This tiny shop, located in The Wedge building, houses five ceramic artists. All wood-fire their beautiful yet each truly unique, wares in the 27 foot long wood burning kiln. Clayspace Co-Op started as a two man production, two local student artists needed a space to work and together complied resources to open up the gallery and work space in 2003. Since then, the shop has expanded to six local professional ceramic artists who work and show in the cooperative space. The co-working space is in the back of the gallery and didn't seem accessible to general public, but the ceramics themselves, which adorn every surface and self, are individually handcrafted which is seen through the colors and rough edges. So, if you're in the market for: bowls, mugs, vases, urns, pitchers, plates or any type of jar wit a lid, and you're willing to pay for handcrafted items, this shop is not to be missed.

They are located in an old house (I believe) that has been transformed into an art gallery/ framing studio/ Art bar/ Studio space. The upstairs level is the art gallery. It is absolutely gorgeous with each room with different colored painted walls to make the art on display really pop. They have dragon head sculptures, calligraphy art, burlesque photography, unique jewelry and so much more. My favorite part of this gallery is actually one of the walls-one of the owners has been (over time) gold leafing one of the walls and it is absolutely stunning. I am dreaming of doing this in my future home one day myself now. The bottom level of the space is where the magic happens. There is an "art bar" which is full of all the art supplies that you could imagine. You can take art workshops here with a group of friends, do an art project by yourself, or do a boxed art project with all of the instructions and materials provided. I recently did a group Mixed Media art workshop. A group of six of us did a three hour workshop led by Patrice. She is a great teacher, the class was super affordable, and it was super fun! For $35-$60 (depending on canvas size), we each created our own unique textured, colorful artwork. We were instructed on how to use the different materials (paint, stamps, modeling paste, mod podge, h20 colors, pitt pens, oil pastels, napkins, tissue paper, etc) and given inspiration. Within the three hour time period, each of us was able to start and complete a piece of art. I truly love this place and recommend it for anyone who loves looking at art (walk through the gallery), anyone who is intimidated by the idea of making art (take a no-pressure workshop with Patrice), or active artists (always good to try new things). We perused the aisles, carefully examining items both antique and handmade. We enjoyed many of the items, but found many of them to be on the pricey side. This is understandable as many are handmade so I didn't think much of it. That is until I stumbled upon this cow skull marked $16. I was so excited as that is a nice fair price and it's been on my thrift list for a while. I walked up to the counter and the employees were checking folks out but there were two, so I asked the one that was not visibly busy, "Excuse me! Do you mind if I just leave this here?" Knowing she was busy, I was just expecting a quick response. But as I stood there I thought I heard her say "yep" without even looking up. I had to ask to confirm I heard her right. I thought it was a bit odd but again I totally understood that she was busy so really thought nothing of it. We perused for a bit longer until the owners announced the store was closing shortly and to come up if you'd like to make any purchases. I did, explaining how excited I was and how happy I was with the price. The two women behind the counter immediately took notice and one of them said, "that must be a mistake." Again, I thought this was a bit odd, but not a big deal. I stood and waited while the owner called one seller, then another, then another. They assured me that the price "HAD to be a mistake," and I continued to wait, hearing her audibly huffing and sighing while others were also waiting to pay until eventually I just said, "I'll happily pay $20 for it!!" But was quickly refused. At this point, I really felt like the employees were not only being curt/direct, but directly disrespectful. I was appalled when after standing there for what had to be another 5 minutes or so, I finally said, in effect, "I don't understand why if the price is marked you wouldn't be able to honor it. It is the skull of an animal, a waste product, after all. There are many ranchers that regularly discard them..." to which one of the women behind the counter genuinely said "Let me ask you something. If you were me, and you were selling these items, would you not want me to do my due diligence and check?" I responded that in all honesty, if I was a business owner and made a pricing mistake... (which again, was never actually confirmed by the seller or even implied, it was a completely baseless accusation from the front desk employees) ... a mistake that was pointed out by a customer, I would almost certainly honor that price. She seemed disgusted. It felt like the employees were accusing me of trying to steal or switch the tag or something, which would've been literally impossible as the tag was marked "cow skull." Finally at this point I walked out. On the way out the door, I was talking to my folks about how shocked I felt by what had just happened (they saw the whole thing and felt the same way) and a very kind employee named Alex noticed what I was saying and that I was almost crying and held the door open for us before taking us aside and apologizing on behalf of the store and asking us several times to please come back and see them. I said we would not, but that I really appreciated his kindness. That gesture from Alex is the only redeeming factor from my visit to the store, and both myself and my parents were absolutely shocked and appalled. If they wanted to confirm prices or even refuse to sell for that price, that would be totally understandable. But the implication of wrongdoing I felt along with just general disdain made me genuinely feel as though I had done something wrong just for trying to purchase an item. I really am dumbfounded. Regardless, thank you once again to Alex for being the saving grace of this trip. I have anxiety and your kindness genuinely helped me to not cry as I was leaving and help enjoy the rest of my day. That being said, if you value kindness and human decency and you don't have a several hundred dollar budget, don't ever go here. Thank you for taking the time to read this review and please know I typed it myself with no AI. I am an artist myself and really feel passionately about being kind to others and treating them as you would like to be treated. The gallery also includes a beautiful sitting area with antique couches, the perfect spot if you're looking to sit and admire artwork. Personally, I think these studios far outshine the studios up the street next to White Duck Taco (at The Hatchery). And lunch at White Duck and visiting Riverside Studios makes a perfect combination. UNIQUE is the descriptor that I think best fits Daniel McClendon's art. He starts with a blank…read morewooden "canvas", covers it in black or white, then randomly adds strokes of the opposite color. To see this happen is an experience that is close to unbelievable. Daniel then studies the result and magically uncovers an animal in those random brush strokes... From that point his creativity transforms the canvas, bringing out that animal in the most unique, colorful and unexpected ways. We were instantly fascinated with his work when we passed by his studio, which is itself just an amazing, inviting, comfortable, place to spend some time. Daniel himself is likewise an amazing, inviting, comfortable person... If you are anywhere near Asheville, and have any inkling that you enjoy impressionistic art, colorful abstract art, or just art... Stop by and meet Daniel, he's just a great guy. Ask him about his kids and you will see he's a great dad too. We have a lake house and wanted something that fit into the design of the place, so we waited, watching his creations as he posted them on his web site. Our first painting is an Eagle that happened to show up in several of his videos. We called and said that we would love to have this painting. He delivered it halfway to the lake as he took his kids to a park in Greenville... It now hangs over our fireplace. Our second painting was a Pheasant. We enjoy hunting Pheasant and this painting just resonated with us like the Eagle did. The Peasant is in our bedroom now. Recently we saw a Seagull with a fish below it. When we look out any window in our house we are likely to see a seagull diving for a fish dinner... We found a spot for the Seagull in our dining room, immediately called Daniel to hod it for us. He called when it as dry and we recently drove up to bring it back to its new home. We are huge fans of Daniel, not just because of his UNIQUE art, but also because of his personality.
