My experience level is kayaking a few times a year on lakes primarily, though I have done ocean harbors and coves also. Our group included some with more and less experience than that. The guides ask for your input ahead of time on what experience you are looking for, and dietary restrictions, which is great. Based on the weather forecast, our guide recommended we consider tandem kayaks. We normally prefer single kayaks but took the advice and were so glad we did as it absolutely helped in powering through the wind and waves of Lake Superior (and the presence of the rudder meant a relatively low amount of coordination required between the two paddlers). The Lost Creek team also quickly acted to put together a plan B when our initial trip to Sand Island was nixed due to a small craft advisory. We ended up going to Basswood island instead. I appreciated the water exit training we did before the trip. The food provided throughout was excellent. Our sights included a seastack, an arch, and a shipwreck. Most of all, the guides ensured we had a fun, safe adventure!

I've kayaked AK, HI and the San Juans (WA) and this was the best! It's a very short bus ride to Meyers Beach so you don't waste a lot of time getting on the water. As a side note, I later learned from another type of boat tour on Madeline Island that there are a few pretenders in the kayak tour business but Lost Creek is considered by locals to be one of the best!!

Less than a block from the "Main Street", and 2 blocks to the Madeline Island ferry line. We awoke to beautiful sunrises in our backyard of Lake Superior. Maybe 20 feet from the water, with nothing in our way but the lovely patio table provided by the condo. We were traveling with my parents, so we opted for the 2 bedroom, 2 bath. The condo was spacious enough where we weren't crowded on top of each other, and had plenty of space. Toiletries are provided, even though the pamphlet said they were not, as was a hairdryer. Kitchen was huge, living room nice, although the tv was on the one and only switched outlet for the living room (issue for parents, not us - we weren't watching it). We thought the beds were hard. We compared it to sleeping on a box spring. Not great, but doable. And the microwave was from 1983, older than the cousin we came to see get married. But it worked! We checked in on Friday early afternoon, and their wireless worked. An hour later it stopped working, and we had a really hard time with the AT&T E network (sloooooooooooooow). Every time I called to the office, all we got was their answering machine. Sure, I could have left a message, but I didn't. My fault I guess, as I figured I'd eventually reach someone. I was wrong, so we never had wifi. Note: This property is managed by The Winfield Inn. All the other relatives who were staying in hotels were jealous of our place. Yeah, it's really nice. I'd stay here again without hesitation.

Even the tops of the curtain rods were dust-free.). Since there isn't a lot of info available about these, I thought I would take the time to write a more thorough review. There is a lovely sand beach available, across the street, but it is across the street and down a bit. Not far, but the view directly across the road from the front porch of the cabin is a huge house. You cannot see the lake from the cabin. I assumed you could, and was disappointed. Also, the beach is shared with the other Bog Lake rentals. This was never a problem for us, but it did change how we used the firepit at night. The cabin is very close to the road - maybe 15' from the front door to the road. The cabin has three bedrooms, and there are no doors on the bedrooms, just curtains. The door to the bathroom is an accordion vinyl door. Not a lot of privacy at all. I would not stay here with kids who were under 6 or so. The compression tank and water heater are in the bathroom, with all the attendant knobs and pipes and drain tubes. I just imagined a matchbox car going down the open drain pipe from the compression pump. There is a small couch and one chair in the dining room/kitchen, along with a dining table and four chairs. There isn't a living room. There is a spacious screened in front porch, which we used all the time. It has an eating table, a swing, and two more chairs. Bikes and kayaks are free to use while you are there, and are all in good, working condition. The town beach is within biking distance of the cabin. Overall, I thought it was fine but too expensive for what it is. There is not a big woods or private feel, and the lack of privacy between the three bedrooms is a problem for a larger group. I was also disappointed that we couldn't see or hear the lake from the cabin. But, it was clean, well stocked, the owners were lovely, and the beach is beautiful.

