They get them for you the next day, and I can order in advance over the Internet and collect them and pay at the shop. They have a loyalty scheme, so you can collect stickers in exchange for a voucher which you can use at Bookends or at Bookcase (their sister shop which sells second hand books and classical music CDs).

Once you go inside you will find lots of books about Carlisle and the local area as well as books that have just been published too. There is a wonderful children's section that has lots of different and discounted books to choose from. They have a great children's section too. They also sell calendars and notelets and address books and other things that make ideal presents for those people who are sometimes hard to buy for. This floor is just the tip of the iceburg. Downstairs there are three more rooms crammed with books. You could spend ages just browsing around. the staff are very knowledgeable and very helpful. They are also good at stepping back and letting you look without feeling pressured into buying. I always come here for my books as I feel it is important to support your local independent book shop.

They stock a real range of books, the staff are very knowledgeable and it's a lovely space in which to browse and discover worlds of fiction and non-fiction, both! They have a great children's section (including reads for young adults) and you can get cards, maps, poetry and Reviews of Books magazines, diaries and notebooks, and copies of Reforesting Scotland too. They specialise in Literature, Art and the Environment, but they have sections of new fiction, classics (Everyman editions), cookery, gardening and craft, poetry, Scottish lit., second-hand and art and architecture. If they don't have what you're looking for they can order the book for you free of charge, and if you don't know what you're looking for, they can advise. Exhibitions of art grace the walls (usually showcasing talented local contemporary artists), and there's a strong following of the shop amongst Borders locals.

Combination bookstore and café but with excellence in both. What a delight this was. I wish I had been staying in the area instead of merely passing through. This could become a local haunt, a fascination, an enchantment. It was charming. Our lunch was splendid, a surprise for hikers who take what comes but are serious foodies too. Any vacant tables was littered with previous customers empty dishes etc. No staff in sight to clear away. The chain really needs to consider how they improve on this. Books Books Books, Now this isn't the biggest book shop in…read morethe world but it is one of the best small book shops. Hidden away in the little down of Biggar this is pretty much the highlight of the town. Although there are a few nice little craft shops nothing compares to the hours that could be lost in here. The staff are amazing they will help you find a book if you don't quite know what you are looking for. They will sit you down with a cup of coffee to read a little and make sure the book is for you.

From a fireplace to armchairs to a great children's section with a cute little table and brightly coloured decorations. It might be small but their range of books is fantastic and the staff are friendly, approachable and keen to help. I visited looking for a specific title and unfortunately they didn't have it in stock. Not to worry they ordered it in and it was ready to collect the next day - I'd have paid how much for that with Amazon??? Its no surprise that they were the 2013 winner of the Independent Bookseller of the Year for Scotland.
