I love used bookstores. There's something about the smell of them that I like. Voltaire and Rousseau is the type of place where it looks like old books go to die. There are PILES of them everywhere. It's not so bad if you're not looking for anything in particular; you could easily scootch around in there for hours just digging under stacks and piles and behind other books on the shelf. I love it. I wondered, when I walked in, how the owner managed to get himself to the desk in the corner. It looked like he was completely blocked in by books. And how, I wondered, do I get to that book up there? Just ask, really. The owner is a really lovely man, and it's clear he takes great pride in his shop. I don't think he'd be quite as happy if all the books where layed out alphabetically and easy to reach. I think it would lose most of its charm that way. One great thing about this place is that it's relatively cheap, and was a favourite haunt for my Uni days when I was searching for a cheap copy of a book for literature class. Dig? Yes, to save that extra £1.50, dig. In the front room as you enter, you'll find the first really crammed room full of books, however, they are all £1 or less. I found a few in there that I wouldn't mind taking home with me, including a full-sheet atlas. I wouldn't even guess what it goes for new, but for £1, I can totally get on board! It's a great way to spend your free Saturday afternoon, rain or shine. And if you like the idea of finding a treasure amongst an archeological dig, then this is your place. Plus, you never know. You might find something rare, maybe a first edition or something signed by the author in there. You never know.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Voltaire and Rousseau house every book under the sun! It's a real book store - not glossy (mostly second hand), not overpriced, not organised at all, although the guy who owns it seems to be like a homing pigeon when it comes to locating his stock. Books act as walls in here - they are spilling out the doors even as you walk in. You could build a house (or a FORTRESS!) out of how many books are in this place. So we've covered the fact there's a lot of books in here; and I may be exaggerating (only slightly) about the chaotic nature of Voltaire. Books are separated into sections but are stacked high so you can't get to the ones you want! But that's part of the fun - finding a book you need from here becomes a quest and an adventure rather than a bland purchase. It's bursting with character, the guy who works in here keeps track (somehow) of every book he has (usually by ticking it off in a massive binder he has) and there's an added cat for your enjoyment. Said cat is really cute, although can get grumpy if pestered so give him peace sometimes! He is usually to be found lounging on top of a comfy paperback, living the high life. Voltaire has tons of personality and is two minutes away from the main campus of Glasgow uni, not to mention Kelvinbridge subway if you're travelling from further afield. With books at 2 pounds and rarities, what's stopping you? Go fetch! ( And good luck on your mission!) Be like Mario, smash through the books like bricks to get what you want - even if it is a fiction frenzy I promise you'll be 1 UP at the end of the experience.

It's hard not to reserve a soft spot for this place really. While generally speaking I'm not a fan of orderless set-ups, the kind of shops whereby you feel you're due a medal should your incessant rummaging finally uncover something worth buying, there's no doubting this second hand book mecca is a mess done with care. Not only are the owners knowledgeable, they also have a scarily accurate memory for finding titles you may require and are willing to hike over piles of tattered books to help you get them. Indeed the closest this place comes to order is the inclusion of a separate room which has books stacked up from floor to ceiling. "Everything in this room a pound," reads the sign. In many ways, this place should be a parody of itself, particularly as it includes an obligatory cat which wanders in and out at its pleasure, but it's just so welcoming and likeable. Although be warned - it definitely helps if you're a mean Jenga player when selecting books from one of the precarious balanced piles.

Proprietors Martin and his sister (my apologies for not remembering her name) were just great. Once I explained what I was looking for they were extremely helpful. It's been here for years and has been the first thing that's met my eye at the bottom of Belmont Street since I was a tot. Thus, I would be distraught if anything ever happened to this store, which has looked the same all my life. I used to go here with my mum who loves reading, but started properly utilising it when I studied English Lit at university. I'll get the negatives out the way first since I don't want to bring the tone down, but it is fairly pricey and the staff study you as you walk in. Unlike Thistle books, where you can engage in a long, lively conversation with the shop owner about the book of your choice (seriously, he knows all when it comes to books) or the erratic, nutty professor approach at Voltaire and Rousseau (which has become treasured by the population of Glasgow for these outstanding qualities), there's a cold breeze that blows through Caledonia. And that cold breeze seems wafted from the general direction of the shop owners. I've felt quite uneasy in here at times, like the shop owners don't think I belonged there. It was like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, but with books and baggy jeans instead of hookers and girls who belonged in magazines. My 18 year old self left with tail between legs, head drooped, but now that attitude just makes me indignant. The guys in here aren't unbearable, but they come across as a bit cold to say the least. It's also quite expensive for books. But there is light at the end of this review, and I'll end it with the glass being three quarters full. The books are in very good condition, they are well ordered, there are loads of different categories, loads of interesting books about art that I want to dive into at every opportunity, and it's a Godsend to lit students. I also enjoy their music category - they always seem to acquire some interesting rock biographies and anthologies. So the attitude of the staff is a bit stuffy, but their book shop is great. So, who cares?

