sad but this place is temporary closed till 2019. to honor the first president of USA, the monument was built, and it is world tallest stone structure too. few places in dc are known to everyone like capitol building- Lincoln memorial-white house and this Washington monument. this is in same national mall zone, in one straight line with capitol and Lincoln memorial. its walking distance from the capitol. while coming to dc, you can see this monument from miles away. the best pic one can get is from Lincoln memorial where the reflection of monument you can see in the reflective pool. that is an awesome view, especially at sunset time. night view of this monument is amazing. read more

Doesn't look like there'd be much inside based on its size and narrowness, but the views are crazy good and there's a floor with all the unique history. This monument probably has some of the best park rangers of them all. They're always so knowledgeable and friendly! Definitely be online by 10am the day prior to get your tickets, or you won't be able to see this gem. The tickets are sold out so quick! read more

Apparently, if it wasn't closed for repairs.. you could go inside and up the monument. Seeing it in person, just from outside was amazing enough. You can see it from all over the National Mall, really. It was built in the 1800's and that in itself is cool. It's two colors because its was built in two phases and the marble came from different quarries. We rented bikes and rode around but I felt uncomfortable leaving the bikes to wander because WHAT IF! I wasn't aware or saw places to dock them and other people would just leave their rental bikes around.. someone could mistakenly take your bike or... I don't know. It was fun until we wanted to wander the monuments and had to leave them unattended. Also, I was not prepared to be bitten so much while out there. read more

Got to see this amazing monument up close and personal during our trip. It was super windy that day - we saw lots of pamphlets go flying, and even saw a stroller get turned over, but luckily the baby wasn't inside! You can see this monument from all around DC. I was able to grab a great picture of all the flags around the monument flying, with the Lincoln Memorial in the background. I found out while we were there that you could take rides to the top of the building, but they have limited tickets available each day, and you have to get there early to get them. Maybe next time! read more

The Washington Monument is such a great place to visit while exploring DC. Although it was closed for renovations on our trip, it's so massive and peaks up through lots of the DC area that from a distance it's easily able to be viewed. I wish we were able to get closer to it sans renovations because it truly is an iconic, breathtaking sight to behold in person. The historical monuments are all exciting to see but the washington monument itself is easily recognizable anywhere you go! read more

The tallest structure in the city, no building is allowed to be taller. Unfortunately for me, it was fenced off for repairs/upgrade to the elevator when I was there. I blame (Tom Holland) Spiderman. Anyway, we were in DC for the Fourth and it still served as a once in a lifetime backdrop for the firework show. The red eyes give it a spooky look at night. It is a spectacular centerpiece to the city and is a can't miss. Seriously, you can't miss it. For the history geeks: The actual centerpiece for the street grids is the capitol dome. This part of DC was designed for the President's house, Congressional house and a statue of Washington to be in the form of a right triangle. Who knows, there may have been some nefarious masonic/voodoo reasons. The ground where the monument was supposed to go up was too soft (ahem). So it was moved over and it stands at the position of attention a little to the right (east) of where it was supposed to go. A marker (Jefferson Pier) of where it was supposed to go is still there, go check it out to get your history nerd-on. Later, the Jefferson Memorial, of the man that had it laid out, is built on that line with the White House. read more

To quote Carly Simon, nobody does it better, makes me feel sad for the rest, nobody does it half as good as you, baby, you're the best! The Washington Monument is the best. Even shrouded in scaffolding and netting, it's still a beautiful icon, a beacon of freedom, liberty and justice. I love coming to look at it. It's very inspiring. Back in the day when I lived in DC, I went up in it and thought it was super cool, even if the windows at the top were super tiny. Whether you're on a tour with Rangers or just walking by, this is a beautiful monument. read more

Just like other American contemporary landmarks, the Washington Monument is amazing and fascinating to say the very least. It was the first iconic landmark I spotted from the air and from the ground. Situated at the center of the National Mall, it stands tall at 555 feet and was built to honour of our First President, George Washington. A closer look of the Monument is something everyone should experience. Simple architectural design, yet iconic. Neighbouring landmarks are the Lincoln Memorial, National WWII Memorial, and Korean War Memorial... just to name a few. Due to a temporary closure we are unable to go inside. Standing next to it and looking up sufficed. A must see when in DC. The Monument is closed right now, so our "visit" to the Monument consisted of looking at it from afar. So I'll definitely keep it on my list of things to do next time I visit (assuming it's open then). It was interesting to look at (I didn't know that it had remained unfinished for many years and that's why the stone changes 1/3 of the way up!), I just wish we could have gotten closer. read more

The Washington Monument is great to visit all year long. When it was initially built it stood a little over 555'. Each year because of the immense weight it is sinking into the ground. However all heavy buildings sink into the ground. The monument was made for the first president of the United States, George Washington. The monument is the tallest obelisk in the entire world. They made an obelisk in tribute to George Washington because he was a free mason and one of the their symbols in an obelisk. The monument is the second tallest structure in the world coming in a few inches under the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. The monument is the tallest free standing masonry structure in the entire world. I definitely recommend visiting the monument when you visit DC. If you are unable to visit in person there is a ton of information on line about it. read more

