The folks at Swimming Flowers took the time to teach us and even came to our place to inspect the pond when we thought we had goofed up. We just returned from a cruise and we had left our 5 month old wired haired dachshund with them. Our baby is a wild child with a ton of energy. We received photos everyday and they worked their magic with her while we were away. She got a lot of attention and socializing with the staff and other dogs. It has made such a difference in her behavior. It is such a relief to know that we can go away with peace of mind and not have to worry about our new fur baby. They adored her and I always knew that if I was at the beach or across the ocean in London, that I could trust that the dogs and my home were both in very capable hands. Joanie knows the island and comes highly recommended by the vet hospital. She is truly worth her weight in gold and goes above and beyond, treating your pets as if they were her own. DASH TO KILL "OUT WITH THE OLD"…read more Twelve year old lab mix Chrissy was an "oldie but a goodie." Chrissy had a lot of life in her and was enjoying her golden years. Chrissy was killed by the Atlantic County Humane Society Animal Shelter. This cruel and needless act brings new meaning to the word "shelter". The owner and operator of the Atlantic County Humane Society, Mr. Steven Dash, is a former humane law enforcement officer. Mr. Dash served as a Governor's appointee on the Board of the New Jersey State SPCA. Mr. Dash is a certified animal control officer and is quite familiar with the law relating to animals. In November of 2013 the Atlantic County Humane Society adopted Chrissy to a local family. In April of 2021 the family situation changed and Chrissy was brought back to the Atlantic County Humane Society in hopes that she would go to another home. A surrender form was filled out for Chrissy listing her habits and likes/dislikes as well as what she liked to eat. While submitting the surrender form another form was also presented. This was a euthanasia form. It is explained that this was just in case Chrissy could not be adopted. The very next morning, not even 24 hours later, the owner came back for Chrissy to bring her home. Chrissy was destroyed because she was old. This is the Atlantic County Humane Society Animal Shelter policy. This rush to kill Chrissy is a violation of state law. Pursuant to the law, all surrendered animals must be held for seven days and put up for adoption. Even if the animal is brought in for euthanasia a shelter must still provide the seven day grace period. Its not relevant if Chrissy was surrendered for adoption or surrendered for euthanasia. The affirmative duty of the shelter remains the same. The need to hold stray animals has been the law for decades. The main thrust was towards public health (rabies) and property rights (owner right to reclaim). In June 2012 the legislature determined that not only property issues and public health issues must be protected by law but that the life of the animal must be protected. The law was amended requiring that an animal relinquished by an owner must be offered for adoption for seven days before being destroyed. (4:19 - 15.16e ).