Great selection, the books are pleasantly priced and in good nick. I bought A Clockwork Orange today (bit of light reading, ha) and not only was it only four quid but it looks like new! The owners are always very knowledgable of their craft and banter is free. Very useful for uni students but also accessible if you just fancy a new read. On those occasions, pay a visit to this little gem, which is situated in the lane adjacent to V+R. Like its neighbouring competitor, Thistle is a second hand book mecca, stocking virtually every genre you could imagine at extremely reasonable prices. Unlike V+R, it is set out neatly and something resembling orderly, meaning you actually have a chance of finding a specific title. Don't get me wrong, Thistle is no Waterstones. It retains the tattered, rough around the edges appeal of all second hand book shops in this neck of the woods and, most importantly, offers ample opportunity to uncover hidden gems at a fantastic price. The staff are also very welcoming and content to let you spend the day browsing and reading. Hell, they'd probably even make you up a bed for the night if you wanted to stay.

This is a fact that Waterstones quite rightly takes a little pride in. It's split across five levels and includes a Costa Coffee in the basement. Certain indie coffee shop fans may turn their nose up at Costa, and while I sympathise, any coffee shop that's inside a bookshop automatically becomes a good coffee shop. I'm pretty sure that's a universal rule. I feel like in a good bookshop I browse differently to how I would online. If I'm looking for a book online, chances are I already know which book it is and I'm just trying to get the lowest price/nicest edition/fastest delivery time. In a real book shop you have that joy of exploring and of looking at books that you never knew you wanted (or even books that you never knew existed). It's easy to start on the top floor and lose 20 minutes, lose another 30 on the next floor down (that's non-fiction and reference covered), lose at least another hour on the next floor which contains most of the fiction, 20 minutes one floor below that , which is the level you enter on, the stock rotates a lot here and includes toys, gifts and (inhale sharply) stationary. See? You've already lost over two hours and you haven't even looked at the children's section or the young adult section. You've not even seen the books on travel! Or film! Or art! They're to be found across the next two floors alongside that coffee shop. It's a dangerous thing to enter a bookshop and the larger the shop the more dangerous it gets. Tell a friend to come looking for you if they don't hear from you after a day or two.

It's small and apparently only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday but it's worth checking it out if you're looking for some studying material (especially if you're into your politics, which I'll get to later). Each bookshelf is well ordered and split into sections so it's easy to find what you're looking for if you're in a hurry. It's very well priced and I can imagine it being interesting for book collectors as many of the novels and theory books looked like they were at least 50 years old (great for nostalgia). The books looked in good enough second hand condition, and sometimes it's nice to buy a yellowing, well fingered read, anyway. Shows the book's had more than just a shelf life. The shop also has a collection of political activist T shirts on offer, of a socialist nature. I know statments made on similar T-shirts have been consistently popular amongst fashion conscious students but these ones are especially designed to convey politial messages. I picked up 3 books; one of which was Sense and Sensibility with a gorgeous, well adorned hardback 70s cover. It was what attracted me to it and it didn't escape the attention of the shop owner, who without me having to say began educating me on the style of cover art from that era. The two guys who were in were full of friendly banter and I got 3 books for 3 pounds so I was a happy customer. A lot of the books were political commentaries, and I got the impression the shop was aimed towards people interested in socialist theory (hence the 'Red' in the shop title), but it's not all it's got to offer and so is worth a gander. The emphasis this shop seems to be on ideas and intelligent reading. Be your purpose here be political, on a quest for learning materials or just for kicks, you won't be disappointed (and on a superficial level, it's worth going in just to get a sniff of that delicious old book smell).
