The owners are very friendly and chatty, while the local moms cook in the open kitchen. While you wait for your food, they even invite you to visit their art gallery, vintage museum collection, and groovy glass observatory on the rooftop. 35kr pear cider...delicious, and the cheapest alcohol you'll find in a Norwegian restaurant. 50kr Troll soup...the wife liked this more than I did, but it was still good. 50kr Fish soup...just lovely. 150kr meatballs...delicious! 180kr Wild Game dinner plate...can't decide between Rudolf the Reindeer or Moose McCullly? How about both! 215kr Reindeer Stew...sorry Rudolf, you were quite delicious though! Hopefully Santa can find is way without you. This hearty dish tastes similar to Beef and Guiness stew. A bit pricey though. 55kr World's Best cake...not sure if I would call it "the best", but it was quite delicious! 45kr Apple Cake...just lovely, and I liked it more than the World's Best cake. Despite the 3 restaurants to choose from in little Balestrand, we loved it so much that we ate dinner here again our second night. (Note: At time of this review, the US dollar was up 50% against the Norway kroner...$1 = 7.5kr vs $1 = 5kr just a couple years ago)

My family and I visited Balestrand and had dinner here. When we walked in the man in the kitchen…read moresaid that it would be a bit of a wait, so my uncle replied, "Do you know how long?" The man then said rudely, "Well how long is a piece of string?" We decided to stay and were given a table (in our own room because we were a large group) by a very nice lady. Later an older lady showed us upstairs to a very cool observatory, she also told us stories and sang us a song. It was unusual fun in the best way, and she is why I changed my 3 stars to 4. About the food: I had the Reindeer Sausages with some yummy vegetables. For desert I tired the 'White Lady,' which they only make if they have time. It had a load of whip cream and sugar!

The portion could be considered 'personal' but a little larger than your standard personal pie! Cost: The prices were a little steep in my opinion, however, as a traveler I do know Norway is considered more expensive and so taking that into account, I want to say that the price here was average. Environment: The theme here encompassed an 'Italian' theme- absolutely loved the olive trees that were used to decorate the restaurant. It had a very classic/cozy vibe and made the experience that much better! Service: Absolutely A+! I just want to say that the service and hospitality they provided for my boyfriend and I was amazing! We were traveling late into the night and decided to quickly stop by to grab some warm food/bite to eat, however, we were misinformed that the restaurant would be opened until 12 because upon or arrival around 10PM, the restaurant was closing down. We quickly asked if the kitchen was open and to our surprise, even though our waiter told us the kitchen was cleaning up, he actually went out of his way to look into seeing if they can whip us up some pizza quickly! We were absolutely so grateful because we were starving after a long day of driving/traveling! Uniqueness: The environment and service that this place provides would be the unique aspect of this restaurant! The decorations were absolutely beautiful and I would love to come back here if I were to ever come by the area when visiting Norway again!

Great pastas (veggie and Diablo's), good service, great upstairs deck view for seating.read more

"A neighboring clan went on the attack, And stole all the giant coco-yams from the barn out back."…read more Coco-Yam Song, Mountain Goats In a hamlet where the ratio of goats to people is 5:1, you are more likely to find grazing grounds than habitats for human grazing. But no need to get bucky! You won't have to get down on all fours and forage for your fiber along the mountainsides, unless that's what floats your goat. Instead, herd yourself to the Underdal Fjordkafe to chew the cud and ruminate over your travel plans while waiting for the return ferry to Flam. The café has the most unbelievable views one could dream up from the seating area on the deck as it faces the fjords, mountains, and falls. You won't likely see any goats sitting at the tables around you, but you never know...you just might meet a Billy! One of the café's specialties is reindeer meatballs (apologies to Dasher and Dancer), but we could only salivate over others' plates as the cafe had just closed for dinner by the time we arrived. Baaaaad timing on our parts, but luckily their ice cream stand was still open, along with refreshments for sale. With mini ice cream cups in hand and grumbling stomachs, we hungrily asked those at the neighboring table if their meatballs tasted good. They answered, "Totes ma goats!" There is a bathroom way in the back through the attached Eldhuset Museum...we were told we would be on the right trail when we passed the giant goat poster. This goat must have the right stuff that separates the sheep from the goats to be picked out of 500 as the poster boy! Right next to the café is the Underdal Brygge, where you alert the ferry to stop by turning on a flashing yellow light. Don't wait until the last pickup time if you can help it, because the ferry never came for the last call. Luckily the café has wifi, albeit quite spotty, so that we could get a hold of a taxi service to take us back to Flam. 4 hooves in the air for the view alone (5 if I had a fifth), a "meh-eh-eh" for the ice cream, and one head ram for our late arrival. "I ain't got no mouthful, I ain't got no tail." Night Goat, Melvins
