Sure, Germany has the book boys, the Bitburgers, the Beck's, the Krombacher's, but often overlooked is the beer being brewed right in your backyard at good, quality breweries. Vulkan is a great example of one of these smaller breweries. You step in and are immediately greeted by a large dining hall with long tables and bustling activity. Maybe this is common in Germany, but coming from the States this sort of communal dining and social energy is more the exception than the rule. The feeling here at Vulkan though is you've walked into a place that people meet, eat, and drink together. The menu was traditional enough German bar food, they had a good selection of specials, all focused on chanterelle mushrooms. I went with the spatzle, served with green beans, leeks, and topped with a fried egg. The dish wasn't very flavorful, but it's spatzle so what are you expecting, but it was warming and comforting with a good mix of veggies thrown in for good measure. The beer was really good, I tried the dobblebock while there but ended up taking a couple different bottles home and thought their weizen was the best choice. Really enjoyed this place, we were going to go on a tour but unfortunately it's only offered in German and the cost to bring out an interpreter would have been another 50 euros, the video though of the space looked awesome and I might have considered the tour even in German if it worked out with my timing a little better. read more
