Johnson, a U.S. Navy test pilot and Goldsboro native who tragically died in a crash in 1941. Uniquely, it remains the only Air Force base named after a Navy officer. During the war, the base served as a vital training ground for aviation cadets and replacement pilots, particularly for the P-47 Thunderbolt. The base was deactivated in 1946 as part of post-war downsizing. And then the base was reactivated in 1956 under the Tactical Air Command. Today, it is presently home to the F-15E Strike Eagle and the 916th Air Refueling Wing, playing a critical role in global air operations. It's worth noting that it was in 1961 when a B-52 bomber broke apart in mid-air near Goldsboro. It had taken off from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base carrying two Mark 39 thermonuclear bombs. One of them parachuted safely to the ground. The other crashed into a muddy field at high speed and remains there to this day. One of the bombs was prevented from detonating by a single low-voltage safety switch after other preventative switches failed. Yes, North Carolina was nearly nuked. Have a read of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1961_Goldsboro_B-52_crash. I stopped to take this picture of the historical marker in front of the main gate. I'm sure I'm on some list as a result. The marker reads, "Field used, 1942-46, for flight training by Army Air Forces; reopened in 1956. Named for Seymour Johnson, naval aviator and Goldsboro native." It was named for General Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a daring and trusted officer under George Washington. It was settled by English and Scotch-Irish colonists who moved inland from the coastal regions after 1750. The original county seat was Waynesborough, established in 1787 on land owned by Andrew Bass, but it was later moved to Goldsboro in 1850 following public votes in 1845 and 1847. The Wayne County Courthouse was completed in 1913. Designed by prolific architect Frank Pierce Milburn in a Classical Revival style. I've seen other Milburn courthouses including Columbia County (Lake City Florida), Wise County (Virginia), Boyd County (Catlettsburg Kentucky) and Lowndes County (Valdosta Georga). The courthouse absolutely reflects the grandeur and power of the county. Its most striking features are the large porticos on the east, north, and west facades, each supported by four classical columns that rise to pediments at the roofline. Inside, the main courtroom occupies the second floor, serving both the County Superior Court and County District Court of the 8th Judicial District. There is street parking nearby and don't miss Veterans Memorial Park across the street. [Review 752 of 2025 - 4184 in North Carolina - 24312 overall]

The DMV asks citizens seeking to renew their driver's licenses to make an appointment. This would work great.....IF IT WORKED. It doesn't. It is impossible to get an appointment because the online booking system doesn't go out more than 90 days, and it's always full! My driver's license needed to be renewed in February 2025. I tried from November onward to get an appointment without success! You can wait in line on standby....and we arrived before 8 am, to find a long line already queued up. An employee came out to inform us that standbys would not be seen until noon! Oh - and the staff is at lunch during those times, of course. I felt ai had no choice but to wait. I am disabled, so this meant having to sit on the ground. I was not seen that day. I asked a staffmember if I could bring a lawn chair and was told no, for whatever reason. Went back the next day. This time I waited until 1 pm, when the supervisor (who was extremely polite and professional) came out and told the folks waiting in line that we could scan the symbol on a sign and be placed on the list. She said we could wait in our cars and they'd text our phones. It was too hot to wait in my car, so I sat near the door in the shade. The supervisor came out again to check on me and I asked her again about the lawn chairs. She was surprised I'd been told no and said folks can do that and often do. When I explained about my disability, she took me inside to a handicapped seating section (which I had no idea existed up to this point). I had to wait until almost 3 pm, but I DID get my license renewed. I had to wait in line for 2 days and have a nice sunburn to go with my new license. The staff I have no complaints about. They were always polite, despite upset citizens. I was a state employee for almost 20 years, so I understand that they can only deal with what they're given to work with. The STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA can - and should - do better for its citizens! There was a mobile unit parked in the lot that could be utilized if the DMV was provided with adequate staffing! It should be! I will be writing my state representative about this.
