[The cemetery is at 819 9th St, Huntsville, TX 77320 near Mance Park Middle School. I've asked Yelp…read moreto fix it and they have not.] We mostly stopped here to pay our respects to Sam Houston, the first President of the Republic of Texas and later its first governor. But there are so many other historical figures laid to rest here that we had to wander. The historical marker gives some context. "This cemetery existed as early as 1846, for three graves were placed here that year. Pleasant Gray, Huntsville's founder, deeded in 1847 a 1,600-square foot plot at this site. The original tract has been greatly enlarged by other donations from local citizens. Numerous graves bear the death date 1867, when a yellow-fever epidemic swept the county. Among the many famous persons buried here are General Sam Houston; Henderson King Yoakum, author of the first comprehensive history of Texas; state congressmen; and pioneer families." It is marker number 8467 and it was erected in 1976 by the Texas Historical Commission. Beneath a large obelisk, Henderson Yoakum who was a US Military Academy graduate and Texas historian. Next to Sam Houston, his wife Margaret Moffette Lea Houston. Anthony Martin Branch, a friend of Sam Houston who served in the Texas state legislature and the Congress of the Confederacy. General John Slater Besser who was a brigadier general, legislator and judge before moving his family to Texas in 1842 and here held a number of public offices before and after the Civil War. There is also a state marker detailing the history of the Huntsville Yellow Fever epidemic of 1867 which killed as many as 10 percent of the residents of the city. The cemetery is quite…read morelarge, it runs along 9th street and you can enter through the gate and park inside; the curb along 9th is painted yellow so I think you can not park there. Sam Houston's grave site is on the SE corner of 9th and Avenue I. The cemetery is quite large and has a lot of other prominent Texans buried there with many historical markers. I would have to say that while General Houston's monument is quite large and prolific there weren't a lot of others like that or even many statues. Most markers were simple headstones. The cemetery is very peaceful as it's just neighborhoods around it. Wear comfortable shoes for walking as their are lots of tree roots and hard surfaces as you walk about.

This has gone on way longer than a simple phone call should. Please call the concerned family member immediately. NOT ONE instruction I requested was followed...from my mother's presentation, to the viewing, to the music at the graveside service. 1. I provided a photo of how she wore her hair combed and close to her head in layers and specifically said she did not tease it and fluff it out. They teased it and fluffed it out and gave her helmet hair. 2. I asked that only the immediate family be allowed into the viewing and the coffin stay closed until we had our time with my mother. When we arrived the viewing room had people in it and the coffin was open. A few people commented on her hair. 3. None of the music I provided was played at the graveside. Instead different tracks were played including one that my mom hated - which I had commented on in the arrangements meeting. It's unbelievable how bad their service was...almost like they deliberately sabotaged her funeral. They seem like the only funeral home in that area so if you are forced to use them I would micromanage make sure they can actually do what they are hired to do. This experience is going to matter. It's is going to stay with you. If you can go anywhere else, you should.
