As they would explain to you, Izakaya is like a Japanese pub. Food serving sizes are therefore more adjustable than Iori. The owner of both restaurants are also more frequently found in Coo at this point. Food: the freshest Japanese food I have tasted in Canberra by far was in Iori, and now it's also easily available in Coo. I have went on 3 occasions thus far and have ordered a variety of things from the menu. I highly recommend the cold soba salad. It's vegetarian and the serving size is one of the largest in the menu, but it's a refreshing taste for summer. The sushi there are absolutely excellent. Salmon was sweet and succulent. The spider rolls are beautiful and they also come in half serving sizes for when you feel like doing a tasting session with friends. The cheesy tako balls are oh-so-wonderful, I can't describe it. And the Coo fried chicken is a light, healthiest fried chicken I have ever tasted. Service: as usual, Coo's staffs have a wonderful and attentive service as per Iori's. In my first visit, I found a strand of hair in my dish and was offered a a reduction in my bill (which I refused, as I know that hair in meals are pretty common accidents) and a coupon for a free drink (which I took). 3 visits later, they still remember me, still apologize for that mistake, which I thought was great in this age where customers are sometimes made to feel dispensable. Atmosphere: spaces are a little on the tight side, but they still attempt to spread out customers as much as possible, which offsets the feeling of being cooped up. Lighting is fantastic and when birthdays are celebrated, you feel like you are a part of the fun and joy regardless of whether it was your own party or not. If you like japanese food, and you have been to Iori's, Coo is a good place to visit as well :)

The majority of my friends ordered the Spelt and almond muesli, nutmeg poached pears, Greek style yoghurt for $13, and I guess it was pretty good too, as I heard sounds of bowls being scrapped towards end of the meal. The menu isn't very big, though they all read beautifully. The desserts were written on the board and appears to change frequently. Of note is that they are a number of items with extensive wait times, including an apple tartin for dessert, up to 40 mins worth of waiting - but it's written in the menu so you are aware of the wait time when you're deciding - really appreciated that. Started off with the Beetroot cured kingfish. It came in a dish, presented too beautiful to be eaten really! There was a bit of a difficultly differentiating the kingfish from the beetroot salad - but every morsel was beautiful and the kingfish slid beautifully in your mouth. Next was the ash crusted duck a l'orange style, meant for 2 pax. This was an interesting one. While we were waiting for it to come, the waiter brought the cooking duck to show us how it was cooked - in a block of still burning/smoking ash. It smelt so gorgeous and I really like that block of ash! We were salivating but it was still a few more minutes to go before it came back to the table, all shiny and gorgeous waiting to jump into my mouth. The duck was so beautiful it might be hard to do it justice. It was falling off the bone and melt in your mouth kind of juicy. The smokey taste to it was balanced by the sweetness of one of the oranges and the tartness of another (two types of planes were used). None of the tastes were overwhelming so you can still taste the subdued duck beneath it all. Absolutely gorgeous. The creme brûlée came last, with a fire going over it till the sugar caramelised. It was such a cool thing to watch the fire burn yet the custard remained cool and not marred. Service provided was great. They were attentive to us from the start, explaining what each item was and how it was cooked. If we had further questions, they would come throwing information at us, no worries. Particularly, I like how they showed me the duck in the block of ash. I was so excited I forgot to take a picture of it. Value for money - for the 2 of us, we spent about 110 dollars. It's definitely a little pricier than what I usually pay for dinner, but in this scenario it's worth every penny and then some. The quality of the food, the thought put behind the balance of the senses deserve to be appreciated, but I am glad it is at that price so it's still within the reach of people who appreciate good food.

While they do accomodate allergies and dietary requirements, they could be more accomodating to picky eaters, it's really hard to take groups or non-foodies here without lying about a dietary requirement on top of their real dietary requirement to ensure they don't get a whole tasting menu containing an ingredient they don't like because their dietary requirement changed their whole tasting menu. I.e. when I took someone lactose intolerant here, they accommodated that requirement, but not by removing the lactose off their listed menu, but by replacing their whole tasting menu with only seafood dishes. We didn't report they didn't like seafood because the listed menu didn't have much. They hated seafood. All my reviews are standardised to the following star ratings: 1. Customer service I.e. friendly, easy to book, etc. 2. Accessibility I.e. location, decor and scenery, easily assessable or flexible, etc. 3. Work, health and safety I.e. clean, safe, etc. 4.
