If I could give less than 1 star, I would! Went for a 2nd opinion for our very sick dog. Should have left when a huge tick was walking across the exam room floor! The Vet said "your dog definitely does NOT have pancreatitis, get her some real food". Fast forward to a trip to the emergency Vet! They start treating for pancreatitis at a CPL test of 400. My dog was at 1,946!! I sent Wayside an email and got no reply. Be aware and don't always trust what your Vet says. Sometimes it's best to follow your gut. My little old Shihtzu, Griff, had a case of glaucoma and needed to have his eye removed. I was nervous about putting him through a surgery in his little old state, but Wayside got to work and Griff is good as new again! Google results had the price range as $750-1500 and Wayside charged 750, which was nice. The front desk staff was friendly and efficient on each visit (consultation/bloodwork/meds, follow up to see if surgery still needed, surgery). Griff may be old, but he's a defensive firecracker when he enters a vet clinic and the vets/techs all handled his outbursts really well and answered all the questions I had. I was prepared for the worst on the day of his surgery, but he emerged with an eye area that looked shockingly unharmed and he was immediately more active when we got back home than he'd been in months (glaucoma had him in a funk and he was full of some good drugs). It's been a couple weeks now and Griff is comfortable and cuddling and back to taking his famous 20hr catnaps again, thanks to Wayside. read more

Came here because our rescue would pay for the vet fees up to neutering if we used their preferred vet. Luckily, I didn't have anything go wrong at the appointments with my pet, but the practice just seems really disorganized. Maybe I caught them at a bad time (just switched to a new system), but there were multiple times they'd mess up information which didn't inspire confidence when I had to leave my pet with them for the neuter. Some of the things they did: called me several times during one day to confirm the same appointment (I always spoke to them as if it was the first time because my guess was someone wasn't recording they had already spoken to me), being suuuper super loud in the back rooms while we waited to see a doctor (I hate being picky about that because I love joking with my coworkers but that conversation was kinda inappropriate), asking me for my pet's shot record when they were the only vet they had ever been to, not recording a shot given last appointment but being "pretty sure" he had it, having my boy down for a spay instead of a neuter due to misreading charts lol, forgetting someone should bring my pet out for pick up after I checked in and having me sit in the waiting room for 15+mins even though I kept interacting them to remind them I was still waiting and only remembered after they wanted to show a coworker a tiktok and they said "wait are we alone?", and forgetting I had signed "I would like a pet cone" on my neuter consent form and sending us home without one. I want to make it clear that some of these things aren't end of the world for me because I get being a little disorganized, dealing with a new system, having a good coworker relationship, etc. but I gotta say having them not have my pet's shot records, miraculously finding them, and then not having them updated upon his last appointment before his neuter was not ok and made my anxiety about the neuter ten times worse. They're a friendly bunch and I appreciate that a lot, but a little more professionalism or at least a "I know what I'm doing" tone would put people's nerves at rest. I know before my pet was taken back, another couple in front of me was having similar issues and were really stressed out about it. At my preferred vet that I take my older cat to and that I'll take my kitten to in the future, they're always super on top of things and can have a casual conversation with you but easily give off an air of knowing exactly what they are doing and that they are reliable. I've never had any issues with records, pricing, etc and they keep me in the loop about what's happening the entire time I'm in their office or just waiting. I'd like to see that from wayside because they're a good group and capable of it. The vet is probably not anyone's favorite place to be - helping them feel comfortable, cared for, and like they can completely trust you should be top priority. Dr. Lewis and his staff are the best. I requested them to conduct an international health exam for air travel to Chile. This was for my two cats, Rantavious and Walter. I had Rantavious first arrive via American Airlines Cargo (Live Animals). Walter is coming in the second shipment, once Valparaiso leaves quarantine. But first, an aside: It is said that former athletes make the best physical therapists, because they understand what it's like to be injured, meaning they can psychologically relate to their clients. Dr. Lewis played tennis at UGA and successfully examined my two absolute units of cats. One is an 11 y.o. Maine Coon, and the other is a 2 y.o. American Longhair mix. Both of my cats are very large-- 20 and 22 lbs -- and definitely needed a former athlete to do the job. After all, who else can relate? These guys put away 900-1000 calories, each, a day -- no kidding. I'm not taking my cats to be inspected by some wimp of a veterinarian. No, sir. Provided I'm back in America, only Dr. Lewis. Okay, back to the matter at hand. Dr. Lewis and his staff are the best for two primary reasons: 1.) The quality and thoroughness of the exam. I can vouch for this, since my older cat, Rantavious, made it successfully to Chile. He is healthy, happy and well, only four days later. (And he can be notoriously salty after travel) Suffice it to say, Dr. Lewis was correct in certifying him to fly. Chilean customs is notoriously bureaucratic and difficult. Any mistake would have led to an impasse and an outright rejection, but Dr. Lewis' and his staff's thoroughness meant that I encountered no such problems. The price was 230$ per cat. Best money I've ever spent. You do NOT want to mess around with Chilean customs. 2.) When I discovered I had forgotten to fill out some paperwork, only three days prior to my cats' flight, Dr. Lewis filled it out for me SAME DAY, ON A WEEKEND, and faxed it back. It was back to me within about an hour. Talk about a turnaround time. Some vets would have tried to charge for another appointment, but not this one. He's got your cats' best interests at heart. Thanks again, folks at Wayside Animal. "El león ha aterrizado en Chile." Throw your money at these guys for vet service. You won't be disappointed. If you are coming from Ellijay, don't even ask for directions which are 10 miles from the vaccination site. I called for an appointment, and TOLD THEM NO, I could not come bring my dog on that day offered. Somebody put that appointment down anyway. When we finally found the place, the very rude large woman said, "we don't have an appointment for you today, we can't see you." After driving in pouring rain with a dog in great pain, she became hostile, insulting, and blaming me for coming on the wrong day. Very poor CS no skill with handling an already upset pet parent. I would NEVEER HAVE MADE AN APPOINTMENT ON THE DAY GIVEN. SOMEBODY PUT IT IN THE COMPUTER WRONG. No apology, and the DOG is the one that suffered, b/c the person cared more about being right, than for a suffering pet. And no, they weren't crowded. read more

