That being said, we paid nothing and hopped the boat to see Hamlet on the Rock, well, on Alcatraz to be more precise.

Socal definitely gets all the movement for these types of shows but I was so surprised coming here for the first time for John Summit for New Years Day. It was easy to navigate around the venue. Theres street parking and parking where i'm not sure you could park but parked there anyway and nothing happened. Getting inside was bottlenecked at the front and went fast, there are a bunch of smaller venue rooms with smaller artists that I wish I checked out more. It was refreshing walking around before the concert outside to the main hangar/main stage. They had food and porta potties right outside near the hangar which was convenient. Inside the main stage, its covered with a lot of drink tents. Very cool inside and not stuffy becauze it has an open concept. Music quality was okay, some of the artists before were way to quiet in my opinion. John Summit was amazing and the vibes were great. Excited to come back to this venue for more amazing artists.

For an event space, it's probably not the most ideal, but they made it work for a small, intimate crowd this past Saturday night. It's just really cozy, if you're comfortable with that. Plus it's confusing to find. The location seems really isolated, and you need to get buzzed in to what seems like an industrial building, then find the studio entrance down the hall on the 2nd floor. The lighting and decor inside are amazing, and looking upon the photos on the wall, and the props all around, I can tell they have the ability/potential to do really great photography and events here. They even have a vertical pole right at the front center of the stage, and plenty of equipment hung from the ceiling on stage to do aerial performances. The staff for the event we attended was friendly for sure, but seemed a little less professional, and things didn't seem as organized as I would expect. But it wasn't a problem for us, just an observation. It was almost like organized chaos. Exposed and jumbled cables and wires along the ceiling and walls, a sound system that's less than ideal, a substandard concessions bar for event guests, just a quirky vibe overall. But a successful show, enjoyable for guests... it's like things are meant to be imperfect and perhaps a little "messy". And since Little Boxes Theater hosts a number of workshops and productions in the creative arts, perhaps that's what makes it unique.

We have been holding flagging events at Little Boxes for over a year, and the owners Kitty and Aaron have been a pleasure to work with! We have had a number of odd requests, and they always listen carefully and do their best to cheerfully accommodate us (or explain why they can't - very rare!) They say on their website that they "...encourage inclusivity & nourish diversity of race, class, cultural heritage, artistic expression, ability, age, gender identity, sexual orientation and everyone exactly how they are and choose to be as they move through life." My experience is that this is not just words to them - they actually walk the walk. The staff provided clear and helpful instructions on site (ie. remove our shoes, drinks for purchase, where to find atm machine and restrooms). We were impressed by the small space. The place was dim and comfy with a bit of haze filling the air to set the mood, high quality speakers (L-Acoustics brand) set up inside giant perforated tubes (about 9 columns total), additional speakers at the corners and ceiling of the room. Seats with back support on the soft carpeted floor, though some guests chose to lie down during the session. It started about 5 minutes late, and lasted about 45-50 minutes long. Listening to the remarkable sounds of Pink Floyd in that time frame was relaxing and therapeutic. Just to be clear, the music is not blasting in your ear in terms of volume, it's basically surrounding you with sound so you can feel it, rather than just hear it, and it's done well. A lovely experience, especially if you choose an event playing the tunes of an artist you're a fan of.

Us neophytes were perplexed as to what exactly is going on here? Felt a bit like my visit to Rajneeshpurnam in Northern Oregon in 1984! The DJ person knows nothing about the record. It's a STUPID.COM stroke fest! They put on the featured record which was: "KIND OF BLUE" by Miles Davis. This is the biggest selling jazz record of all time, but I'm pretty sure the DJ person or presenter had NO idea. It also was one of the first records to have a predominant BASS LINE upfront ("BASS ON TOP") with the incomparable "MR. PC" (Paul Chambers). And, the "bass woofer" was turned OFF and I asked the lady after the gig and she said "Oh well, this isn't a very "Bassy" album so they probably turned it off. Pretty damn ironic. Immersive? I would've experienced more "immersive" on my car stereo sitting in the parking lot across the street listening to the Backstreet Boys! I was more impressed in my buddies family room in 1972 on his parent's $399.00 fake woodgrain 6 foot console stereo system with an eight track player and a turntable with sound organs built-in that flashed colored lights to the beat of the music.
