Tai-chi-Chuan School of Long Island - Bob Klein's Tai Chi

Tai-chi-Chuan School of Long Island

I have been studying Tai-Chi-Chuan here for approximately 4 years and started here on the…read morerecommendation of my doctor. My teacher, Bob Klein, is incredibly knowledgeable, but humble, patient and kind. He doesn't just teach what the movements of the form look like, he teaches all the inner mechanics which are what make it so beneficial to one's health and the way one feels. It also is what makes it so much fun and interesting. I always say I don't know which it helps more, my body or my brain! He teaches Qigong along with the Tai Chi, in preparation for the movements. He not only teaches you the health benefits of Tai Chi but the martial art aspects of it as well. There are classes for self defence and push hands as well. I noticed after studying with Bob for a while that I was able to apply the movements that I learned in class to the ways I moved in daily life (which has put a lot less strain on my joints) and the philosophies we learned in class that are part of Tai Chi Chuan have helped to reduce stress and to put things in better perspective. When I leave class, my mind is cleared, breathing is slower and if I came in stressed, I leave calm. I feel gratitude for each class. What is so nice about these classes is that one is never made to feel silly or embarrassed no matter how uncoordinated you feel (and believe me, I was very uncoordinated when I first started). He just wants you to learn it so you can get the same benefits and joy that he does from it and he will work with you in whatever way you need to achieve that. Bob encourages questions and never treats any question as silly. He is always happy to patiently go over whatever you need him to. I always come out of class learning something new. If I were to say I really loved going to class or that it has helped me enormously, it would be an understatement. It has literally changed my life. I had a serious accident approximately 3 1/2 years ago seriously injuring my back, ribs and elbow which required surgery. I felt like I could never be the same active person that I had always been. This was just a few months after I had started studying with Bob. I was not able to return to class for 6 months, but fortunately I had his DVD's to work with. As soon as I got out of the hospital I practiced my qigong and form using his DVD's . I was told I would need back surgery (but didn't have it) and that I could never open my arm fully again. I returned to class as soon as I was able to and could drive. I take several classes a week with Bob and practice at home. With class and practice, I cannot believe how good my back feels and I shocked my surgeon by being able to fully open my arm. I can be myself again. In the process I have also come a long way in my understanding of Tai chi. I think this school is unique in the amount of attention each person receives in class, the depth of Bob's knowledge, and the amount of attention to details he provides. It makes all the difference in the way one does the form. Most importantly, Bob and his wife, Jean, who is also certified to teach, and quite often gives us the benefit of her presence in the class as well, create a wonderful environment to learn in, one in which no one ever feels judged. Thank you Bob!

I went to EarthMindWellness center at Honor's Haven on a whim. I really needed to go on a retreat…read more I found this place through a google search that led me to bookretreat.com and this place was in the state of New York. Nicole was super responsive to my emails and made me feel comfortable. Once I arrived, a nice lady at the front desk checked me in as part of the R&R retreat and I was given the itinerary for the weekend. The room I was given was very spacious and had a view of the front grounds. Dinner was in the main dinning area of Honor's Haven Hotel and was organized by groups. I was surprised at how efficient and organized everything was. There were over 20 different groups seated plus a wedding and everything ran smoothly. The retreat included 3 meals (buffet style) a day all of which were well prepared and tasty. Nicole greeted me so warmly the first night that I came for dinner. I was by myself coming from a long way and she greeted me like an old friend. EarthMindWellness has its own floor in the hotel. It's super clean and has multiple spacious rooms for classes or treatments. The classes are for all levels. I was pretty new to yoga and brand new to tai chi, but they paid attention to each individual (there were 10 of us in the class). They often checked in on each person to see how they were doing and how they were feeling. Nicole even lent me a coat and sweater, because I didn't realize the temperature would be 20 degrees colder than nyc (duh) for our outdoor activities. Our retreat included guided meditation, a short hike to a nearby waterfall, lakeside tai chi, wellness classes, and free time for massage or any other activity. They really thought of everything. It was really peaceful and everything that I wanted and needed. Nicole also connected me to a center close to my home, so I can continue training. Definitely going back.

I've been here twice now, the second time was last September for a retreat and finally got to try…read moreout the rock wall, zip-line, challenge courses. I'll be coming back again next September! Food is great, so much natural beauty to explore like the waterfall and 120 stairs, if you come here I highly recommend doing one of the retreats to get the most out of your experience. There's so much to learn from the masters here!
