We enjoyed a pancake, with Quandong ice cream and Quandong sauce, finishing with a very nice cheese and fruit platter, enjoying the views along with the air conditioning. The cafe is of a modern design with exposed tubular steel arch supports, the floor is concrete inlayed with small stones, walls of wood and ply. Tables wooden with chrome supports, the dining chairs are black with chrome legs. The colour scheme of the Cafe is earthy, with some light bottle green walls. The building is designed to maximise views, of the gardens and the magnificent back drop of the Flinders ranges, while you relax and enjoy your desired food preference. The gardens are festooned with plants and shrubs, this time of the year many in bloom, most travellers would be unaware of the existence of many of these species. Great to view Sturts Desert Wild Pea in flower, the tracks are well signed, along with every plant and shrub which number in their hundreds. The back drop to the gardens are the Flinders Ranges beckoning you to drive over. A very memorable, relaxing visit.

A year ago I would have given this restaurant 5 stars: it has been one of our favourites for20+…read moreyears. However, after going there for lunch on Thursday I have downgraded it to three stars. The reasons for this are: The menus are presented on an A4 sheet of green paper, food on one side and wine on the other. Not the class of presentation we are used to here. The fish was the only menu item listed as GF; not every gluten intolerant person wants fish for lunch. We were specifically asked up front if we had any special dietary requirements but even so we were not told of any other GF alternatives. The home-made chorizo was slightly too dry and lacking in flavour. A sauce or relish was definitely required here. My wife had the pork belly. The waitress asked if she wanted it entrée or main size and said the main had 5 pieces of pork compared to 3 on the entrée. When the bill came we were staggered to see that to increase a $23 entrée to main was charged at an additional $28! I do not know how they can justify this. On the plus side the caramelised onion and Brie bruschetta was absolutely delicious and the bread roll was also very good, even though it was late in being served (we were beginning to think the butter dish was for decoration). Sorry Skillogalee, but you are no longer one of our 'must visit' establishments.

When it's busy, you'll need to book a sitting - either early or late (go for late because you have no set time to be out by and will be able to drink to your hearts content!) The veg and salad bar is fairly solid - not the most amazing, but not terrible either! Most recently i ordered a chicken snitty kilpatrick - it was huge and delicious! Prices are good too. Another handy thing to know is that you can take away drinks to take home from the front bar (as there is no separate bottle shop) - and the prices are pretty reasonable considering you're out in the country side!

Situated in the beautiful town of Melrose it is a must for a stop over on your way to explore the Upper Flinders Ranges with multiple walking tracks and Mountain Bike tracks suitable for all standards to explore.
