    First Command Financial Planning

If you are needing financial planning assistance, or trying to understand what life insurance…read moreproducts you might need for you family, then Peter at First Command is the guy. Honest, straight forward and extremely knowledgeable is the best easy to describe him. While First Command is very veteran oriented, it also provides services to the civilian in need of advice. Highly recommend them.

I would highly advise staying away from First Command…read more After reviewing my statements, trade confirmations, and insurance documents in detail, I found that my accounts were set up in a way that consistently worked against me financially. My Roth IRA contributions were repeatedly invested into the same mutual fund with a front-end sales load of about 5.75%, along with a relatively high ongoing expense ratio. Every time I contributed, a portion of my money was taken before it even had a chance to grow. My accounts were also heavily concentrated in that one fund and subject to additional maintenance fees. I was also placed into a whole life insurance policy that cost me about $465 per month. After leaving and switching to term, I now pay around $80 per month for similar coverage. That difference alone made me step back and reevaluate everything. I found out First Command gets a big kickback from signing up their clients on policies such as this. Since many of First Command's members are prior military, they take advantage of this to build report and trust with you. Then manipulate you into thinking policies, such as whole life insurance, are the best path for you. I was told I was building wealth with these, but when I surrendered my polices, I got zero dollars back. There were periods where my wife and I were struggling financially, and at the same time money was being directed into this structure. Looking back, that money could have made a real difference for us. I asked questions about whether this was the best setup for me and relied on the guidance I was given. After moving my accounts elsewhere, I was able to set up something significantly simpler, lower cost, and more transparent almost immediately. After digging deeper, I learned First Command has a documented history of regulatory action and lawsuits involving misleading sales practices, high front-end loads, and military-targeted sales. That history lines up uncomfortably well with what I experienced. Beware and think twice before proceeding with First Command. To add context, I had Austin Hill as my first advisor then transitioned to George Calbert. Both of whom are supervised by Bryan Coleman. I would advise staying clear of these guys, as well.

He's agreeable to any changes I want to make and is able to make any changes very quickly. He calls on my birthday and calls when he feels we need to sell/trade/buy stocks. I get monthly statements so I always know how my funds are doing. I once asked to cash out part of my retirement due to a family emergency and he was able to have the money ready for me the same day. I took one star away only because I get SO much mail as I'm notified on any updates/changes on each stock which is mostly my fault because I haven't requested to change to email. I trust him with my future!

Of course - - they werent their fault. They were the mistake of the other company. When I called the original holder of my retirement account I was told the address was wrong on the paper work and my retirement funds were being mailed to the wrong address. I called Calvin and informed him I wasnt comfortable planning my retirement with a company that could make 3 pretty big mistakes in only 2 days. I was calling the original firm to stop payment on the check and go with a different company. He clearly didnt like that and got a little pushy for my taste. 2 days later he calls to tell me he has my retirement check in his hands and it would be easiest if I just let him deposit the funds and roll it over later. I told him NO - - I will either come get it or stop payment on it. My husband went to pick it up after work and guess what. He took it to the bank and deposited it and it will only cost "$x.xx" to roll it over with our new advisor. Its on - - - Better Business Bureau - - Yelp - - - Facebook. I beleive that Calvin Christensen is pushy and dishonest. I cant believe I made such a huge mistake.
