based in SF, I chose her to be my cancer surgeon not only based on her track record but the fact that she also collaborates with my plastic surgeon, Dr. Kind. Not only does she have a positive bedside manner, but she is a genuinely thoughtful and kind individual. I won't get into the gory details, the surgery was a success - as much as one could have. Clean margins, and no issues with the removal of the sentinel lymph node. Whether or not chemotherapy is warranted remains to be seen but so far so good. While I was recovering at CPMC (aka California Pacific Medical Center) she would drop by to see how I was doing and I knew that I was in good hands. Incidentally, she is the second breast cancer surgeon I had seen for my case and I am so glad I went with her.

PSA: Dr Malik's medical license was revoked, for many repeat poor biopsies, where from improper…read morebiopsies, she missed cancer. If you saw her in the past, get rechecked with a proper doctor. I was treated by her and she missed it for me as well. Similar to the other cases that resulted in her revocation of her medical license, she noted in the notes the wrong breast, the wrong location of the biopsy and didn't do a biopsy with ultrasound (which is standard procedure). She just felt around and extracted the biopsy. I am able to confirm the location as I have a small scar from where she took it, so I know with 100% certainty it wasn't my mistake. The same lump that I asked her to check, I asked another doctor to check 5+ years later, as a precaution. By that time, it had grown to 8 cm and was cancer.

But she went out of her way to call me on my cell phone that evening to follow up and see how I was doing. During a time which can be quite traumatic (breast cancer) she made it as easy as one can hope for. Sadly she isn't practicing here anymore and I can't locate her. I hope she is still practicing somewhere as it would be a travesty to lose one of the few good medical professionals out there. If anyone knows where she ended up please message me as I was trying to get in touch to get a recommendation from her for a local micro surgeon in Cleveland, OH and she did her residency here.

I was given no discharge instructions, no information about pain management, nor told to return for any sort of follow up. The majority of my questions to him and his staff (including a nurse named Karolina) via the patient portal, received NO response. This doctor may be accomplished in the medical side of things, but concern for the women he treats is of secondary importance. Go to a different GynOnc, should you need one.

Lewis Leng's scheduling practices are a joke. I mean how do you end up canceling an appointment…read morethree times in a row last minute?? Do you know how frustrating that is to re-arrange your schedule three times to try to make one appointment? He was supposed to see my mom for a tumor. (Thankfully, it was benign, which we already knew, but protocol is to have the diagnosis confirmed by a neurosurgeon.) But our appointments were triply postponed because of so-called emergency surgeries. When we finally were able to see him, I questioned him about his scheduling, and he simply stated that it was the nature of neurosurgery. If he doesn't operate on a patient right away, "that patient will die." (His very words.) He never followed that assertion with the only statement which could possibly justify this urgency: There is a shortage of neurosurgeons (either in the Bay Area or his medical group). I pressed him again, and he never said it. So I suspected it wasn't the case. One of my best friends is also a surgeon in the Bay Area, so I'm pretty familiar with the demands on a surgeon's schedule. True he isn't a neurosurgeon, but he obviously knows those who are and the field as a whole. When I told my friend what my mom had to endure and asked him if this were typical of neurosurgery, my friend immediately answered, "He shouldn't be scheduling patients to be seen in clinic by him and being on-call in the hospital at the same time." Exactly! Just have one of your fellow neurosurgeons cover the ER, while you take care of your appointments, like other surgeons do! My friend also brought up another valid possibility. He said that since my mom wouldn't require surgery and Leng's insurance reimbursement would be minimal compared to a surgery, it's not unreasonable to believe that he was uninterested in seeing her...and that Leng "probably has his practice workflow designed to max income" to quote my friend. I was appalled by this possibility. But it makes tragic sense that this is how some doctors operate (pun unintended). And it makes total sense to me that that's likely how Lewis Leng operates. Maybe if you are "fortunate" enough to require neurosurgery, Leng will see you at your appointed time. Otherwise you are probably "out of luck." I asked to meet the manager of the department to make a complaint. To my surprise, she not only listened to my complaint, but asked if I could put it in writing because she was tired of having to deal with all the patients who had the same complaint! (And I did exactly as she suggested.) So if you have a choice, I highly recommend you seek another neurosurgeon. Even if you do need surgery, you have to wonder whose best interest would Leng have in mind. Yours...or his?