Yes, folks, I'm gonna write the review that makes you want to see this famous monument (forget about the other 40,000 or so...). Standing 555 feet tall (the obelisk is 500 feet tall & the pyramid shape on the top is another 55 feet), the first thing you notice when you see this is that it's 2 different colors. "Why?" you ask? Because the construction was started in 1848, but was stopped in 1854 for various reasons (lack of funds, the impending Civil War...stuff like that). When construction was resumed, they used a different source for the marble, so that's why there's a different color. The elevator dates back to the second phase construction, but the current one was installed in 2000. If you prefer, you can climb 900 stairs to the top (umm, no thanks). It was closed to the public for further restoration, but reopened in September 2019. It was the tallest structure in the world for only 1 year, when the Eiffel Tower surpassed it. Visiting the Monument is free, and it's open from 9AM until 5 PM (last tour starts at 4:30PM). You will need to make advance reservations & you'll be given a time for your tour. Most tourists opt to just take photos from the outside. It's kinda like visiting the Statue of Liberty--I can't say it's really worth the wait, but if you think it is: it is! read more

Washington Monument - Crowd but still an amazing view - Landmarks & Historical Buildings Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

George Washington rises above it all: Towering above the Nation's Capital at 585 feet tall, the Washington Monument is the tallest structure in the Nation's Capital. It is the tallest structure made of stone in the World. It is the tallest obelisk in the United States. If this wasn't legendary enough like the man it celebrates, at one time it was the tallest building in the World until the Eiffel Tower beat it in 1889. The Washington Monument stands in the National Mall to the south of the White House and west of the Capitol. The City's original intention was to locate the obelisk at the junction of a line reaching toward the White House and the other reaching toward the Capitol. Due to structuring issues of the ground, it was built a short distance away. We would walk directly south from the White House to spend time at the Washington Monument. I highly recommend seeing the Washington Monument on a walk including the White House, the Reflecting Pool, Lincoln Memorial, and the monuments along the shoreline of the Tidal Basin. On our walk we started off at the White House then walked directly south to the Washington Monument. Because the Washington Monument is the tallest building in Washington DC it is easy to find. There is no need for GPS. The Washington Monument is a point of interest on the National Mall, which is truly a linear park connecting the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol. Time spent hanging out by the Washington Monument is time spent outdoors in parkland. The white obelisk and green grass is an attractive color combination that creates spectacular photos. This is a prime picture taking spot. Surrounding the obelisk that reaches toward the clouds are fifty American flags (not individual state flags). You really get a sense that you are in the Nation's Capital celebrating the very first Chief Executive. It is a feeling that permeates the parkland around the Washington Monument. Owing to the foundation that supports this landmark, the ground is at a higher elevation. From this perspective the vistas of Washington DC are dynamite. When I looked to the north, I took in a panoramic view of parkland reaching to the South Lawn of the White House with a cityscape of federal buildings. When I looked to the left I saw the National Mall sloping toward the Lincoln Memorial interspersed with the Reflecting Pool, fountains, and trees. And when I looked to the east, I saw a linear carpet of green as bordered by Smithsonian buildings as the National Mall made its way to the Capitol. I am confident that George Washington would be fond of the Washington Monument. We enjoyed the Washington Monument so much that we returned to the scene at night. At night, the obelisk is all lit up and a fascinating spot to be in Washington DC when the stars and moon are up. The lighting illuminates the marble and stones where they shine brightly like the stars above. It was neat how the observation windows lit up making the obelisk look like a tower glowing in outer space. From this perspective, you get outstanding illuminated vistas of the White House, the Capitol, and Lincoln Memorial. The Washington Monument rises above it all. When you spend at least a few minutes at the Washington Monument taking in the obelisk and surrounding Washington DC vistas, you will rise above it all. read more

This famous tall monument is larger than life. It sits on a vast green field, and can be seen from northern Virginia as well as south Maryland. Walking here to a while, and we chanced upon a festival going on on the vast green field. It was some sort of cultural even, with music and food. We didn't stop there, as our priority was checking out all the monuments. The base of the Washington Monuments is surrounded by flag poles. The monument itself has an interior where people can take an elevator up to the observation deck. This was closed, however, as there were no more tickets available that day. A good tip: get to the monument early, around 8:00 AM, and get tickets before they're all gone. The sight by itself was amazing, so not being able to go inside was not a big deal. There were scores of people sightseeing as well, and a group of people partaking in a Romanian cultural event. In the distance, the World War 2 memorial and the Lincoln monument are visible. They are several hundred meters from this monument, so bring comfortable walking shoes. This is a must see when in DC, I highly recommend it. read more
