Since this was my Spanish fiancé's first visit to Munich and he is not exactly use to the cold winter, after touring around in -1 degree weather all afternoon, rather than shocking his system further with German cuisine, we opted for Spanish Tapas. I had been recently informed of VolkArt's existence, and since I am in love with Tapas, I had been dying to try this place out. Knowing that the possibility of finding a restaurant that would satisfy my cravings for the Spanish delicacies I have come to love and long for during my long stints away from that precious land, I was really hoping VolkArt would meet my high expectations (not fair to them, I know, but they were there nonetheless).
As my fiancé will eat anything, my flatmate (who was also with us) has never had tapas or anything really Spanish before, it was left to me to order. I chose a selection for us all to share and try, as that is always the most fun. We started with the Flautas, Tortilla Espanola, Albondigas, and Patatas Bravas. The Flautas and the Patatas Bravas were amazing. I could have eaten a vat of the tomato salsa that came with the Flautas all on its own. The Flautas had perfectly flavoured chicken filling, crispy fried Mexican tortilla wrap and some greens on top. Combined with the tomato salsa (I am not a fan of guacamole or sour cream), these have to be the best thing on the menu. We ended up ordering a second round. Along with a Quesadilla, which was also extremely good. The Patatas Bravas were also really good. They were cooked/fried perfectly... crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Not far behind was the Tortilla Espanol. I am rather bias as my fiancé makes an incredible tortilla. But, VolkArt does a very good job and I would recommend this highly. My only disappointment in the evening was the Albondigas. This is one of my favourite things to get in Spain and I was a little let down. There seem to be a lack of flavour and/or seasoning in our batch. They were ok... just not up to the level of the other things we had ordered.
I was pleased that they served Tegernsee Helles... one of my favourite Munich area beers, second only to Augustiner and on the same level as Paulaner (in my opinion). VolkArt offers a 250ml or a 500ml glass. My fiancé's instinct was to get the smaller one, finding the idea of half a litre in one sitting daunting. But, even though we were in a Spanish restaurant, this is still Munich after all. Smaller than half a litre just doesn't fly. I also had a Helles and my flatmate ordered a Rose, which she really enjoyed.
This was a Friday night around 6:30. When we walked in the place was empty except for one couple with a baby. We were a little worried at first, even considering the early hour. As we looked around, we noticed that all the tables had a "Reserved" sign on them. Including the bar. We spoke to the extremely friendly staff, who, after making us promise we would be out by 8:30, found us a spot. I would highly recommend reserving a place, even for 2 people. By 7:00 it was filling up and by the time we left it was full.
VolkArt exceeded my expectations and I will definitely be back! read more
