West End Lane Books is everything a book store should be. The only trouble is they were playing Bob…read moreDylan when I arrived. I can not stand Bob Dylan. This store had a nice artsy sort of selection of the type of books people read who live in the NW postcodes, meaning NW3,NW5, NW6. I think this is not a bad thing at all. W.E Lane Books also had an impressive sale selection. I found the Modern Jewish Girl's Guide to Guilt reduced from 15.99 to 5.99. You look around and see Penguin Titles mugs and 5 pounds of the Mighty Boosh Book (not sure if this is a desirable book to acquire or not, you decide). The staff also shows your their favourites, in a section. A good shop but can the Dylan. Yikes!

It's not big, but not too tiny, and is independently owned and operated. They carry all the latest fiction and non-fiction, and not just the best-sellers, either. They do special topical displays. Yesterday was a rack of about 10 books about finance and the global economic crisis. They have a large section of Jewish books, catering to the local demographic. Their sale/discount section is one of the best I've seen. It's a couple of shelves near the back, and one right under the cash counter, but they're not the typical cheapo books you see in those sorts of bins. I picked up books like The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-Search-Six-Million/dp/0007251939/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223300537&sr=8-1) (marked from £25 down to £9), The Rolling Thunder Logbook (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rolling-Thunder-Logbook-T-Bone-Burnett/dp/1860746403/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223300586&sr=1-1) (£14 down to £7), A Hedonist in the Cellar: Adventures in Wine (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hedonist-Cellar-Adventures-Wine/dp/0747588465/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223300656&sr=1-2) (£14 down to £7, I think), and more.

Anyone familiar with the depiction of the small independent bookshop in the (excellent) comedy…read moreseries Black Books will find the Big Green Bookshop a bit of a shock to the system. For the uninitiated, the main character of the TV show, Bernard Black, spends most of the time slouched behind his book-strewn desk, clutching a fag and bottle of cheap wine, and shouting at customers. I was delighted to discover that this is far from the case here. The owners of the Big Green Bookshop are chatty, friendly, polite and helpful and the shop is clean and extremely well ordered. There's also a coffee machine and some water on the side provided for browsers Their inventory, whilst limited by the size of their premises, is packed with interesting books that you might actually want to read. The co-owner I spoke to last time I was there also said they can order most things in in a day or so. What clinches the 5 star rating for me is that the same co-owner managed to guess the name of a book I had seen reviewed but had forgotten, from the two things I did remember: the word frog and the fact that I vaguely remembered that the author was sort of Hungarian. Not only this, but he pointed me in the direction of another book by the same author, and ordered the one I'd asked for in because he wanted to read it himself. What a legend.

A proper bookshop...but more importantly, and independent one!…read more I really like this place and am so happy that they still exist despite the convenience of online shopping. But it's actually at shops like this where I get inspired for a next book. I'm pretty much fed up with the personalisation of Amazon; while they probably know what I like, they cannot tell me what I might also like. And this is where the independent book sellers like The Stoke Newington Bookshop have a real margin: they have passionate and friendly staff who love to read themselves and they in turn can recommend their customers something totally unique...as long as you're willing to let them take you to undiscovered territory.

This large and popular bookstore is a good place to pick up a weekend's worth of reading. Frequented by many of the literati that live in the whereabouts of Stoke Newington, this spacious store also hosts book readings by local authors, and an occasional poetry night. They have a good range of children's books, as well as several magazines on arcane and current subjects. I found an interesting philosophy journal here, with short articles on the most challenging ideas of our times by eminent philosophers. Another addition to the overflowing bookshelf!

I love bookshops, and for that reason maybe my review is biased, but then is there really an…read moreimpartial Yelper among us? This is indeed the lovely local bookshop A S talks about, filled with the treasures you won't find in Waterstones. As Jill mentions it doesn't have the discounts and offers Waterstones/Borders have either. It can't afford to compete in that market, because it can't bulk buy and worse, people don't support their local businesses as much as they should (see my review for Dogan's). This shop is lovely though, deathly quiet as bookshops should be. I even take my iPod off, to appreciate the stillness, and to avoid anyone hearing tinny beats echoing in this church to literature. There is a section for everything, and each section has several hundred titles. Okay, maybe if we're looking for a book on Poland we're down to a choice of Rough Guides (every time), lonely planet (for those with a short attention span) or a local book on the breads of Northern Poland, but I am sure Muswell Hill isn't full of people writing theses on the economy of Poland since 1973 and therefore the selection suffices. Like A S I could relax and peruse for hours, which is why wish they had a chair or settee or something, they certainly lose a star for that. But I can't fault them on anything else. The lack of cheap deals is not something they can deal with easily, so get out and support them, but they have an excellent range of book related things (covers, bookmarks, calendars, etc..). The staff are friendly and knowledgable. It's everything a bookshop should be. I love bookshops. Ipso facto, 4 stars.

Muswell Hill Books has a decent selection. It's good to have a look around here whether your…read moreshopping for yourself or shopping for a gift. There isn't one section that is particularly big but there are lots of different categories of books. I also haven't seen many discounted or sale titles, which is disappointing. On the plus side, I will say that this shop is quiet and has a good selection of calendars (present time) and greeting cards. If you are an animal lover check out the the calendars. Even I, melted away looking at the greyhound puppies one. Lil rascals.

The books are arranged in various topics and it is easy to wander and find something you did not come here for. There is a tiny childrens section with a little chair for sitting which was great - as my son sat right down after a temper tantrum outside (he was sick of shopping!!) and got stuck into some reading !! Thank goodness -- a moment of relief and I was able to enjoy a moment reading the covers and opening the books and finally piccking out "bliss" a book about the geography of happiness.. cant wait to see how the Uk fares ! -

It is an independent business, which always goes down well. It is adorable in the way it is not too big, and the owners don't mind if you have a long browse through the shelves. Although it is small, it still manages to fit a variety of different books within its walls. The store has a real community feel about it. Like some of the other businesses on Broadway Market, there are little adverts for local events and things wanted and needed. As well as having staff recommendations in store, you can view them on the website, both current and past. The website can also keep you up to date with events held at the store.
