Fish and Chips off the Special Menu £5.95
Gemma R.

The specials board outside was what caught my attention. I've never really thought to rush to try Walrus, purely because there's a lot of other places that have caught my eye. The specials board displayed a small selection of dishes for £5.95 a bargain I said to myself. We got our window seat, ordered drinks and 2x Fish and Chips off the menu. It did take approximately 25 minutes to come which I thought was quite long as I'm not used to waiting that long in most places situated in the NQ. Having said that, it was worth the wait. Great price for a great plate of food. Perfect portion size for a lunch time meal. The tartare sauce was AMAZING! Only bad thing about the place, which wasn't so bad, was the staff could of been a bit more welcoming and helpful when it came to where to order food etc. As I am fairly new to MCR and most NQ bars/restaurant waiters coming to your table to welcome you i did find myself scratching my head a little!

Quite possibly the iciest cocktail ever! :')

Found ourselves in here after a wander through the northern quarter, and having been in some of the other venues that belong to the owners, thought it would be a pretty safe bet. The drinks are reasonably priced, but, as with so many places, you wouldn't be getting very much if you took the ice out, never the less, my cocktail was pretty tasty. We both went for exactly the same order of sliders, which is one of the joys and simultaneous disappointments to not have something else to try of a friend with similar tastes. Served in a typical hipster, plate free fashion, but good, and filling enough, which I know many often doubt of sliders, and perfectly seasoned herby skinny fries that always save my heart a dose of far more salt than I should be gobbling! It took a while to be noticed by the staff, at all points (getting there, ordering drinks, getting the bill, leaving, the works) so that's one of the reasons they've had a drop from four, as there shouldn't be a lack of attentiveness enough to raise a mildly passive aggressive "Thannnnks guyyyyys!!!" from my mate as we headed down the ramp :')

A venue seemingly designed as a substitute fix for those trying come off the psychedelic substances, Walrus is nothing if not an assault on the senses! Candy striped rubber floors, over-sized light fittings, hat wearing wildlife, neon fish-tanks and chairs that look like boiled eggs are just some of the jazzy design elements that make up this adults play pen. Word of advice- this is NOT the place to stage a hair-of-the-dog post clubbing chill out! Situated at the city centre end of the Northern Quarter however, it certainly IS the place to start off a fantastic night. The food is daring and the bar menu eclectic- a bento box washed down with an umbongo cocktail cannot possibly be the start of a dull evening!

This place is certainly a must when visiting the Northern Quarter for a few drinks. Unlike any other bar in Manchester, Walrus has a unique and uplifting decor a crazy mix of coloured walls and psychedelic drawings with white oriental furnishings. Walrus is a strange fusion of cocktail bar and a modern Asian fusion eatery. The Bento boxes here are amazing and only cost £5 Monday to Friday 12-5pm-absolute bargain if you ask me! If you want a relaxed atmosphere with great food and fab cocktails get yourself down to Walrus sharpish.

My suggestion was actually a hit. I did my indecisive alterego very proud. There are many quality club nights organised by the Lost and Found name and this was no exception. Dance off, being £1 entry, sold it for me. Doubles for £3, a range of sambucas £1.50? Messy. Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. Another great Northern Quarter location that needs to become a regular thing for me.

The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

Not all books should be judged by their covers though, and this is especially true for Mint Lounge. You'll often find a queue outside Mint Lounge on the weekends, revellers eagerly anticipating a night of soul, funk, jazz and electric disco. There's a couple of bar rooms and a main dance floor which gives off an underground vibe. They also have live bands playing here and the entry prices are reasonable - from £4-7 depending on the night and how early you arrive. Expect a mix of the glamorous, fun loving, music loving cool kids in this place. Those who I seem to be able to always knock back a bit of random conversation with. The two club nights are Clique on a Friday and Funkademia on a Saturday both come recommended. Clique has been described as "Manchester's 21st Century disotheque playing alternative dance, electropop and digital disco" and has been voted Manchester's best club night many a times by the MEN. Funkademia, as you can probably guess, is more about the soul, funk and grooves. Mint Lounge has been accredited by Mix Mag as one of the COUNTRY's top ten clubs (2007). Not even just in Manchester. I'm not sure about that, for purely the bathroom situation. I'm just not a fan of checking out my shine in front of the bloke I had my eye on, or coming out of a loo along with a trail of toilet paper to find a mass of men and women trying not to smirk at me. It's bad enough in the girl's only toilets. I quickly get over this slight glitch and frequent the place more often than any other of Manchester's offerings I must admit. Watch out for special nights and guest djs, Hot Chip recently made an appearance, was tres bon to say the least.

Five years ago, passing somebody in the street wearing white earbuds would elicit a knowing nod although strangers to each other, iPod owners considered themselves a clique, a cabal of cool... knowledge of Corridor's existence and location is spreading, usually by word of mouth and pretty soon, like the iPod it will ingratiate itself to the masses but thanks to the simplicity of the door policy (if you can find it, you can come in) and the focus on great drinks and service. Corridor will be cool for many years to come." Honestly. Anyone reading that with at least a trace of a rudimentary brain-cell should be wanting to hunt the place down and level it with as many explosives and bulldozers as possible. Stepping inside this hell-hole is when the suffering really begins. Red-lights adorn the area, complete with Curiosity Killed The Cat's 'Greatest Hits' being churned out of the in-house PA at ear-bleeding volume, leaving patrons to slink cod-disaffectedly on the red sofas, trying to read each other's lips on the off-chance anyone might say something of even the slightest significance. If they enjoy being here, then it is a safe bet that they're saying nothing interesting at all, leaving everyone else to slump in their chairs wishing someone would come and give them a lethal injection to end the unrelenting misery of this irritating hipster-gland. I managed to find myself faced with an achingly wacky bar-staff, all dressed in lab-coats. One of them fancied himself as something of a comedian. In reality, he was the flesh and bones equivalent of a novelty tie. Alas, no law has been passed where you can force people like him face-first through paper-shredders. To the right of the bar was a 'hilarious' chalk-board with formulas and equations on for patrons to work out. You'd be wrong in thinking that people ignore it as three dunderheads gamely stood by trying to work out whatever pointless equation it was, presumably in the name of a free drink. On top of this, the prices on the bar were extortionate and there was nothing on tap. Anyone who actually pays to buy a bottle of Bud should be thrashed to within an inch of their lives. I got a dark rum concoction and, to be quite frank, it was dismal. Almost apologetically, a fat man in a lab coat was sent around the venue to serve up experimental booze-treats. That means a big spoon with vodka jelly on and some cream that tasted like vermouth. As interesting as it sounded, the screwed up faces belied the polite approval it brought as the fat man revelled in the only attention he'd ever got in his life from absolutely anyone. One good thing about Corridor is that the man who served me my drink was so thick that he gave me a tenner instead of a fiver in my change. I saw that as compensation for having to endure a hideous, grotesque place that had the soulless bon homie of a wine-bar in a crap '80s American sitcom. Thanks to all of the above, this place will no doubt be a runaway success to yapping fools who buy into a supposed exclusivity and irony. Kill it.

I came in here for the first time on a Saturday night on Valentine's Day and it was packed with people so you could barely move...everyone drunk and bumping into each other, pretty difficult to get a drink at the bar but good for dancing. Second time was a Saturday night but earlier in the evening about 9pm so could actually get a seat at a table and chill, much more pleasant. Cocktails are good and the bartender was good at making them.
