https://youtu.be/LIcAXVnrORg Mama Africa! I love the sound of music that comes out of you!!! I grew up in southern Africa where the sound & tone are totally different to what was coming out of the Congo (Pépé Kallé) & West Africa. It would honestly take hours to go through a descriptive explanation of the huge explosion of music that has come out of Africa crossing many genres. Sticking with West Africa - Afrobeat ( popularized by Fela Kuti x Nigeria) & today popularily known as Afropop - has now taken over the airwaves. Type - Afropop - into Spotify for a sample. Jidenna (Nigerian American) who exploded on the music scene in 2015 with the hit - Classic Man - has gone back to his roots for inspiration with his new album - 85 to Africa. African music is to me always about the beat, the rhythm & the dance! There's over 2000 languages spoken in Africa with 500 alone belonging to Nigeria! So if you have time to decipher the lyrics - pick your language & you go for it! Hence my point on - beat, rhythm & sound hitting me first & foremost - the lyrics are a bonus whether I understand them or not. The Vogue Theatre opened in 1941 & is designated as a Heritage Building - meaning it ain't going nowhere! I had not been here since 2013 when I saw the late great - Oliver Mtukudzi from Zimbabwe (9 spoken languages here). The Vogue holds over 1200 people, has a great lighting system & the sound is fantastic. Jidenna killed it tonight! His new album is fire! https://youtu.be/qrT3JHOV4dE The band played a fine tight awesome sounding show! I was so impressed that the Vogue had pulled out seats near the front of the stage - creating a larger dance floor area. I didn't recall this much floor space making up the dance floor - the last time I came. The vibe of the crowd was awesome & we danced away - we sure did! Of note - perhaps I'm on oldie now but last time I went out & a venue threw on the - fog machine - gosh that fog had me gagging & running for cover! It was like being gassed out by the Popo! However, I'm glad to say - not this time at the Vogue!!! This must be some new modern type of fog effect - cause I felt fine - my throat was good & eyes didn't start watering up! Thank you Jidenna for coming to Vancouver! Come through again soon! ****** Update - Tuesday (2 days after show). Ok so I bumped into a friend yesterday! He told me his daughter had contacted him telling him I was on Instagram hanging out with Jidenna!!! I was like - no way seriously!?? On Sunday - preshow - my brother & I were outside the Vogue contemplating a bite to eat somewhere before the show. Well guess who walked up on us!!! I was star-struck!!!!! Chatted with him & then he headed in for rehearsals! Later I was kicking myself for having forgotten to have a picture taken with him! Well I tell you this IG clip is even better!!! The original is better but on Yelp you'll get the dreaded 'trimmed' up version! Enjoy!

I came to a show last night and was pleasantly surprised. Many of the reviews left me wondering what we'd encounter when we got to the theater. The Vogue was nothing like I expected. Every employee was helpful and courteous. The line to get in was quick/easy. The chairs, oh I'd heard so many complaints about the chairs, were fine. Were they amazing? No. But they were comfortable and no smaller or closer together than comparable venues. And the padding was pretty thick. I'd avoided coming to a show here before because of many of the reviews. But I'd do it again in a heartbeat. 4 stars for expensive non alcohol drinks, slightly tinny sound and wet GA floor.

No zoom - I could reach out and touch Devin!

This was the whole reason we flew up to Vancouver: to see the DTP's last show of their 2016 North American tour. It was a combo DTP fangirl/birthday weekend, and I'm so glad we did it. We paid for the VIP experience, of course (fangirl!), so we knew we'd get into the theater before a majority of the people that were already huddled under the marquee, escaping the rain. The venue itself was decent - we had GA tickets, so we were right on the rail, as close to the stage as we could get. The sound that night was really good, considering our location (not usually the best sound when you're at the front of the house). They did have seats, which were first-come, first-served, but we didn't even bother. It's just that that's not how we do shows. But the seats were full by the time the DTP hit the stage. The floors in the venue were tacky (expected) and full of confetti from the night before. I guess it's too difficult to sweep confetti off of an already-sticky floor, but they didn't even give it a go. Oh well, I'm sure every concert-goer that night helped them by tracking the confetti into the streets as they left. The upstairs area - where they sold merch and such - was too small for that purpose. The merchandise table was squished into a back corner, and it made it difficult to approach, when people would come into the front door and just kind of stop. Other than that, though, we had no problem with the theater. Again, it was an experience that we wanted, and we got the "seats" we had planned on (okay, it was SRO, but you get my meaning). Though it is a larger venue, it had a more intimate feel to it. I liked the interior decor - it was a little dated, but you got the feeling they didn't much care. At least it looked like they spent some time and money on upkeep, if not on decorating. But hey, I'd rather they spend money on audio quality than painting the walls.

Went and saw the Julia Michaels Inner Monologue World Tour ya the Vogue Theatre! Great atmosphere, staff were very kind and made sure everyone was safe and happy. Venue itself was cozy and made the performance almost seem like you were right beside her, even though she was far away from your seat!

    Crowd shenanigans.

