History

Established in 1950.

Currently owned by Henry and Hazel Vokes, the story of Adare gift and Hardware started back in the late 1920s. Henrys father was born on a farm just outside Adare and he began his working life as a junior shop assistant at the Miss Hanrahans general store just off main street Adare. Only a few years later, the Miss Hanrahans retired and with some help from his father he was able to purchase the business. He traded at Black Abbey Adare with grocery, hardware, flour and meal. A happy family photo outside Vokes late 1950. The business thrived and in 1960 the opportunity to buy the much larger premises of The Co.Op. Store on Main Street arose. Henry had always "served his time" in the business and he joined Harry officially in 1972. In 1985 Hazel joined in marriage and in business. The shop began a process of redevelopment in the 1990's stocking quality gifts, housewares and hardware.
