However as this place is so huge you'll probably still find what you are looking for. Since I've lived in Oxford I've come here about a dozen or so times. We tend to try and stick to mid evening as the crowds die down a bit and they are not quite into their horrible restocking mode. Generally you can find fresh products and a wide selection of near everything (do not come to this Tescos if you are looking for home goods/ electronics/ etc). The prices as it is Tescos are decent. The staff are generally friendly as long as you're not getting the end of shift crowd. PROS: Large selection Good quantity of stock Price CONS: Gets ultra busy Leftover stock can be of bad quality Other side of the ring road.

It's got a huge range of items, although no adult clothing (other than underwear) or much in the way of electronics/media/toys, unlike even bigger stores. For groceries, though, it's got a lot to offer. Fruit and veg are of good quality and usually well-stocked. The deli and fresh fish counters offer a lot of choice, and they even have a large 'Polish food' section. They have two 'car trolleys' which amuse small (and big) kids greatly, and make the shopping trip easier with children who are too big for the trolley seats but too small to walk all the way around without whining. Staff are friendly and helpful, and offers on food are good value.

For instance the meat is of a much higher grade and mostly free range along with the eggs and large amounts in the dairy section. There is also a great wine selection with ones starting around £5 and ones a lot more expensive for the wine connoisseurs! The desserts are well worth a look also.

Great store but an increasing reliance on robot checkouts makes this 3 not 5 star. Last week there…read morewere only 3-4 staffed checkouts with 5-deep queues, whilst one member of staff was looking after about 10 auto tills, and you wouldn't believe how inefficient us customers are at scanning items, never mind the "unrecognised item in bagging area" problem! If Asda don't sort this out (one store that moved exclusively to robot checkouts had to roll back because of customer backlash) I'll be taking my shopping business elsewhere, but other than that this store is just the right size, not too big, and it's clean and easy to find your way round. And it's cheap!!
The value of some items here is excellent - their big boxes of own-brand nappies, for instance, are…read morewell worth the visit - but the store is often messy, disorganised, and I've never had an entirely positive experience there. I find it hard to locate items on occasion, and staff have not always been as helpful as they could be. The selection of fruit and veg can be a bit lacking, and I've had some issues with display dates on their meat more than once - grey mince on display, for instance. Not impressed enough to go out of my way to shop there.
This is the smaller of the two Sainsbury's stores in central Oxford. Being a little bit more…read morecentral than the Westgate store, and with longer opening hours, it is naturally busier. The range of products is not as good as that in the Westgate and the prices are higher - a tub of houmous might be 5p more expensive here. It's not the place to do your weekly shop, but is convenient for little things that you might have forgotten to buy. Queues are long but fast moving at peak times. One thing that does put me off is that most of the fresh fruit and veg is pre-packaged, which means that a) you can't pick out exactly what you want, and b) you can't have smaller amounts than are in the bags.
Sainsbury's Local has a fairly good range of foods, with all the essentials and is usually…read morewell-stocked despite its popularity. It's quite hard to get into through the flow of pedestrians and queues for the bus on Magdalen Street, but it's well worth it. There are no surprises, and it's not really the height of luxury, but there's a good selection of fruit juices and a section of bakery goods and lunch time snacks/meals. Because it's only Sainsbury's Local, as opposed to the main shop, you don't really get the good Sainsbury's Basics deals or the more unusual foods, but there's usually a suitable alternative available. The queue often snakes around the shop and is very offputting, but it moves surprisingly quickly; they've got a very efficient system going, so don't be put off because of that. The most frustrating thing is trying to fit everything into a bag on the tiny counter, as the shop assistants work very quickly! Some are friendly, some aren't so, but you'll get your food for a reasonable price, so it doesn't really matter.

An eagerly anticipated recent addition to Headington, replacing the old Somerfield supermarket…read more Inside it hasn't changed a lot and it's not a huge store but there's a selection of the usual Waitrose goodies including fish and meat counters as well as a bakery. There's a public carpark right next door (rumour has it that Waitrose tried hard to buy some of the carpark from the council but were refused) and most of the Headigton buses stop fairly nearby.
It was interesting visiting an English grocery store. First of all this particular store was…read moresmaller than the ones in the United States. Also, English grocery stores aren't laid out the same. For example cookies might be in multiple locations rather than one designated "cookie aisle." Also it was interesting because you had to pay for a shopping cart. They did have a limited number of hand baskets. If they ran out of hand baskets, people would use the bags they brought and add there items into the bags. Then remove them when they got to the counter. It was nice because there weren't long lines, and they had a lot more self-serve kiosks than my local American grocery store.
I'm not quite sure how to review this place. "3.5 stars" feels like the rating I want but since…read morethat's not an option, I'll bump it up to 4 stars. The location to surrounding area is amazing. The family and I were vacationing in South Kensington and this store was ideally located. It's a grocery store that has all the essentials... and more. And by "more", I mean seemingly random stuff like an aisle of non-branded shirts... and a convenience station which apparently provides shoe repair? Item selection for things (particularly vegetables and fruits) seems a little sparse. But admittedly I'm a tourist so perhaps that's expected for the area, climate, and time of year. Checkout is slightly disorganized (again, probably a "tourist ignorance" thing). Recyclable bags are available for pickup on a rail while walking through self-checkout. There's an automated gate that requires a receipt barcode to be scanned before exit is permitted. Ultimately I think this is a store that's 90% grocery store and 10% variety store. Nothing wrong with that but it was just a little surprising.

I had visited several locations while in London and they are all laid out roughly the same, making it easy to find what you need. They are slightly cheaper than posh smaller markets, but it is a standard chain grocery store, so quality is a little less for meat, fruit, veggies, etc. There are quite a few around London and its outskirts, so never had an issue while visiting, which is great. All and all, I overall was quite happy with my visits.