I don't find the seats uncomfortable but that may be due to the fact that IF I sit at a concert, I still dance in my seat the entire time. I enjoy the 70's shabby opulence of the place. No complaints on the sound. It isn't up to the standards of some other venues but is still highly satisfying. The smaller, casual setting means the opening bands sometimes do their own set-up...the vibe is welcoming and chill. Staff is accomodating and efficient. The drinks fall on the weak side. Come early and line up if you want choice spots. My favorites: right in front of the stage or the front row of the balcony. Or come later and you'll still likely score a good view. This past week we shared a box of pizza from a joint several stores down. We scarfed the steaming slices as we stood in the lightly drizzling rain. (Why does food always taste better outside?!?) Then we were entertained by the music fantastical that is, "Hey Rosetta".

This was my first ever experience of a concert in a theatre. I bought the tickets for Dua Lipa on pre-sale back in November and only paid about $80 total for the two tickets which was a great price and to be expected as she's an up and coming artist. I'm not sure if this if for every show, but I confirmed with a friend that for most shows it is open seating, so no matter the price of the ticket, you get what you get. Which makes sense to me as some fans can't afford the front row but deserve to see their favourite artist up close and have that connection. The line up was out the door 3 hours before the event started but the line moved very quickly. To my surprise, the floor was pretty empty by the time we got inside and found our spot. We didn't sit because we knew if we did, we would be pushed to the back once the show started. Drinks were about $7 for a single and $15 for a double depending on what type of drink you're going for. It wasn't any more expensive than any other venue. It was quite clean and the space was utilized as best as it could be. I just love the theatre.

ONE OK ROCK (March 22, 2019)

I don't have any complaints. Came here for the band ONE OK ROCK and didn't have any problems with lining up and admissions. Everything was smooth sailing and this was my first experience being at the Vogue Theatre. What sucked was having these people behind me in line and they were cringy and loud... :,( nothing that could be done about that though. Half an hour of listening to them talk was dreadful though. This is a seated venue and the first few rows of seats are removed for certain performances to allow for a standing area, if you gotta move your body to the groove and ride on that vibe train. There's also an upper level with more seats so you get a different angle up there too. What's bad is that some people try to save a whole row of seats when they don't sit there, shame on them! I saw a girl shoo away some older ladies (and anyone else that asked) even though it wasn't occupied for the whole event. Good stuff though, I'll probably go again if someone cool plays some beats.

Old. Grungy. Sticky Floors. It's really a wonder that groups would choose to perform here at all. Came here for a concert, and while the performance was excellent, the venue was most definitely not. You can tell that the place is over seventy years old, I'm sure that some of the dust collecting on everything is original. The seats weren't all that comfortable, but the good thing was that they weren't assigned, and the tickets were good for general admission. Plan to not go to the washroom, especially if you're a guy. There's only one, located on the second floor, compared to the two women's rooms-- nice reverse sexism there, Vogue. To end on a positive note, though, the ushers were pretty courteous and welcoming, and the theatre staff provided umbrellas to patrons outside waiting for entry prior to the concert.

We got there quite early into service so not a lot of people in the place. The ceiling is low, it's kind of dark, but somehow it works. It feels maybe more intimate, which was right up our alley. We wanted some nibbles, not a full blown meal lest we fall asleep during the performance. Happy hour was still on so we ordered the dill pickle chips and the burger sliders combo. Both were excellent! The chips were spot on definitely dill pickley, nicely cooked and crispy. The sliders were really great as well, not too small like many we've had lately and you could really taste the beef. Our martinis were also great although a little more juice in the "dirty" side of the equation and perhaps an olive without a pit. We also ordered the BLT with mixed greens, which we probably didn't need but Les Mis is almost three hours long. The service was also great, waters topped up regularly and the servers interactive and interesting. We would absolutely come back to Ventura again. Oh and Les Misérables was outstanding!

The place is located down in gastown just on the cusp of the crust, meaning its just inbetween where the crackies meet the Vancouver nitelife, or if you're better with landmarks, kitty corner from the Number 5 Orange. Inside there are lots of old remains of ironworks bringing you industrial steampunk realness, and separate rooms to mingle and drink. Well, at this event there was a beer and wine selection so drink we did! A small glass of red went for $5 which is pretty decent, and they had a table of Geek Sweet Cupcakes for sale as well. YUM! The fashion show was fierce and they had some bands in between which were so-so. What I liked about this space was that there was space for a live band to play with a small stage, and there was also space for a runway (I'm not sure if that was brought in from somewhere else or something the venue rents) but it was pretty cool to have both, plus a separate room with a small bar set up, and a backstage area. What I'm sayin' is that this room is pretty diverse, and there's a lot you can do with it and I like that.

The Cobalt is the lowest common denominator of bars in Vancouver, but it manages to take a certain pride in the dilapidated scenario. Typically full of punkish-goth kids, it serves extremely cheap beer and highballs, has ample seating and room for mosh pits, and comes off as unpretentious, in a "too good for good" sort of way. Many loud bands are given their first opportunity here, and many of the better ones return after achieving success for nostalgia's sake. Things can get out of hand, as conventional wisdom tends to get left behind in coat check, and obnoxious teenage drunks start doing whatever they want. I've even seen a band shoot whiskey filled super soakers out into the audience. This is actually the only place I ever did cocaine, taking it for the only time on one of the musty old cars parked out back.
