Glasgow was really buzzing (and sizzling in 26C heat!) on the day of the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, and so I decided to seek temporary refuge in the Hyndland Bookshop.
The moment I stepped through the door, I was met with a friendly nod from the owner, and left in peace to browse the shelves. The shop is small, but the books are cleverly arranged so that you can spend some time drifting from shelf to table. There is a pretty extensive collection of poetry, fiction, and travel writing, with special emphasis on children's books and local interest titles.
It's clear that the owner loves classic cinema, and I think this is what gives the shop its unique charm. There is an impressive dvd collection featuring well-known Hollywood films from the 40s and 50s, featuring the likes of Katherine Hepburn and Carey Grant. The prices are reasonable too.
There was one big disappointment though...that I didn't get to meet the resident friendly black Labrador (rumoured to fetch umbrellas for customers on rainy days). A twister ice-lolly would have been just the ticket! read more