I didn't even know he was the owner until we were leaving. I had assumed he was just a friendly bartender. He was tending the bar and kept giving us great tips on where to go and what to do by The Great Lakes area. He showed us books and maps and welcomed everyone into the bar. My only complaint is, I wish there was a place like this in NYC so I could drop by more frequently. But, alas, I'll have to come to Iron River, Wisconsin again to say hi to Kevin and everyone at The Spot Supper Club. Until then, I'll have great memories.

We live in the Twin Cities and needed a peaceful place to relax that was close to good restaurants and shopping (for me) and ice fishing and cross-country skiing for both of us. I travel extensively for my job and didn't want to stay in a hotel or have to board our dog. This is our first VRBO experience and it was amazing! Ashland is a quaint town that has a wonderful Chinese restaurant! The town is located on Chequamegon Bay which we followed in our car one day and ended up in Bayfield -gorgeous! From Bayfield you can take a ferry to Madeline Island which we plan to do this summer when we return. Bayfield is a shopper's paradise with so many unique shops and boutiques. We stopped by the Apostle Islands information center and learned about touring the islands. Another adventure awaits this summer as I have never kayaked but am convinced it is the best way to experience these beautiful islands. The owners refer to the lodging as a cabin -but it is truly a home with all of the modern amenities! A huge deck was the perfect spot to sip on wine and watch birds, deer and we even saw a fox! The fireplace kept us cozy at night and honestly we had a hard time leaving to return to the hustle and bustle at home. I hope my review is helpful for people wanting privacy, a glimpse at nature and so many options for day trips to Bayfield, the Apostle Islands and even Duluth which I learned is less than an 1-1/2 hours away.

Given the holiday weekend, Labor Day, I knew rates would be higher and availability tight. There are no chain hotels in this area, so read your reviews and cross your fingers ;) I was able to get a better rate online via southwest hotels rather than via their website and calling them....even though it was a disappointment for almost $200/night later. The check in desk is only open until 10:00PM, thank goodness we arrived by 9:30PM. The man at the lobby desk was kind. The Inn is two levels with no elevator. We had a double queen room on the first floor. The place is dated, and gives you a motel vibe. It wasn't the cleanest room I've stayed in, but it was a place to rest after a long day of driving. The water pressure was weak in the shower as well, but the water was hot! There is a coffee maker and fridge in the room. The furniture was a little mismatched and the lamp on the nightstand didn't work. They do offer complementary coffee and cocoa in the lobby. There is bottled water for sale along with tshirts and sweatshirts-which were actually cute! The best thing about the place was the view in the morning, grab your coffee and take a stroll along the water!

It's attractive, the rooms have been updated and are quite comfortable. The bath towels are HUGE (not bath sheets but still larger than average) and seem very new. The Inn is right on the shore of Chequamegon Bay with an impressive nighttime view of Ashland. It's next to the Washburn Marina. It is a two story property but be aware that there is no elevator - which means guys like me have to request first floor. For my original reservation, I had been put on the second floor but the desk clerk switched me to first floor, no problem. Be warned, this property is stick built, which means, when the track team upstairs begins their morning warm-ups, you will hear every footfall and squeak in their floor. (I knocked my review down one star because of the squeaky and otherwise noisy ceiling in my room.) I was here in February, off season and the rates reflect that. I was here for a tour of the ice caves, and the vendor said there was a discount if I mentioned that. It turns out there's a better discount if you say you're here for ice fishing. (Nod, nod, wink, wink. The last time I went ice fishing, I came home with fifty pounds of ice!) In season, the rates probably go up. Washburn is a nice alternative to the expen$ive places in Bayfield, and you're about midway between Ashland and Bayfield. There's a lot to do here in the summer, and most lodging places take advantage of that so be prepared. It's more economical to visit off season but unless you're coming for family, ice fishing, ATV'ing or ice cave spelunking, Washburn is probably not an exciting place .
