Bad service with broken parts used for repairs. Staff refuses to address their mishap.

The first time I used them, I had had a terrible experience with another shop that left me thousands of dollars poorer and my boat had the original problem and more. Mayday Marine diagnosed several problems and fixed them for just a few hundred dollars. I later had a problem of my own making that required remote service, which they provide for a reasonable fee. Rather than being just parts changers, they are mechanics, and I experienced this on my last repair. I had even suggested a replacement, and they advised a cheaper repair. That's how they roll. I now have another repair I need, and I wouldn't think of using anybody else. This family is very easy to deal with, very professional, and very upstanding. I would pay more than any other shop would charge just to be able to deal with people like them.

I own a 2005 Searay. When my boat failed to start I thought it was the starter. After calling a…read morefew repair places, I called Mayday Marine and decided to take the boat to John for the starter repair. Much to my dismay the trouble was not with the starter however to access the starter, the entire engine needed to be removed. John informed me of this and I gave the go ahead. Once out, I was called to come in and see the condition of the engine, it was easy to see that it needed to be replaced after seizing up. During this meeting I was told a price of $8K to $8.5K. Then he also suggested considering a new Stroker engine but at an expense of about $15K. But I was told that he would need to make some calls and then would provide a written quote. After much discussion I was first inclined to go with the less expensive long block and was told he would need a deposit for all parts, I gave Mayday a check for $6200+ and was told it would not be cashed until parts were ordered. But I was still contemplating the more expensive Stoker engine and was waiting for a final quote on that before making a decision. I then went in and was shown a quote for the long block of $10K+ but was only verbally told that the Stroker would be approximately $15K. I told Mayday I needed time to think. I was getting nervous about the repair and decided I needed another quote, just to provide some piece of mind when spending so much. Once I started making some calls to other authorized mercruiser shops, I found that the prices were anywhere from $2K to $3.5K lower. I asked Mayday for a detailed quote of the Stroker engine, it consisted of an email stating the hours estimated, the price of the engine and a total. No break down of parts, work etc. I again asked and again did not receive details. I became very concerned that I would later be told that the quote did not include certain items and the end bill would be much higher. Eventually I decided to take my boat elsewhere. When I informed Mayday that I was picking up the boat I was shocked at the final bill. It was almost twice what other shops were quoting me for the work that had already been done, which essentially consisted of pulling the engine and opening it up. I did not tell Mayday about the other quotes. However when I picked up my boat I did ask for the written quote, Diane firmly refused my request. She stated that since I was picking up the boat, I didn't need it. She was very unfriendly although I tried to keep the transaction smooth and amicable. She had to write me a refund check so I was at their mercy. They had already cashed the check despite the fact that I had never given a go on the work. Although the funds due back to me were $5400K+ they would not allow me to hook up the boat until I had gone into the office and settled the account. As I was getting ready to leave, Diane came out and took photos stating she wanted to document the transaction. Once I arrived home I realized I had not received back all of my boat parts and ended up having to go back for them the following day. Again I was treated very poorly, bordering on rude. I would not recommend this business to anyone. In retrospect it should have been a big red flag when I could not get a written estimate. I don't know how they have stayed in business as long as they state. Apparently most people don't get second opinions, however I am glad I did. I am now getting the needed repairs done by a highly competent shop which came well recommended. If I could give Mayday ZERO stars I would.
