Actually, we didn't know about the museum here. We came to have lunch at the diner after visiting the the National Transport and Toy Museum next door. However, combining a meal here with a visit to either (or both) museums/collections makes for a great outing.
Restaurant:
+ Spacious and clean
+ Extremely friendly and helpful staff. I don't remember her name, but the person helping us was awesome.
+ Clean bathrooms (very important for the Mrs)
+ Books, toys and coloring pages and markers available to keep the kids busy and happy.
+ Kids menu
+ Delicious food. Although it says it's a "diner", the quality of the food here (as with all NZ eateries) is of a much higher quality than your typical diner/greasy spoon in the US. Our twins shared the pancakes off the Kids menu. Good sized portion of 3 medium sized pancakes topped with a bit of syrup and berry compote. The pancakes were much thicker (about three times thicker than a typical pancake at home) but still light and fluffy on the inside. We shared an omelet (cheese, mushrooms, spinach) with a thick slice of toasted ciabatta bread, as well as a chicken pie with salad and fries. The pie was great (flaky crust, tasty chunks of meat and gravy on the inside). The salad was a lightly dressed, field greens style (no wimpy ice berg lettuce and ranch dressing here). The fries were a bit over salted, however. Overall, a great meal. We were thinking of getting a banana split for dessert at first, but wound up being too full :-(
