    Green Soul - hausgemachte Limonade

On a weekend trip to Leipzig, my main goal while exploring the city was to check out its vegan…read moreofferings. Naturally I turned to Yelp while compiling my list, but I almost overlooked Green Soul, which opened in May 2015 and hadn't yet been added. Luckily Happy Cow had it listed, and so after checking out the menu, we decided to go there for dinner. The restaurant has a limited menu: there are five mains, along with a changing daily special, plus four appetizers and three desserts along with the option of ice cream. We ended up ordering the homemade lemonade: one with lemon ginger and one with lavender lemon. The former was a bit spicy and the second was very refreshing. They were also served with some bread and olives. For our meals, we got the seitan gulasch (with spätzle and salad) and the Green Soul burger with sweet potato fries. Both of them were really good. The former, which the fellow had, could have been improved (he said) with some onions and perhaps soy yogurt served with the entree. I enjoyed the fries and the mayo dip (and I normally am not into mayo with fries), and the "bun" was really tasty, though it fell apart a bit. If I were to change the burger I would make it fall apart less easily, and maybe throw in an avocado. But that's my personal preference. Finally, we ended our meal with dessert: chocolate ice cream with chocolate pieces for me, and vanilla tonka bean with waldmeister cream on top. In total, our bill came to less than €35. As for the building itself, it's done in a shabby chic style, with a lot of personal touches. The outside seating consists of metal tables and chairs set up on the sidewalk like a French cafe. Inside it's spacious, with a seating area to the right, a bar area straight ahead, and a sitting room area to the left, where people can relax on chairs or loveseats and talk or enjoy a drink. Upstairs is more seating, and there's also a children's room, with toys, and space to change diapers or feed your child. And of course there's the service; it was (mostly) prompt and very friendly all evening long. While there are still a few things to iron out (it is only three months old), Green Soul is already a lovely spot with a lot of realized potential, and worth checking out if you're looking for food prepared with a bit extra attention to detail.

I'm going to start my review by saying one thing: Tiger Beer!…read more I know what you're thinking. "But Tiger Beer is Singaporean!" I find that if there's a way to make an ethnic restaurant feel more authentic, it is by importing the beer from that local region. With that being said, An Nam is probably one of the most authentic Vietnamese restaurants I've been to while in Germany. They have a variety of dishes on their menu. The coi guon (spring/summer rolls for those who aren't familiar with the name) here are probably the best I've had in Europe; caveat - I would have preferred the hoisin peanut sauce mix rather than nuoc mam. For my main meal, I ordered a Pho Tai. It came out as expected for a Vietnamese restaurant in this part of Europe. I'm not going to go into detail here on why the pho is different than what would find in Cali or New York, but if you are interested, you can see my other review on Vietnamese restaurants, mainly in Prague to explain the regional differences in the Pho served in Eastern Europe. To close out the meal, we ordered ca phe sua (or Vietnamese coffee). They were served with the dripper attachment on top of the glass - this sealed the deal for me. Even though it was pouring as we ate, it was rather glorious to be able to relax, eat and enjoy our meals, sipping on cold Tiger Beer and having an after diner smoke outside under an overhead, incandescent bamboo lamp as the rain casted off the umbrella/awning. Probably the only thing that would make this restaurant better is if they offered Banh Mi. :D

Zudem würde es schlecht also faulig schmecken.

I had pressed tofu slices fried with mushrooms in a black vinegar and black bean sauce, eggplant and potatoes in a red oil-chili-tomato sauce, bok choi, and crispy potatoes, all for the price of 6 euros! This place offers meat dishes, but also numerous options for vegetarians/vegans. All but two of the lunch options were vegan, including things like noodles and steamed buns. I would never have guessed Leipzig is such a haven for vegans. I'm seeing tons of vegan options here, and this place is no exception--but what makes KungFood exceptional is the high quality, reasonable price, and the friendliness of the owners.

My husband & I drink only water with (non-breakfast) meals, and we hate the fact that you have to pay for water (at restaurants) in Germany (also in certain other European countries); it's a matter of principle with us. We found a few places in Berlin (prior to visiting Leipzig) where they agreed not to charge us for water, but we were in a touristic section of Leipzig and four or five restaurants refused to comply with that when we asked (all of those restaurants had great menus and the interiors looked lovely - but my feeling is that it's their loss if we didn't patronize them). We were just about to give up, when we passed by this little place. I asked the guy behind the counter, and he readily agreed to give us water with no charge. We ordered two individual pizzas (which were *very* reasonably-priced), thinking we'd share them - the pizza salmon with spinach & mushrooms and the vegetarian pizza - but the size of the pizzas turned out to be *much* bigger than we'd imagined and we had to take nearly half of the remainder with us (and then we were too full to eat the leftovers). Anyway; the pizzas were *delicious*! Also: the nice guy behind the counter was *incredibly* sweet-natured, so we tipped him the amount that we would have paid for water. Note: This place doesn't accept credit cards.
