On a weekend trip to Leipzig, my main goal while exploring the city was to check out its vegan…read moreofferings. Naturally I turned to Yelp while compiling my list, but I almost overlooked Green Soul, which opened in May 2015 and hadn't yet been added. Luckily Happy Cow had it listed, and so after checking out the menu, we decided to go there for dinner.
The restaurant has a limited menu: there are five mains, along with a changing daily special, plus four appetizers and three desserts along with the option of ice cream.
We ended up ordering the homemade lemonade: one with lemon ginger and one with lavender lemon. The former was a bit spicy and the second was very refreshing. They were also served with some bread and olives. For our meals, we got the seitan gulasch (with spätzle and salad) and the Green Soul burger with sweet potato fries. Both of them were really good. The former, which the fellow had, could have been improved (he said) with some onions and perhaps soy yogurt served with the entree. I enjoyed the fries and the mayo dip (and I normally am not into mayo with fries), and the "bun" was really tasty, though it fell apart a bit. If I were to change the burger I would make it fall apart less easily, and maybe throw in an avocado. But that's my personal preference. Finally, we ended our meal with dessert: chocolate ice cream with chocolate pieces for me, and vanilla tonka bean with waldmeister cream on top. In total, our bill came to less than €35.
As for the building itself, it's done in a shabby chic style, with a lot of personal touches. The outside seating consists of metal tables and chairs set up on the sidewalk like a French cafe. Inside it's spacious, with a seating area to the right, a bar area straight ahead, and a sitting room area to the left, where people can relax on chairs or loveseats and talk or enjoy a drink. Upstairs is more seating, and there's also a children's room, with toys, and space to change diapers or feed your child.
And of course there's the service; it was (mostly) prompt and very friendly all evening long. While there are still a few things to iron out (it is only three months old), Green Soul is already a lovely spot with a lot of realized potential, and worth checking out if you're looking for food prepared with a bit extra attention to detail.
