Came here to see the SF Ballet performance of The Nutcracker and this venue is beautiful. You can tell it is so old, and has so much history. The details are everything. We sat in orchestra seating (second to last row, perfect middle section) and had great acoustics. It was a little far for seeing stage details, so maybe being binoculars. Overall, it was cool to have an eye level view of the whole stage. Bathroom lines can get long during intermission, but they move so fast. There are a ton of restrooms and line waiters don't realize it. No food inside the theatre, but drinks with lids are okay! Would love to come back here!

I got to see the Nutcracker ballet for the first time ever and it was spectacular! It was even better than I had expected. I'm going to try to attend every year. Wait until the very last minute to buy tickets and you can snag a deal on a variety of websites including ticket resellers. I attended a matinee performance, which was mostly families. Some dressed up, others were casual, but all were accepted. It's a beautiful venue, always lit up nicely at night. (The below nighttime pic is from a different evening than the Nutcracker ballet.)

What a stunning venue! I visited to watch the SF Ballet performance of The Nutcracker and was genuinely blown away by my entire experience. The exterior is simply majestic, with lots of white columns and huge posters. There were long security lines that moved quickly, and the lobby was packed with people. The entrance and lobby area were completely decked out for Christmas, featuring wreaths and a cute Christmas tree. I loved looking at the expansive arched ceiling, with gold detailing. There were quite a few floors, with stairs and elevators leading to each. I sat in the balcony area for the performance and had a decent view of the stage. There was so much seating. The entire performance area felt beautiful, with flowing curtains and a live orchestra. After the performance, we checked out the expansive gift shop on the second floor. The opera house is so grand, featuring a perfect stage for the talented performers.

I always enjoy going to the opera, but SF Opera's recent performance of The Monkey King was especially splendid. I appreciated the community events that took place before the performance. There was a market featuring themed snacks outside the opera house, while, inside there was dragon dancing. I also loved participating in the calligraphy activity at intermission. Staff were friendly and helpful and bathrooms were plentiful and clean. Can't wait to come back for another great performance!

Attended the Frankenstein Encore performance by the SF Ballet a few months ago at the War Memorial Opera House. Loved it! Great performances by all, and awesome stage setting with pyrotechnics that really light up the stage. Mesmerizing dances and storytelling that make you feel for each of the characters and their circumstances. Ticket prices can be inexpensive to expensive depending on date, time and location of seats. The War Memorial Opera House itself is grand and beautiful. Can't wait to come back and enjoy the next season's performances. All staff were helpful and polite. Located on Van Ness and Grove.

I am surprised I have not reviewed the Opera House yet. I am one of those people who judged folks going to the Opera when I was younger, and here I am...loving it. Perhaps it's the advent of subtitles at the Opera which has made the difference for a plebe like me. Stunning location/architecture, and I am always in awe when I come here. The folks who work here are consistently nice and courteous. When AI does everything that we can do and most jobs go away...performing in an Opera will still be standing.

My husband and I have a yearly tradition to attend the Nutcracker Ballet in December to celebrate Christmas. War Memorial never fails to deliver. It is a high quality performance. This year the sugar plum fairies were not in the show. Instead they had a different performance for that portion of the performance. Definitely not something I'd like to see again. They need to add the sugar plum fairy dancers back to the performance. We also always visit the shop after to buy a nutcracker to add to our collection. I recommend a box seat and order food and drinks to deliver to your box for the intermission. I also recommend purchasing parking in the garage when you buy your tickets.

This place was gorgeous from the outside. The security and ticket line moved rather quickly. Inside is gorgeous and the ceilings are spectacular. One thing I found rough was that thereare no bathrooms on the first floor. You must go down a floor to use the restrooms. If you are dressed up and in heels going up and down flights of steps is not really ideal. There is also a huge line for the ladies room. We got some champagne and snacks before the show and they were alright. After going back upstairs we needed help to find our seats and there were language barriers with the ushers but we figured it out. The theatre itself is gorgeous and kept fairly clean. We really enjoyed our time and look forward to more enriching ballets and performances.

Came back recently to see La Boheme! Beautiful venue, love the art for the title screen. It's always so unique and interesting to see who they choose as artists. Great opera, set design, and acoustics.

Standing ovation for the cast of The Monkey King.

Love being at the Opera House since I was a kid . Gorgeous old building that has over the years been renovated and maintained to its glorious beauty. Every part of the building is worth seeing & enjoying, from the lobby with its high ceiling with gold painted details, to the auditorium with all its grandeur. I've attended symphony concerts here before Davis Symphony Hall was built. I've attended many SF Ballet performances here as well as SF Operas. All shows are delightful & memorable in this iconic building. If you ever get the opportunity to watch a show here, it is well worth it for the experience and the memories.

