Welp, we are at it again. As a military family we are always having to "start over" when we move…read morefrom base to base. We are always having to find a new eye doctor, dentist, orthodontist ect. This was on the list, finishing a new eye doctor. I did research on Yelp mostly then a small amount on Google and Facebook. There were so many great reviews for Dr. Wallace-Davis and her practice. I called and made an appointment with ease. I was able to get in with myself and two kiddos a few weeks after the call. Their practice is operating great. They are taking all the precautions and then some in regards to covid. They take your temperature before arriving, space people out, disinfect between patients, wear masks, provide sanitizer and so much more. I felt very comfortable. We all did great at the appointment and we all picked out new glasses. Picking out glasses was nice. I always hate that process because I sometimes feel like people do not want to take the time to help customers pick put their glasses. To me it's important and I want someone who will be patient and help. They took time to help all three of us out and did not push us to move faster. I had to see a retina specialist. The doctor was extremely helpful with that process. She was able to get those documents over even when we keep hitting snags here and there trying to get the documents over to base. I sometimes wish that process was easier for all parties. But, I have just learned to keep patient with it. When our glasses arrived they did well with the fitting. Overall we enjoyed this location and are now forever patients... or until we move again. Haha.

That causes respiratory problems, so I said I can get my face shield. I got my shield and they said it has to be a mask. I told them the cec mandate says face shields are also ok. They said yes. That is the guidance, but we need it over your nose. If there is a viral load. It comes from your mouth. I did not have to cover my nose at all. Thats for me. It was annoying and overkill. My uncovered nose does not spread anything. So, whatever.

I have a very busy schedule and these people gave me the impression that they didn't care or respect my time. lord only knows how much longer I would have waited if I didn't get up and walk out. what really bugs me is that they sent me 3 reminders about my appointment and time and then said in their text and emails that there is a no cancellation policy and if I cancel theirs a 50 dollar fee. I talked to the receptionist when I left and explained that I was selling one of my houses and the closing was scheduled for 1:30 in norfolk so I had to leave. Let's just say she wasn't real happy and until this day they haven't followed up with me about my eye that was inquired while driving my tractor. So I think their actions only prove they don't give a shit about their patients. No problem I scheduled with another optometrist in Norfolk and was seen the same day and on time. One other issue how professional is it that they put a sign in the restroom that says if you sprinkle when you tinkle wipe the seat. I strongly suggest that you DO NOT use these people.

I've gone there for 3 years. Don't enjoy my first experience but it wasn't the worst and it seemed…read moreeasier to keep going back than to find a new eye dr. That was my first mistake. There are several things that have happened but here are the things just from my last visit. I go in and do all my tests. She comes and says he eyes have gotten slightly worse, with one eye being worse than the other. My eyes have always been equal so it was disappointing but whatever. I put the new contacts in and everything is messed up. I can barely see. I tell her that and she gave me a new contact that is the same as my other eye (so both were the exact same) and I could see perfect. Somehow they messed up and tried telling me one eye was worse than the other. And some could say well you're the one doing the test and answering the questions ... Ive done these eye exams since I was 9 (currently 22) and I've never had something like that happen. When im finally done with the appointment the lady is getting me ready to go to the desk to order my contacts. She says to me "the guy up front is a talker so I'm trying to stall before bringing you up" well come on now. I've already been here for an hour and I want to leave. Finally she just gives me my paperwork and says she's not gonna come with because she doesn't want to get stuck up there. So I go up and yeah this guy is a talker. Talking about everything but his eyes. I stood there waiting behind him for at LEAST 5 minutes. Heaven forbid they nicely mention there's somebody waiting behind him. I understand wanting to be polite and let him talk but he wasn't talking anything about his eyes, it was about his wife and plenty of other things. I finally get to the desk to order my contacts and they give me the option of delivery. I took it because it would save me a trip from going to the mall. A couple weeks later I still dont have my contacts so I give them a call. They tell me they were delivered a week ago. Well I never got any type of notification and I never got them either way. They tell me there's nothing they can do and that I have to contact ups to put in a claim. I DIDNT EVEN GET A UPS NUMBER! They never provided anything for me. They finally give me the number and I go to put in a claim. UPS comes back and says they can't do anything so I need to go through the seller. So I call LensCrafters back and they say there's nothing they can do and to contact Johnson and Johnson who officially sell the contacts. So I do. They tell me there's nothing they can do because the seller is LensCrafters. After constantly going back and forth with them LensCrafters finally agrees to resend the contacts. Absolutely ridiculous. Dont bother going there.

She asked a few questions and finally said she would be there at the appointed hour. Dr. Spellman had just told her that the small bruise under her right eye that he had scraped to biopsy had shown squamous cells, a potential skin cancer. He wanted to see her that day for another look and additional skin removal for more testing. She asked me to go with her to his office at nearby Hampton Roads Eye Associates on Warwick Boulevard to keep her company and help her listen to what was said. I took it all in and was impressed both with her strength and total alertness and the doc's direct sincerity and careful delivery of difficult information. Nothing final before the new lab work was completed, and it was clear that he was just being careful with his patient even before he could draw any conclusions. Spellman was at the top of his game and his professionalism and humanity set the right tone and told her by his manner that in all likelihood this would not be a big deal, but couldn't wait. We walked out into that chilly Newport News winter afternoon, knowing she was being very well cared for, and able to enjoy the rest of the day. Five Hippocratic Stars for Dr. Spellman and his practice.

I appreciate that they pay careful attention to your insurance benefits - which can fluctuate from year to year/plan to plan. As another bonus, they have a nice little eye glasses store attached so you can one-stop shop if you'd like (I actually ended up going to Lens Crafters for a wider selection, but if you're not picky, you might find something there you like!). I also have appreciated that they have not pushed unnecessary procedures on me -- a previous eye doctor was insistent I needed lasik, and when I asked about my astigmatism, he dismissed it. The doctors here were very careful about laying out pros and cons of the procedure and actually recommended against it given the cost/benefit ratio I'd face with the type of problem I have in the one eye. Overall, I would recommend them to any new friend or colleague in the area looking for an eye doctor.