This is a long overdue review for Dr. Lewis Leng, who performed my cerebellopontine angle…read moremeningioma surgery. When I first met Dr. Leng, I was overwhelmed and anxious after discovering a brain tumor in an incredibly delicate area. right beside the nerves for hearing, balance, and facial movement. From the beginning, he explained everything clearly, answered every question, and guided me through the options with patience and respect. When the tumor grew and surgery became necessary, I felt confident I was in the best hands. During the operation, Dr. Leng worked millimeter by millimeter near critical nerves, preserving my hearing, facial function, and long-term quality of life. His skill, judgment, and care made all the difference. Today I am healing, hearing more clearly, regaining sensation, and living fully, a result I credit to his expertise and thoughtful decision-making. Two minutes later, she called back and said do you want help or not? I told her once again that I do need help because this is an emergency but I did not appreciate her tone. She laughed at me and that is when I erupted. My mother is going through stage 3 pancreatic cancer treatment and I have a doctor who works within oncology laughing about the matter. What kind of cruel person does this?

At first Dr. Jeske seems compassionate and caring. She goes through all the motions. She'll hold…read moreyour hand or pat your knee. She'll give an exaggerated sad face when she gives you bad news. She'll walk you to the next room or to chemo. For some people, I am sure this feels really good. The problem is when something goes wrong or if you have different needs. From a medical standpoint, she delayed my surgery by months while I took AIs only. That delay increased my risk of recurrence. I am sure she could now backpedal and claim some BS reason for that, but there is no good excuse. Nor did we have a real discussion about it. I think she assumed I was afraid of surgery. I was not. I wanted to get this done and over asap. With her forced persona, she does not see the individual patient; she sees who she expects you to be. When what you say does not fit her limited view, she disregards it or she'll make fun of you for it. If you have major side effects from chemo, radiation, surgery or meds, her toolbox is almost empty. Again she falls back on her faux compassion, but she does not look for better medical options. If you end up hospitalized after each chemo, don't expect anything beyond her saying how she knows it is hard for you, a hand on your knee, and "don't worry; we'll get through this together." Better doctors evaluate the individual patient, take into account their medical issues, and form a plan. It may not resolve everything, but they try. She does not try. She is exceptionally lazy, taking the easiest treatment path for her without ever looking into options. I passed out in the office due to extremely low blood pressure from dehydration. The nurse congratulated me on my "little nap." When I told the doctor about this, I was called "dramatic" and "ridiculous". She laughed at me. If you have a cancer that responds well to standard treatment and you are able to handle those treatments well, you'll be fine. If you are someone who does not react well to fake sincerity or, if you have major issues and want real answers and options, she is not for you. I am in a support group. We had an assignment to draw our monster. The counselor expected us to draw a vision of our cancer. I realized I was drawing Dr. Jeske. I survived the cancer. She was the monster in my story because of all of the times I was mocked, belittled, and infantilized, the poor quality of care she actually provided, and her continuing to do things that I explicitly asked her to not do.

Warning: UCSF refuses to use next-generation gadolinium contrast agents when MRIs need to be done,…read moreand their staff are terrible about even communicating about it, so patients suffer higher complication risks from older inferior agents. If you want gadopiclenol or gadoquatrane, you'll have to go elsewhere, e.g. UC Davis. They're pretty good for lab work and infusions. My family member came here for same-day surgery and we experienced great care!…read more The WOWs: +Every member surgery team all came to meet us in pre-op, to take detailed history, ask/answer questions, confirm which body part they are working on, and addressed all concerns. Everyone showed great compassion and the team was very effective. +They were able to give fairly accurate timeframes for every step of the process. +I especially appreciated the constant text communications, so I knew how my family member was doing and when I need to come back to pick them up. +The surgeon and nurse both individually called me to debrief the surgery and review post-op care. The meds were sent to the correct pharmacy and we had no trouble picking up everything and going straight home. +I also called the on-call doctor in the middle of the night and they got back to me quickly to address concerns. +All the staff we encountered were professional and helpful. Improvements needed: -One thing that they could have communicated better was that only 1 caregiver was allowed to be in the pre-op with the patient. My sibling came and had to wait outside. -The hand IV access was a bit painful according to my family member, but he is a hardstick. Maybe they can add a "vein whisperer" phlembotomist for hardstick patients. -The coordinator was a little hard to reach at the beginning of this medical journey, but she advocated for us and was able to swoop us last minute appointments so treatment wasn't delayed. From first contact with UCSF to the surgery, with all the imaging in between, it took about 8 weeks. Surgery dates are scheduled based on urgency of the condition. For us, we felt the timeframe was reasonable. -The CT machine went down on Sunday, the night before the appointment. They left us a voicemail on Sunday night to reschedule, but there was no one to talk to until Monday. We showed up for the imaging appt anyhow (because the doctor needed to see the scans the same day) and they were able to pencil us in at an alternative location nearby. It was quite nerve-wrecking on Sunday night and I can see how that can be confusing for non-healthcare background patients to figure this all out. Overall: some hiccups at the beginning, but the rest of it was mostly smooth and the surgery team was excellent. Primary insurance: Medicare
