Increasingly I seem to be the go-to-person for friends and family when a photographer is needed for…read morean event. To be honest, it's very nerve racking because I am not a professional photographer. I'm just a dad who has a really nice camera because I got tired of getting fuzzy photo's while on vacation with my wife and children. Even though I can't see myself doing this for a living, I'm always honored when people I know trust me with such an important day. My friends got married here last weekend and out of the 4 weddings I've been asked to be the lead photographer, this place has to be my favorite location. Quaint is defined as having an old-fashioned attractiveness or charm; oddly picturesque. Thompson House and Gardens is the quintessential poster child for the word quaint. From a photographer's standpoint, they offer beautifully manicured lawns with a variety of venues scattered around the grounds for prime photo opportunities. Sweeping lawns, fountains, Roman gazebo and even an old west saloon make for fun photos. Also, the house has a wraparound porch and the rear is equipped with a long rustic outdoor bar, barn-like shed, adorable mini-guest house and vine covered trellis walkway. The outdoor setting for a lawn wedding is as romantic as I've ever seen and the reception hall is picture perfect for both dining and dancing. The wedding party used the upper part of the home for pre-wedding preparations and privacy. Since the event was catered, there was no need for the kitchen, but there is one available. THE VERDICT It is absolutely beautiful here! Every guest I spoke with was in complete awe of this place, including myself. My wife and I have been considering renewing our vows for our 15th Anniversary next year and Thompson House & Gardens is going to be tops on my list. They made this day so special for the young couple. The grounds and the barn area is kept up great. Kitchen, bathrooms, groomsmen loft, bride suite were spotless. Great place to have a wedding. The staff was accommodating, though I think the flow of the reception and overall direction could have been handled a bit better. Maybe a bit more experienced or seasoned folks that know the procession of how weddings go or flow. One of the highlights was the food! The pasta bar was a hit, with options like stuffed pasta, chicken pasta, and salmon pasta...all delicious and well prepared. Staff did remove the food rather quickly as there was enough for seconds but there were folks that didn't even get their firsts. They did accommodate me with a plate to give as one of the groomsmen didn't get one in time. So they made a few huge plate options to make up for it. The bar service was also top tier, thanks to the bartender Roxanne. She made sure the drinks kept flowing and wasn't skimping, which I appreciated and after all, it was paid for. The venue itself made for stunning pictures, and I especially loved the open outdoor area, which sparked so many ideas for a grand entrance. First off... The venue itself is very nice. We feel it was very high priced and that their "$1000…read moreoff" promotion was ridiculous, taking the venue itself from $6495 down to $5495... Especially when they charge so much for everything else. There is mandatory coordinator that they charge you $850 for, they also charge $400 for the bridal room and the $400 for the groom room for the day of, they misled us into thinking that we would be able to provide our own alcohol, which we find out after signing the contract that they "don't allow that anymore" and that the girl who showed us the venue "was mistaken". We had 110 people there, and the bill just for Chapman Hill was $10,215...That did not include ANY of the vendors. Again, its very pretty place to get married...We loved it! BUT...here are the reasons we give them 3 stars and not 5... 1.) You pay $400 for each the bride and groom cabins for the day ($800), and they literally took our stuff out of the rooms starting at 6pm, when we had a 5pm ceremony. When we expressed our concerns, Susan sharply says, "Its in the contract. Its in the contract."...not even allowing me get anything out of my mouth. She then continues, "We need to get everything out so that our cleaning people can come. Also, we don't want anything left behind, so thats why we do it this way." I can tell you...things were left behind, things were lost, and it cost us money. 2.) The groom's cabin...nobody bothered to turn on the heat before we arrived. We started arriving at 10am the morning of the ceremony to a cabin that was 45 degrees...not kidding. By the time 6pm rolled around, temperature inside was at 62 degrees. Also, though the bridal cabin was probably well worth the $400, that grooms cabin was NOT! Hardly any space to get ready, they have 4 TVs on the wall, which seems cool, until you go to change the channel and they all use the same Roku remote...hahaha. We finally just gave up on the cabin and walked outside. 3.) LISTEN...YOU HAD BETTER INSPECT AND TAKE PICTURES OF EVERYTHING YOU USE THAT IS THEIRS. 3 weeks after our wedding, I get an email from Don, the owner, stating that someone from our party damaged their "plastic wicker" furniture. He sent me pictures and the damage that was done, there is no way that anyone from our party caused that. There were full strands of the plastic missing, pieces obviously cut very sharply off to remove hanging strands...this damage was done throughout the life of that furniture. Bottom line, when raised that concern, they charged me for it anyway, taking it out of my deposit. 3 weeks later, and how many events after ours, and they bill us. They probably charged everyone else too...got themselves new "wicker" furniture from Lowes. 4.) The $850 for the coordinator, meh. The coordinator was nice and all, you're sold a bill of goods that she will always keep a drink in your hand, we won't have to worry about anything, "I'll be here making sure everything goes smoothly,"...Not really. We had to get our own drinks, we find out 3 weeks later furniture "was damaged by our group", shoot...As the groom, I only interacted with her 4 times that whole day. We had to ask if we could go down to the fridge and grab a few beers. LOL. Oh Well. Just know, that although the owners are super sweet and nice up to the day of the ceremony, giving you premarital booklets, super responsive, explaining "everything" to you, when push comes to shove, they are running a business, and you are a paycheck.

The owners and staff were very accommodating and ensured that our every need was met. The bridal suite and newly completed groom's suite provided perfect accommodations for everyone to prepare for the wedding and a place for family to crash after the evening reception. The accommodations are meticulously decorated and comfortable. Breakfasts are catered by a local restaurant between 7am - 11am, and include scrambled eggs, bacon, orange juice, coffee, tea, several choices of baked goods, and even some Prosecco available if you want to concoct your own morning mimosa. In addition, beer, wine, and bottled still and sparkling waters are available all day, along with some crunchy packaged snacks in the afternoon. The location is in the Five Points area, which has many excellent restaurants within walking distance. We also noticed that Milledge Ave. is a popular jogging route for students in the morning. Not into jogging? A pleasant walk among the shade trees is a lovely diversion along the route as well. Parking is adjacent to the building and included. Access to the rooms and building are through an app which is easy to use. We felt like personal guests of the owners, and they ensured that we were satisfied with everything from start to finish. After our recent stay, I can't imagine staying anywhere else when visiting Athens again. We will definitely be back.

I am a big fan of luxury and this place really hit all the marks - beautiful rooms with fun modern luxury furnishings, beautiful common areas, very comfortable. We were wandering around the common areas to get coffee in the mornings. It was all just lovely. The owners really care about their customers and about ensuring that everything goes smoothly. We appreciated that. We will be back.
