Johnson, a U.S. Navy test pilot and Goldsboro native who tragically died in a crash in 1941. Uniquely, it remains the only Air Force base named after a Navy officer. During the war, the base served as a vital training ground for aviation cadets and replacement pilots, particularly for the P-47 Thunderbolt. The base was deactivated in 1946 as part of post-war downsizing. And then the base was reactivated in 1956 under the Tactical Air Command. Today, it is presently home to the F-15E Strike Eagle and the 916th Air Refueling Wing, playing a critical role in global air operations. It's worth noting that it was in 1961 when a B-52 bomber broke apart in mid-air near Goldsboro. It had taken off from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base carrying two Mark 39 thermonuclear bombs. One of them parachuted safely to the ground. The other crashed into a muddy field at high speed and remains there to this day. One of the bombs was prevented from detonating by a single low-voltage safety switch after other preventative switches failed. Yes, North Carolina was nearly nuked. Have a read of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1961_Goldsboro_B-52_crash. I stopped to take this picture of the historical marker in front of the main gate. I'm sure I'm on some list as a result. The marker reads, "Field used, 1942-46, for flight training by Army Air Forces; reopened in 1956. Named for Seymour Johnson, naval aviator and Goldsboro native." What's the point of a schedule? I sure don't know. Also, the women's restroom on the first floor of the Wayne Learning Center has too many mirrors. It's a perfectly adequate place to pee, but when you're trying to wash your hands and mind your own business, you're in weird-angle funhouse hell. I feel like they could have shaved some off the mirror budget and worked on some good calendars for campus police? Just a thought.

There are some functions in the office area that could use some help. For the first week I was in the wrong class and had i not dug into why I wasn't on the roster I would've never known. There should be some attendance alert email sayn something like "you were marked absent in X class". Also the 1yr residency should not be required for retired military. But I guess I have to write my congressman about that one. I do like that the school is relatively small and easy to get around. It does blow that they don't have a sports program, it would nice to see a baseball, soccer, basketball, or football game. Only thing that disappointed me is that they don't offer much of a selection of seated classes during the summer. Being that I'm using my GI bill to pay for school it is required that I have a traditional seated class. So I was forced to take the summer off. Darn ;) A lot of online courses available. Start registration early especially for those out of state! It takes a while to get all that paperwork together. Be kind to the registration ladies. They are constantly dealing with complaining, angry, huffypuffy customers. The times that I have witnessed this it has not been the office staffs fault. Customers wait till the last minute to get things done and get angry when it's not readily available. Although I think there are ways that the ladies could ease the delivery of bad news or find a way to help the customer find an alternative solution to the problem.
