the night is my friend. i know it well, but at times it is my nemesis. i have driven so much on…read morethis big road that it feels like an old girlfriend that you are too lazy to dump. it's been a long day. what was it? 18 hours? something like that. the red and white car lights dance like fireflies. the somnolent enchantress does her dance. i snap my head back from the nod. i roll down the window even if it is winter. the dance continues. should i pull over at the rest stop? nothing seems to be working. then a song plays on the radio. a song that has not been heard in years. Dumb Things. that old Paul Kelly and the Messengers song. the synapses fire. the fingers tap. the volume increases. then My Morning Jacket comes over the airwaves. the road continues but it is no longer dark. New Pornographers play. some old Frank Zappa. Bright Eyes. Robert Plant & Allison Krauss. Sly and the Family Stone. the Nighthawks. the Arctic Monkeys. it's only when the static sets in that i realize that i have made it home. i pull up in front of my house and turn off the ignition. WTMD probably saved my life tonight. thank goodness there wasn't a Towson basketball game that night. i might still be on I-95.

WTMD is the great alternative radio station in town. They're likely to play anything they want at…read moreany given moment. I find it a little unfortunate that means they play a LOT of standards from the 70s and 80s, but they do go right back to modern/eclectic selections. They really shine when they play blocks of music based on themes. Weasel's Wild Weekend is a great showcase for interesting music that you don't always hear, and they do blues shows and other off the beaten path segments. They do a lot of community concerts and events, including Baltimore-themed contests through phone apps (which usually only work with the most up to date OSs.) This is truly a home town station for music lovers.

WPFW is no longer in Adams Morgan; they moved to K street, over a year ago. Unfortunately, Yelp…read morewouldn't let me update this, so I am unable to check in when I am at the radio station. WPFW is, by far, my favorite local radio station. Founded in 1977, WPFW is one of an elite group of Pacifica Foundation radio stations which are solely supported by community listeners. Unlike NPR, for example, which accepts a large amount of corporate underwriting which shows up in the form of biased coverage, Pacifica radio stations are free of these influences, and therefore, very grassroots and equal opportunity. They call themselves "Jazz and Justice," but they are so much more. They are the embodiment of free speech, not hate speech, not oppression, but determined to giving "a voice to the voiceless." There is nowhere else on your FM dial where you can listen to Native Americans speak about tribal issues, several times a week. There is nowhere else where you can call in to speak with experts on federal employee, postworker, and whistleblower workers' legal rights, hear local musicians perform live, hear about several DC area non-profits every week, write in to receive professional advice on mental health issues, and hear about local and proven do-it-yourself substance abuse recovery programs. There's also wonderful international news and music programming, from Haitian music to blues. WPFW listeners helped have a local roadway named for a DC blues musician. They gave out CD's at the program and I have been playing Nap Turner in my car every day since then! I'm so grateful for WPFW teaching me about history, broadcasting Justice of Else and other important programs like Ta-Nehisi Coates' Howard University speech (returning to the University for the first time since he was a student), introducing me to new music and local businesses, events like Step Afrika and free jazz performances, legal information, and so, so much more. I was about to say, this is the main thing I would miss about DC if I moved, but you can catch the live streaming audio online! The drawback would be that wherever I moved, would probably not have a local Pacifica Station (Berkeley's KPFK and NYC's WBAI - which I listened to growing up, are also Pacifica stations but there are not many others.) The local focus and relevance is one of the main attributes. Please donate money and/or time to keep WPFW alive!!! And please check it out, you may just fall in love, as I have. I LOVE YOU, WPFW!!!

This station airs a delightful range of music genres and has fascinating public affairs programs…read more Music is especially prevalent on the weekends. I enjoy all of the jazz, blues, Cajun, American Songbook, rhythm and blues, oldies, and world music-- with the occasional classical tune added. And WPFW FM has actual air personalities who take calls and provide the history of the artists and songs. Programming is very diverse--hooray! This is the only station on which I heard a DJ explain one of the Jewish holidays, for example.
