As libraries go, this is a pretty nice one, located next door to Firstenburg Community Center on 136th just north of Mill Plain, Cascade Park lives up to its name. Built into a wooded area, with a modernistic leaning, this library has a lot of things to like about it. As a fan of public libraries, I can safely say I've been into quite a few of them, from all over the place, and Cascade Park has the largest collection of computers I've ever seen in a library, all free to use of course. They even have Chromebooks, if that's your jam. And the computers are arranged throughout the facility, a group here, a group there, computers everywhere it seems. And to go with all those computers is a rather healthy WiFi system pumping out high numbers of broadband connection. Unfortunately, the WiFi is unsecured so I wouldn't recommend it unless you're using a VPN, it is a public library after all. The layout of the physical plant is quite pleasing with lots of nooks and corners to sit and read or work on a computer, with a vaulted ceiling that only makes the place seem that much larger. Plenty of comfy chairs spread around the building and good lighting where you need it. When it comes to the actual on-hand book selection, that's only average, but the staff more than make up for the somewhat small collection by being one of the most helpful staffs I've ever seen in a public library. If the book you're looking for exists, they will find it, somewhere. And these days there's so much more than just paper and ink books, ask the librarian about their audiobook collection or sign up for free movies and shows via Kanopy.com (only available to library card holders), and for those of you with kids, the storytelling events are quite wonderful. Parking is free, and if the library's lot is full, just park in the FCC lot a few steps away, there's always room there. As for the age-old public library problem of homeless folks taking up residence on your favourite chair or table, I've been many times now and haven't seen that issue very often in this location.

Wow, what a beautiful library on the inside...the outside of the building, not so much but it can't help it. At least the inside is amazing. I mean you can't go wrong with loads upon loads of books. It has only been open since December 2009 so it's still extremely clean. The library itself is one large open room with everything clearly marked by sections (still some people seemed extremely confused. Way to go folks). The are two reasons why Cascade Parks isn't getting five stars. 1. The parking is atrocious. It shares a lot with the Firstenburg Community Center which always seems to be crowded. Everything is pretty small so those of you with big trucks, be careful please. I really don't need to be hit in a parking lot... 2. I know libraries keep odd hours but, come on, this is a pretty central location so why does it have to be closed on Sundays -and- Mondays? Tues.-Thurs. it is open 9-8 while Fri.-Sat. it is open 9-6. Sorry kids, if you're needing the library for a school project you'll have a tough time doing it on the weekend. Try something different... The staff seems lovely. They were all smiles as you walk in. Behind the help desks are a lot of computers which were packed. Free internet = win apparently. There were at least six self check out stations which was one of my favorite parts. Who ever came up with the pad that can read up to four books at checkout time at once is a genius. Plus I love getting to scan my own card. I am easy to please. Thank you Cascade Park Community Library, you have pleased me.

They don't like children here. The environment was very hostile towards my kids. No kids bathrooms either.

There is an eating area on the main floor where you can snack while you read. The children's floor has lots of books and a big play area for kids. Lots of neat stuff on the every floors. Very clean and organized. I especially enjoyed the fifth and top floor. There is a terrace where you can sit and there is a garden area where you can look at the plants that are growing. Unfortunately because it was off season and in early September, so nothing was growing at the time. They even have a "Seed Library" where people donate their garden seeds to library. Readers can come up and see what was donated and take a packet of seeds to plant at home. Great idea to spread the wealth of seed planting. This library is within walking distance to restaurants and Regal Movie theatre. Great location for readers to stop by and borrow a book and just enjoy the reading materials they have chosen. I found this library to have many good amenities.

And an entire play area. Not slides and swings, but learning and creativity play area. They can go inside sculptures and spin the wheels to make things glow. So cool! I didn't get to check out too much of the actual library set up, but did notice you can check out Activity Bags, which are bags that have a theme and it looked like books, games, activities, surrounding certain themes for kids. Def will be coming back

My boys went there for activities, and the books we brought home were enough to last a week. I love it when we went there to vote, I was a member of the election board. My neighbor was doing that, and I asked her how she got in. She told me to fill my name down on a card & handed me one, and the following year, they have a supervisor that retired and I was instant supervisor until Mail-in Ballots got in my way! Dh went there to read the newspaper, since we stopped subscribing, and I did a lot of research on the net, while there . . . . can order books for delivery from other branches. Since it's so close from home, I sometimes go there to learn new tricks. I learned how to do the fabric Japanese flowers during one of their Asian week, and in return I am now helping raise money for the Japanese Tsunami AND teaching women from my church make them for our bazaar. How cool is that! We have a lot of Asians now in my neighborhood, so Vietnamese speaking have been added, and other Asian activities. I have a neighbor who I passed by when I go to the library, who have lived in the neighborhood after we moved in, who HAVE NOT been inside the library, not even once. . . . .only to vote. Well, guess what? She had missed so much . . . but last Monday, dh saw her there! It is not too late to enjoy what's out there, and we paid for that library's remodeling. Another improvement they did, was the bathroom. Not just anyone can go in to mess it up or plug the toilets. They are more lighted & can be seen (not hidden like a dark alley like before) who goes in & out so people can hear a child scream if they're in trouble. What I hate? I wish they don't keep updating books! Who cares if they're old. . . . . The olden days are gone, but books shouldn't have expiration dates. Go to the Book of Kells, do they replace books there?

There's a section of Best Sellers that current popular books are available for check out. I've checked out some epic reads without having to wait. I like browsing the shelves and seeing staff picks placed on placards next to the book on the shelf. I've read many books that I wouldn't have read otherwise from the recommendations. I've recently started checking audio books and books on Kindle through the Libby app. I love it! I love that they do different events. I've taken my grandkids to family friendly events. Last week I had to check out the current artwork being displayed. I was mesmerized by the Warrior Women Portraits by Danyel Rogers. I received an email that there was an artist reception being put on for her. Many of the subjects of her photographs were in the audience. The reception was nicely done. I hope to make many future events!

So many others have mentioned the books, DVDs, library of things, Kanopy subscription, events and…read moreother elements that make it worthwhile to hold a library card here (the donuts aren't bad, either). But I can think of three reason off of the top of their catalog to keep going here: 1. Flamer by Mike Curato 2. Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kulkin 3. Heartstopper, by Alice Oseman You don't have to travel very far from Brookwood Parkway to find people who want these books taken out of kids' hands or incinerated just because they're unwilling to have conversation with their own children or unable to cope with what those conversations might mean. You don't have to pretend that it's only the burden of far-flung portions of the state to deal with those who'd prefer to ban books than discuss their context or meaning. In the library's backyard, there are folks with a friendly smile on their face and a cup of coffee to sell you who'd have each of these books removed expeditiously for specious reasons while outright slurring the people depicted within the pages. Granted, they call a lot of these same good folks neighbors, clergy, employees, family, and "friends" while taking their labor, payment, and tithes, but I guess letting people reach their own conclusions about their stories is the step they won't take. Well, many thanks to the Hillsboro Public Library for offering these books to anyone willing to read them. A library is often a first step along anyone's journey of self discovery (someone in the comments figured out they wanted to make horror movies, and started that walk here), and offering them the freedom to do so is a foundational portion of a public library's existence. Instead of closing that road, more of the library's neighbors should come along for the trip.
