I'm still not sure how my boyfriend even found the Survivor's Den, since it was off the main drag…read moreand down an alley with only a small signboard on the street. At any rate, if you can harness the power of Google Maps to track down this store, it's a fascinating place to wander through... but you might not have much luck actually trying to purchase things. As you walk up, you'll see a large display of skulls, home decor, garden art, and other miscellany piled high on tables outside the store. It's a really random mix, but I guess the general theme is "country/Americana." Inside, there are a couple more rooms jam-packed with antique spice tins and bottles, knick-knacks, scented candles, paintings and sculpture, and who knows what else. It's so full of stuff (much of it fragile and small) that you have to be REALLY careful moving around; I was constantly in fear of my purse sweeping something tiny and expensive off a shelf. We stopped by on a weekend, and it seemed the husband was minding this store while the wife (who buys the inventory) was at another location. Nothing had price tags, which I find annoying and which usually discourages me from asking about an item I'd otherwise be interested in -- I hate having to run back and forth asking, "How much is this? And this? And this?" It didn't seem like they really wanted to sell things all that much, anyway; I eventually did ask the price of an item, but the husband didn't know and had to call his wife and describe it to her over the phone, who then gave a price that was WAY more than the item was worth because it was "gold from Alaska." (It was a chunk of pyrite.) He said they also have some consignment stuff, which I would think would have firm prices because they're set by the seller, so it might be easier to purchase those. The owner was very friendly and seemed happy to have someone to chat with while we browsed and admired various items. Overall, though, we got the feeling that it is more of a hobby or a collection, and things are priced to stay rather than move. They have tons of random and interesting stuff that is worth stopping by to admire -- just don't get your heart set on being able to buy it.

There's not a whole lot of thrifting in South Bend, but if you're interested in antique/vintage…read morestuff or just random curiosities, Gramma Deb's Attic is a unique place to check out, if only for the repurposed motel it's housed in. Located right on the river, the store has a great water view. It clearly used to be an old-fashioned motel, and the owner told us she operated it as a motel for a while before converting it to an antique store. Now, each door opens into a suite with different themes of collectibles and knick-knacks. I liked all the truly antique stuff: old medicine bottles, circa-1930s postcards, wooden glove boxes, and crystal doorknobs. Mixed in with it, though, is a lot of modern stuff that looks more like it belongs at a garage sale -- Avon tchotchkes, scented candles, and Pyrex dishes. However, it's crammed so full with everything jumbled together that you'll want to take your time looking over the shelves so you don't miss any treasures. The owner was friendly and it's an interesting place to poke around (plus there are lots of candy dishes around, since she's a grandma). The prices seemed a bit high, but then I'm always reluctant to haggle, so a more aggressive bargainer could probably score a better price. It's worth a visit if you're in South Bend.
