I have done everything I could to get help, My husband and I searched and searched for a…read morepsychiatrist that could help me and find the right treatment/medication that would work. I was put on a waitlist for 4 months and when I was supposed have my appointment he called and told me that he thinks that I would be putting him and his staff at risk and that I need to cancel and reschedule, ( I had a sinus infection) I've been having lots of bad side effects from the medication I was put on, so I called to reschedule and was told that he's not taking anyone new and that I need to wait for another 3 to 4 months to get an appointment and that I was put at the top of the list. My brother in-law is a psychiatrist who has tried to get in contact with him 3 times, each time leaving a voice message. He never responded to him. I called and called no response, later on I receive a call from dr.cohen, expecting to have a pleasant and professional conversation. Nope, from the time I picked up he was very rude, aggressive and was raising his voice at me. He would not let me talk or explain my self. Told me that if I was having that much of a problem and crises that I need to just go and sign my self in. I had tried to interfere to tell him that I had not long ago. He told me to stop talking and that I'm not his problem or his responsibility. He had absolutely no respect, he acted cold and like he didn't have the slightest care. I have never ever expected a "so called psychiatrist" to talk to someone who is desperately seeking his help or a psychiatrist that was available to help. I'm baffled, he is a joke and shouldn't even be in this line of work. Please don't even try with guy, I should have listened to the reviews and not given him benefit of the doubt. I'm trying to share my message and review to as many people as possible so they know what kind of a man he is.

I saw Dr. Cohen for about a year because I needed medication for long-standing depression. I…read morethought that we got on well and I was satisfied with his care. But about a year ago I called his office (on a Wednesday), requesting an appointment because I had an increase in symptoms. His receptionist called back on Friday, offering an appointment on the following Monday. I told her that I had another medical appointment at that time. When she transferred the call to Dr. Cohen, he said that if it was an emergency I should be able to see him on Monday. (If I cancelled the other appointment, I would be liable for a cancellation fee and, in any case, an 'emergency' was already not relevant, since I had first called on Wednesday.) He said that he was 'fed up' with me. I had no idea what he was talking about, since I wasn't aware that there were any problems. As he continued to rant, I hung up. The only explanation that I can think of is that he confused me with another patient. Needless to say, I didn't see him again. This behavior was upsetting and unprofessional. I have told 2 other psychiatrists about it, and they both told me that they had heard similar stories from others.

I was very fortunate to be referred to him by my GP, who as unable to understand my problem with marked insomnia - for which Dr Paragas immediately referred me to Dr Jun Wada at his lab at UBC. There was a neurological basis for my insomnia and some other psychiatric problems, for which Dr Paragas immediately began successfully treating me. He later told me that when I began describing aspects of my insomnia, he immediately suspected the brain disorder that Dr Wada discovered I had. My problems weren't limited to just a brain disorder. CSA and mental and physical abuse at home (a "triple-whammy" as Dr Paragas described it) had made my life nearly unbearable up until that point, and his care made it possible for me to understand what I was facing in life, and how to deal with it - and he did so with great care and an amazing sense of humour, such that I was able to successfully attend post-secondary education and eventually land a job with a pension and benefits that help me to this day. In the early 2000s, a life-threatening medical mishap caused me to develop chronic PTSD, for which Dr. Paragas began treating me until he retired about a decade later. I don't think I could have ever been as fortunate as I was than being referred to Dr Paragas - he was also a highly-skilled clinician - whenever I had casually mentioned symptoms of a medical problem I was experiencing. He was always able to name the problem before I sought treatment with my GP, and what to expect in terms of treatment and outcome. The community in which he practised benefitted greatly from his wisdom and knowledge, as did I, for many decades. He was a brilliant doctor in every respect - and I'll never forget how much he helped me in life.

I started seeing Susan Hakeman about nine months ago for a mental health evaluation. From the…read morestart, our sessions felt very transactional and impersonal. I felt stuck since there weren't other psychiatrists available, and she was partnered with my therapist, which I hoped would be helpful. One session stands out: I told her I was having s**cidal thoughts and didn't know what to do. Her response was simply, "Oh no, that's not good," and then she asked if I had told my therapist. The call ended after 15 minutes, leaving me feeling confused and like my well-being didn't matter. She is nearing retirement, and it felt like she wasn't fully invested in her patients anymore. I left my sessions feeling more disheartened than when I started. If you are in the same position as me, do not waste your time or money by seeing care with Susan Hakeman, you will be incredibly disappointed.

She has anxiety about answering her phone so didn't pick up. I called and explained this apologetically and received a quite curt phone call from the doctor saying that she has a four month wait list and there are no exceptions if you miss your appointment. This to me does not sound like a practitioner that cares about her patients or is willing to work to help them get better. We have been working for years to get her into a good psychiatrist that cares and can help her manage her severe ptsd level anxiety - I'm so glad we dodged this bullet. This one sounds like she's just in it for the money. I hope one day she remembers that patient care is supposed to be the priority. I just read the other reviews left for her, and agree she is super rude.