tl;dr - vet injured our cat, refused to take responsibility for their actions When we moved to Jasper, we had eight cats, and four of them were Sphynx. We took one of them in for a dental, and asked the vet to check his ears while he was there. Sphynx often get extreme ear crud, and we wanted to make sure that there wasn't anything else going on. While he was anesthetized, the vet on duty very aggressively cleaned his ears, and ruptured one of his eardrums. We found out later when we saw blood coming out of his ear. We rushed him to the 24-hour emergency hospital in Blue Ridge, where they diagnosed the ruptured ear drum, and gave him pain killers and antibiotics. We called them the following day, and spoke to the owner/head vet. He refused to accept responsibility, and would not even offer an apology, much less pay for the emergency visit. Unfortunately, the experience has had a lasting negative impact on our cat; his relationship with all the other cats in our house declined very sharply following his injury. He had gotten along will with all of the other cats, and now he can only tolerate two of them. I would very strongly advise seeking an alternate place to take an animal that you care about. The owner has a fantastic manner with people, and is very personable, but his unwillingness to accept responsibility for things that happen at his practice, or to hold other vets accountable for what they do at his practice, is an absolute deal-breaker. read more

We had a great experience at Wayside Animal Hospital! My puppy had double surgery there recently (for neuter and cherry eye) and these were the key takeaways: 1) Pre-op communication was excellent. The Vet Assistant clearly communicated the pre-op instructions along with the cost of the surgery (which was more than fair compared to vets in Atlanta where we also got quotes). Result: Final bill was exactly what was quoted! 2) Check in was on time, friendly and put us at ease. Even though this was our first time meeting the office staff and vet, we felt very comfortable handing over our pup for surgery. They treated my pup like their own and made sure he was comfortable right from the start, which we really appreciated. Ryan went above and beyond. They also were very accommodating when I presented them with an e-collar that I bought on Amazon to use post-op versus the traditional plastic cone. 3) Easy follow-up: When we returned 10 days later for a check-up and to make sure everything was healing as it should be, they were so nice and did not charge us for an office visit. **THIS is EXCELLENT customer service and veterinary care! We highly recommend this vet. Surgery was performed by Dr. Parker in the Jasper office. Check-up was with Dr. Lewis. Thank you Wayside for all you have done! read more

I can't speak for the Foothills location because Dr. Tomlinson was amazing when she was at VCA in Ellijay . As far as the Cove rd location , Dr. Parker seems to care only about money . I wouldn't recommend her . I don't know if Dr. Lewis has made her like this or if she is on her own. read more

We picked up my cat from a chemical castration and when i got her she was soaken wet. I asked the receptionist and the vet if they washed her and they said yes. When I got her out of the cat carrier she was covered in her own pee (over half of her body) and they sprayed something on her to hide the smell. I can't wash her until the stitches come out... wtf read more

Every aspect of our care recieved from Dr Lewis and Dr Parker has been the best. Dr Lewis saved our little Sophia with his timely diagnosis and Dr Parker was wonderful when Sophia broke her leg! We just moved to the area and our miniature Chihuahua had some vomiting issues. My husband called the first vet in the phone book and got what we thought was a good price for an apt. We knew our pup needed shots and needed worm medication (hence vomiting issue) We we quoted $80 for up to date shots, worm medication and apt fee. When I left I had forked out $140 for a nausea shot she did not need, antibiotics and worm medication. She never got her shots and we wont be going back. The staff was the only highlight, very nice folks but the cost was completely out of our price range even coming from a larger area. We would be better off going with our friends current Vet located closer to town or travel an hour to our old vet. read more

I have been so impressed with the staff at this clinic. After my dog was attacked by a pack of dogs they were wonderful. They were very caring and professional. They stayed late to provided the life saving surgery she required. My previous vet told me to bring her in the next day since it was ten till five. I will use wayside animal clinic in the future. During the last week our follow up visits the staff have continued to be friendly and helpful. The clinic is clean and well maintained. read more
