Your kid will want the instruction, which is how Carson ATA gets you in the door. But how they get you to stay, is that they offer more than just a class containing instruction and your typical respect-based techniques of martial arts on tap for the taking. They offer to the parents a system of keeping the kids interested in being better kids. For a short part of the 50 minute class, parents get to stand up and explain how the kids did on meeting a certain goal (perhabs to be more respectful or in whatever way to be better kids). In front of the entire group, the kids are cheered on by the dojo about whatever little thing was hard for the kid to do at home over the course of the week. These skills in motivating kids to respect their parents is incredible. Why? Because these skills are taught by the same dojos who teach your kid how to fight and how to protect the child against attackers, which is what the kid really wants. So for every future black belt in the making, you get a child that is primarily concerned with doing the best he can at home, for you, so he gets to come back and learn to spar and grapple and use the equipment. A smarter business model there has never been. My kids are already wanting to go back. And I have a super hard kid that hates everything, plus is incredibly shy. In fact, I was very defeated at first that my child didn't want to participate over the first 30 minutes. But by the end of class, with some very clever motivation from the dojo, all the kids welcomed my child (who was probably feeling very uncomfortable being un-wallflowered) and got her on the floor and eventually she was doing some moves with the others and having a good time. They really want to come back. I actually hope my children become black belts. I can see this really working out.

I have trained at approximately three other martial arts schools in the last several years and have never felt more at home and comfortable then I do working with Sensei Atkinson. His approach to teaching makes the students feel comfortable which is important, since some of the things that are taught, can and do take time to get right. I have trained at schools that are in business for the money, and the instructors teaching seemed to enjoy working the students with little to no regard for their abilities and or limitations. Oh, and people trying to choke you or break your arm while you do the same to them. So what makes this gym worthy of a review? I'll tell you, person I just invented to ask that question. Training at this gym will save you roughly 2 hours of your life because you won't have to spend it in your car driving to Reno. That's where the next closest gym where you can learn to choke someone that's trying to choke you. So basically if you are sitting at home alone, illegally downloading episodes of Empty Nest but you would like to meet some new friends and get a body that feels like marble covered in suede this is the place for you. Nothin beats the feeling of being in shape. Except heroin. But right after heroin, the exercise thing for sure. 5 stars. Don't go anywhere else.

Wonderful place and wonderful people…read more This place has it all. Two schools share this facility and work together wonderfully. I have been training here for several years and the quality of the instructors is exceptional. They instructors also bring in guests from time to time to expose us to even more. They have no egos and see value in learning from all arts. Sensei Bern is a great teacher. Humble, knowledgeable, and flexible with the schedule. He's always willing to do what it takes to help you grow as a student. A unique aspect of this dojo is the healing arts. Part of what is taught and performed is learning to heal what damage you may do to an opponent: A complete form of the arts. It's truly the example of using your martial arts only when necessary and undoing harm you do. I couldn't recommend this place more. It's a hidden treasure of the valley.