This was my first time at the War Memorial Opera House, and I would definitely come back again. I actually sat in the farthest row on the highest floor, on the 4th floor in the balcony area because The Monkey King was a newly adapted play that was really popular in the city and even though it was really good, there was very limited seating. On the fourth floor, there were two screens that we could see, and you could still see the stage rather well, especially for tickets that only cost about $35. So I would definitely recommend coming back to this place. It's really nice and bougie area inside. Security is pretty streamlined, and in general, you can go in, show your ticket, and run up four flights of stairs if you desire or find the elevators nearby. Would definitely recommend coming back again. At night, it's a very well-lit area with really cute decor, especially in the holiday season. I would only caution any visitors to realize that at night, this is near the Civic Center area and it's near City Hall. Because of that, there are a lot of homeless nearby. I would definitely not recommend a girl walk alone around this area at night, even though it is very well lit, and there's a public library and the Asian Art Museum with nice decor. Be mindful of your surroundings at night, especially your bags. The Opera House itself is a beautiful place to be once you're inside.

Love love coming here to see some amazing performances. Just saw La Bohéme. It was fantastic!!!

Beautiful building to see the opera. Amazing architecture. We had great sight lines and the Opera House was amazing. Rest rooms will be a little tough of you are handicapped, and the access is not up to current code. Just incredible to look at the detail of the building and how well they have kept it up.

Do the concession stands or food venues have vegan options?

Yes, the Farmer's Market Picnic Box is available at all concessions stands. Also, there are vegan options on the Buffet in the Cafe at the Opera.

I had always wanted to see this classic story on stage so I jumped at the opportunity. It is a small theatre so chances of a sold out show is high; definitely purchase tickets early. It is a small theatre hidden within the Kensington hotel on the second floor. There is a small bar area on the main floor of the theatre. Bathrooms were nice and clean. The front row of the balcony are the best seats and offers a perfect view of the stage; you can see everything as well as have a clear view of the actors' faces and the emotions. I think any row beyond the accessible seats you might have some obstruction from heads and may need to lean forward a little to see what's happening. I'd love to see more shows here. M. Butterfly had an excellent cast. The play was moving and enhanced so much history, culture, politics, romance, drama, gender, and sexuality.

Fabulous cabaret-type show with performer Arianna. She's a true (veri) Italian from Milan who sang, danced and explained Italian culture as part of the entertainment. She has an amazing voice! She could have been a finalist at the San Remo Music Festival - the most famous singing festival in Italy. She fessed up saying she had been an Italian Mouseketeer! The venue has a bar/lounge to enjoy cocktails then a few steps down further is the theater. You need to be mobile since there are a lot of steps. Seating is first come-first serve. I have to admit that seating is quite tight. You are shoulder to shoulder with your neighbors. Get cozy folks. They typically have magic shows here! Ambiance - After getting your tickets from the ticket booth, you go down a sharp flight of stairs which dumps you out into a bar area with two large doors on both sides of the room. The room on the right-hand side is where they have stand-up comedy (Cheaper than Therapy), and the left hand side is where the Improv show takes place. You wait in the bar area until the doors open. Once you enter, there are a handful of rows of chairs (barstool style with backs) and it's general admission. It's a pretty cozy area, maybe fitting around 50 people or so if I had to guess. Before the show, one of the improv team members came around offering Oreos to guests. We did not partake, but if you like Oreos you're in for a treat. The show itself was great. There were four improv comedians and they took a bunch of crowd suggestions and tailor-made a show based around our suggestions. The show itself is about an hour and a half, but didn't feel like it was that long at all. When it ended, I was shocked that an hour and a half had passed already. Time truly does fly when you're having a great time! I would definitely return again as we had a blast and really enjoyed the quick wit the improv team had to offer. I would highly recommend checking them out!

Turns out that everyone had to stand in this will-call line to get physical tickets even though they were purchased online. We had to lock up our phones in a pouch for this specific event but it's so beautiful indoors as well. They had a bar area that many people enjoyed. Bathrooms are a bit crammed but nothing new to venues. It's a more intimate venue. It reminds me of a large college class room. Each seat seems like a great view, even last row. Demetri was able to engage with the audience in ways that aren't typically possible in a larger venue (like the Masonic). Note that the venue can be hard to find, especially if the event was advertised as being at the "Palace of Fine Arts." The Theater is around the corner, and there are very limited signs. Like many reviewers, we spent time wandering around trying to find the entrance. It is on the west side of the venue, not near the famous dome. If you're driving/Ubering, be sure to enter the destination as the Theater, and not just the Palace of Fine Arts, as the entrance are on opposite sides of the property. There is very limited food and drink offered, and you're not allowed to bring any food into the auditorium (covered drinks are allowed). This was a bit of an inconvenience for a show running 7-9pm right during dinner time. We were hoping for at least some popcorn for during the show. Bathrooms are small and awkwardly laid out, leading to long lines, confusing, and tight spaces. This is made worse by the fact that each row is ~50 seats across with the only aisles on the ends - this makes it very hard for anyone not seated on the very ends to leave during the show to go to the restroom. As a result, there was a massive rush to the restroom after the show and a 20 minute wait for the men's restroom (I shudder to think how long the women's line was.
