My love of libraries knows no bounds, but still this one was pretty spectacular…read more A few things I admired: 1) Located high above downtown Hood River on State Street, it gives you an expansive bird's eye view of the Columbia Gorge. On a rainy or windy day, that is Hood River's thing after all, I suggest you take a break from the elements here. 2) The building, which I dubbed Dracula's Castle, is old brick and stone architecture on the outside, but with all the modern conveniences inside. 3) The kids section is expansive and dominates the lower level. They really made it special with all sorts of special lighting (think magical grotto) and the space is configured well with play areas to really let their little minds wander and imagine all sorts of interesting places. Serious bonus points for the Reading Theatre with carpeted steps instead of chairs for the audience. 4) Participates in the Oregon Library Passport Program - http://www.librariesoforegon.org/node/30. So if you are like me and love to borrow books or videos when you travel, if your home library also participates, it is an easy process. 5) Location. Not just the views, but also located conveniently in downtown Hood River. Wander down the hill to read your book in the park on a sunny day and then grab a scoop of ice cream from Mike's. The staff member reading the story was enthusiastic & encouraged the kids to participate with hand gestures & songs. They got to do water color painting afterwards, too. The book checkout process was so simple thanks to the high end computer that just scans the books on its own when you set the stack on there. The staff was friendly as well when greeting us. We have made story time a regular event now :)

Schedules of kids activities, programming classes and other pleasantries were listed at the front desk. More than anything, I was surprised at the number of different sections to relax here. The children's area was bright and had plenty of area to read and be read to, in addition to a half a dozen computers. A number of study carousels are available for those wishing to get their study on, and all include plenty of outlets. Perhaps the coolest area they have here is the fireside reading spot - a few comfy chairs and a place for your coffee! More books that you can shake a stick at and a nice selection of DVDs for rentals. All in all, a lovely spot to read, study or just hang with the kiddos!

This is our local branch and we love it here…read more We participate in their monthly craft event called "Make Anything", where you can pick up a free kit and follow along virtually at home. They always host fun events that adults can participate in! We also take advantage of their board game collection! When you filter by their 3-D objects in their catalog, they have 100s of board games to borrow. You can only borrow 2 at a time but they have recent and interesting games.

As someone who struggles with chronic illness, I came here to do some studying so I can advocate for myself medically. I was able to gather the materials I needed and find a nice quiet spot with a beautiful view of the trees. Outside they had their pride flag flying high and that made me extremely happy to see that they are also very inclusive! The only downside was one child who was screaming on the computer for a good 10 minutes, but he eventually left. Other than that, I truly love the atmosphere here!

Staff is knowledgeable and easy to work with. Just a list of their monthly programs can take up to 8 pages. Sandy Library brings music, culture, and digital outreach to the community of Sandy in a thoughtful way. Every first Friday of the month they have a great event, Library Coffeehouse. Starbucks donates coffee, the Friends purchase light snacks, and there is a great band from 6-8.
